All set for the Site Visit

A frontal view of our autonomous vehicle, prior to site visit testing.

Spectators

A crowd of enthusiastic onlookers watches the team get ready for the site visit.

E-Stop Test

DARPA examiners measure the distance taken by the vehicle to stop after the E-stop test.

Discussions

Team leader Rick Bletsis describes the hardware on board the Ody-Era vehicle to the DARPA examiners while other team members looks on.

Awaiting Launch

The first test is about to start and the launch team is waiting for the green signal from the DARPA examiners.

Ready for Launch

Chase team members board their vehicle while other team members attend to their launch tasks.

Loading the MDF

The timer has started and team members rush to 'inform' the vehicle about the mission it is to accomplish.

Away They Go!

The driverless vehicle leaves on its solo mission followed by chase vehicles.

Accelerating after Turning

The Ody-Era vehicle picks up speed after it traverses a steep right turn.

Approaching an Obstacle

Having sensed the obstacle vehicle well in advance, the Ody-Era vehicle slows down gradually and comes to a complete stop, prior to launching an avoidance maneuver.

At the Intersection

A complicated intersection scenario is successfully analyzed and the Ody-Era vehicle yields at the intersection to two vehicles.

More Intersection Testing

Several intersection scenarios were tested. The Ody-Era vehicle successfully utilized $50 web cams for analyzing traffic at intersections!

Avoidance Maneuver in Progress

Shown here is an avoidance maneuver that was triggered by a stalled vehicle in the path of travel.

The Mini Ody-Era Bot (MOE)

MOE is invaluable in verifying software and sensors, before testing on the full-scale Ody-Era vehicle.

Programming MOE

Mahesh is teaching MOE a few new tricks. The same software and laptop are used to control the full-size vehicle.

MOE on the go!

MOE is displaying the various skills it has learned, closely followed by Ron, Rick and Mac.

A Robot encounters a Human

Test driver Anisha approaches a robot headed her way, while backup driver Anita looks on.

1:48 Scale Simulator

Before even testing on MOE, the software has to work at the 1:48 scale. Note the video camera at the base. It is the same camera used on MOE and the full size vehicle.

Four-way Intersection Simulator

By utilizing simple simulators such as the one shown here, the algorithms for four-way intersections could be perfected, considerably minimizing full-size vehicle test time.
