"Meniya"
By Sue

The shimmering, blue vortex of the Stargate dissolved out of existence behind them. They were alone.
"Ok kids, let’s see what we got here" said Jack O'Neil, already striding out to investigate the planet. An uninhabited desert dotted with hundreds of blackened, skeletons of what once may have been trees standing starkly against the barren landscape and large piles of rocks surrounding the Stargate met his eyes.

"Well I know where I’m coming for my next vacation" he remarked dryly.

"Wow" murmured Samantha Carter "It didn’t look this ... bare on the computer screen."
Daniel nodded his agreement as he pulled out his camcorder. Jack returned to the group scratching his forehead.

"Well people, I don’t think there’s anything here and if there ever was it’s not here now. I don’t think we’re going to see anything more."

"But Jack" Daniel butted in quickly "There could be something here that could give some clue to what happened the this planet. What caused this We haven’t even been here 20 minutes and ...."

"Daniel, look around. What do you see?" Daniel glanced about quickly.

"Well nothing much but.." Jack smacked Daniel’s shoulders and grinned.

"Exactly! Come on Tealc, Sam we’ll be leaving in five."

"But Jack there could be.." Daniel trailed off. Hopeless. "Well I’m just going to see if there’s anything over that hill okay?"

"All right but be careful" Jack replied.

"Whatever" Daniel murmured, disappointed and headed off across the sand.

Daniel climbed up the small hill and scanned the area. More of the same. He sighed and his eyes swept down towards the base of the hill. Suddenly he noticed a strange marking on a rock at the bottom of the hill. It almost looked like some kind of writing. His curiosity aroused, he slid down the sand embankment and picked his way over several smooth stones. As he got closer he could see that it was definitely a symbol, scrawled on the stone. His excitement grew. This means that there is someone or something alive here, his mind raced, perhaps human life may have somehow survived in this barren wasteland! He took another step closer when the ground suddenly disappeared out from beneath his feet.

"Aahhh" he cried out as he felt himself falling. It felt like forever before he hit the ground heavily in a cascade of dirt, sand and pebbles. Oops he thought before he lost consciousness.

Sam slipped the last soil sample into her bag and stood up.

"Jack, we’re ready to go now"she yelled. Jack shushed her, gesturing with his arms.

"Shhh, Did you hear that?" Jack asked her.

"No, what?" she looked at him raising her eyebrows in surprise. Jack cocked his head to the side listening intently.

"I don’t know. Maybe it wasn’t anything" Jack said slowly. He glanced around quickly and looked at the rest of the team with worry evident in his eyes.

"Where’s Daniel?"

Daniel lay sprawled motionless on the ground. Blood trickled slowly from a cut above his eye. Weak light from the hole twenty feet above, illuminated his still form, everything else was in darkness. Unexpectedly a pair of eyes blinked out of the darkness. Then another pair. Within seconds blazing pairs of eyes surrounded the unconscious anthropologist and a soft scuffling and squeaking could be heard. Tiny hands tugged at his green, regulation shirt, gently touching his shoes and exclaiming over his glasses, which by some miracle were unbroken and still on his face. The tiny hands began tugging more insistently and slowly, almost imperceptibly, began to drag Daniel away.

"Daniel! Daniel! Where are you?!" Jack yelled.

"Daniel!" Sam turned to Tealc. "Where did he say he was going?".

"I think he went over that hill over there. O’Neil is looking" Tealc replied stonyfaced.

"Sam! Tealc" came a loud bellow from the other side of the rise. "He’s here. Hurry." The pair raced up the hill and slithered to the bottom, spotting Jack crouched at the edge of a deep hole. They skidded to a stop at the edge of the crater. They could make out Daniel’s body lying motionless at the bottom.

"Dammit!" muttered Jack "Quick get the rope. I’ll have to climb down". Tealc jumped up and ran back to the ‘gate. Sam glanced at Jack

"Sam?" Jack said expectantly.

"He’s unconscious" she said, "he might be hurt badly. I can’t see very well." She looked Jack in the eyes.

"I know what you’re thinking Jack" she said softly. "It’s not your fault." Jack closed his eyes.

"It is my fault Sam. I should have been watching him, he was my responsibility."

"As much as you would like to you can’t be everywhere at once Jack. No-one can." She touched his arm gently.

"But I should have been there for him." They stared at each other for a long moment, until Tealc returned with the rope.

"Daniel, hang on I’m coming down ok?" Jack yelled, although he knew that his young friend couldn’t hear him. He glanced down into the darkness and did a double take.

Daniel was gone.
