The Ancient City of OLYMPOS
Olympos beach ends on northen edge with the archeological site of
the
ancient Lycian port town Olympos, leading through a valley towards the
mountains.
You can enjoy exploring the ancient life style; the harbour, baths, graves,
amphitheatre and the town centre with its narrow lanes that are still
recognisable.
CHIMEARA: the Eternal Fire
According to mythology; the monster Chimeara destroyed Lycia with
its firey breath. After that Bellerophon -riding his winged horse Pegasus-
shot and killed the monster Chimeara with a hail of arrows. Then he built an
altar for his goddes Athena.
Today a natural phenomenon takes place on the spot where gases escaping
from the earth create an iternal flame known as the burning stone
or as in Turkish "Yanartas".
LYCIA
Lycia is a Prehellenistic region.
Earliest settlements date from around 1400 BC.
and are still distinctive. Lycia means "the land of the sun"
and defined an area of co-operating city states:
"the famous lycian League from Fethiye in the west to Antalya in the east".
Through the Greek, Roman and Byzantine eras Lycia retained its importance.Today the area is a huge archeological park and you can visit
more than 50 major sites within relatively easy reach of one another.
Phaselis and Gagae are in the immediate vicinity.
