Egeria was born around 1954, which means she was only about 20 years old when the study started. Nonetheless, she was already matriarch at this young age when we first saw her. We must assume that her mother and other immediate family died before the study, leaving her in charge at a young age.
At around the age of 16, she gave birth to her first known calf, Loquillilla. Only 4 years later, her second daughter, Goletas, was born.
Around this time, researchers ID'd her family. For the next few years, the 3 females popped up a fair amount of times in orca encounters. Then in 1979, Egeria gave birth for the first time during the study, to son Tribune. About 4 years later, she had her second son, Skuna. Around the same time, she sustained an injury to her fin that would result in her distinctive notch.
The family was quickly growing, and when Skuna was only two years old, Loquillilla gave birth to the first third generation known, son Quatsino. Egeria surely helped her grandson to the surface for his first breath, and was probably there the whole time to play midwife for her eldest daughter.
For the next few years, Egeria travelled surrounded by her growing family. As she babied her youngest son, Tribune and Skuna began to mature, and Loquillilla became an experience mother. Egeria is clearly a good teacher, as she has raised 5 children to adulthood, without losing a single one under 20, to our knowledge.
In 1995, at the unusually late age of 21, Egeria's second daughter became a mom as well. Goletas gave birth to calf Whirl assisted by her brothers, nephew, sister and mom. Then, only 2 years later, yet another addition joined the family, when Loquillilla gave birth to grandchild number 3, Zayas.
Sadly, a year later, this seemingly charmed family would finally suffer a death. More than 20 years after the study started, the I11 family lost a whale. Baby Whirl, only 3 years old, disappeared that year, and Goletas was once again without a calf.
For the next few years, the family remained stable. Egeria helped her youngest, Kokish, after he suffered a major injury to his fin. Loquillilla dealt with two rambunctious youngsters, while both Tribune and Skuna matured into full grown males.
Sadly, Tribune wouldn't enjoy his maturity very long. In 2003, at age 24, he was declared dead; the second death to hit the matriline.
News would be better the year after that. Loquillilla gave birth to her 3rd calf, baby Levy. Clearly following in her mom's footsteps, Loquillilla and her children can often be seen following right behind Egeria. Around the same time, Kokish began to mature, his damaged fin wobbling as it rapidly grew.
The year after that, grandchild #5 appeared on the scene. 8 years after her first baby's death, Goletas finally had a new calf.
Now, Egeria is the proud matriarch of a strong, healthy family that has grown significantly from when we first met them. From a mother and her two children, it is now a three generation pod. Egeria is usually seen surrounded by her 2 surviving sons, with Loquillilla, Goletas, and their respective calves splashing around her. She is around 52 now, and still as healthy and strong as ever.
