Sissy was born around 1935, and researchers believe that her mother was probably Granny, matriarch of J-Pod. When Sissy was born, we know her family consisted of Granny and Ruffles, who was either her uncle, or older brother.
She grew up nestled between the sprouting fin of Ruffles and the leadership of Granny. As Sissy matured, she probably had calves that sadly did not survive. She was also probably involved in a 1968 capture that her brother/uncle was in.
Researchers first identified Sissy in a 1972 capture. The whales, of both J and L pod, were corralled into Carr Inlet, where most of them managed to avoid captivity. Photos would later identify Sissy as one of the whales, along with a new baby, her first known calf. Sadly, the little male, named Canuck, was taken away in that same capture. He would die two years later in California.
After being released, J-Pod settled back into normal orca life. In 1974, Sissy had her first and only daughter, Samish. She proved to be a good mother and Samish matured into a playful young female.
In 1987, at age 13, Samish had her first baby and Sissy became a grandmother! The male, Capricorn, sadly only lived four years. Another young whale had left the family too soon.
Only a few years later, Samish gave birth to her second son, Riptide. The playful calf was Sissy's second grandchild.
He was also the last one she would meet. In 1996, at around the age of 61, Sissy was seen for the last time with her family. She died that year.
Since then, her family has prospered. Samish has given birth to two daughters, Hy'Shqa and Suttles, and Riptide has matured into a sprouting bull.
