There are 2 Island Chains to the west of Tortall. Neither are pictured here. I'll try to get a map w/ them on it up here sometime soon.
The Copper Ils are located to the southwest of Tortall, in the Emerald Ocean. They are an enemy of Tortall, & a slaveholding country. Their patron deity is Kyprioth. Princess Josiane was from the Copper Ils. There's insanity in their ruling line. This ruling line is descended from a lesser Marenite noble, Rittevon of Lenman. He and a bunch of his friends gathered an army and conquered the native raka people of the ils in 181 HE. The raka were subjected to the rule of the invaders who came to be known as luarin. However, one branch of the raka royal family, the Haiming line, survived. We shall see what happens when Trickster's Queen comes out......
The Yamani Ils are located to the northwest of Tortall. They are a staunch ally of Tortall since their Princess Shinkokami married Prince Roald. Kel & her family lived there for 6 years while her parents were the Tortallan ambassadors. The ils are ruled by an ancient line of emperors. The warriors are very disciplined, and women often learn how to fight w/ weapons such as the glaive and the shukushen. We learn a great deal about the Yamani Ils in the POTS series. They remind me of samurai Japan. The land is very mountainous, and the ils are vulnerable to pirate raids. That's why they have such strong military discipline. While in the ils, Kel learned how to use her fave weapon-the glaive.
Carthak is the name for what used to be the Southern Lands-the whole continent to the south of Tortall. The empire of Carthak, originating in the northern part of the continent. conquered all of the once free lands to the south. These include Zallara, Ekallatum, Amar, Apal, Yamut, and Shusin. A great deal of Carthak is desert. The whole continent can be likened to the continent of Africa, but Carthak proper puts me in the mind of Roman controlled Egypt. Tammy said she started off w/ Carthage, but there wasn't enough info. so she went to Egypt. Right now Carthak is ruled by Emperor Kaddar, nephew of Ozorne the evil guy who wanted to conquer Tortall. Carthak is famed for its university, which Numair came from. There's a lot of info about Carthak in EM. Their patron goddess is the Graveyard Hag. |
