![]() "LANTANA": Don't You Ever Feel Like Crying? (reviewed by AX)
What the fuck does "Lantana" mean? I don't know, but something tells me we'll all find out after awhile. It might mean "Oscar" if there's any justice left in the world. "Lantana" is an Australian movie, but its stars are very recognizable ones from American cinema. And despite maintaining a very somber tone throughout, it is in fact a very well-written drama/murder mystery. It was slow to bulid, but once it gained momentum, I was totally locked into the story and the unfolding events. It's one of those elaborately-constructed character pieces, so if you dig that type'a shit, you definitely need to check out this movie. Now, for your amusement, I'll attempt to outline the plot. "Lantana" centers on a burnt-out cop (played by Anthony LaPaglia, who kicked much ass in John Landis's way under-appreciated 1992 vampire flick "Innocent Blood") who is having an affair. His wife is seeing a shrink (played by Barbara "I Injected Some Of My Ass Fat Into My Lips" Hershey), who's having marital troubles of her own, because she and HER husband (played by Oscar-winner Geoffrey Rush) are dealing with the grief of losing their young daughter, who was murdered just 18 months prior. GOT THAT? So, when the shrink suddenly disappears one night, LaPaglia is assigned to the case. Guess who was a witness? The bitch he's screwing on the side! Damn, that's harsh, G. Thus begins the web of intrigue and betrayal that makes "Lantana" so cool and interesting. To be honest, I don't normally go for movies like this. I require a certain amount of titty, swearing, and blood. But I cannot deny the cleverness of "Lantana"...the story, how effectively the filmmakers created suspense, and the kick-ass acting. The plot kept me guessing the whole time, it twists and turns right up till the last frame. Just when you thought you knew what was coming...BAM! NO YOU FUCKIN DON'T, DUMB ASS! My only advice is don't see this movie if you're sleepy. But if you enjoy using your brain, and you're looking for some intrigue done proper, don't miss this.
