What Happened To...?

  • WILEY, SAM
  • (AX): Only those who were part of our group in the first year (or went to Oakcliff Elementary with me) would remember Sam. He was my best friend during the grammar school days, and had quite a difficult childhood. Forced to live with his holy-roller aunt, Sam ached to rebel against everything she stood for. In me, he found inspiration and encouragement to do so. I got him interested in the supernatural, and also into music. Unfortunately, Sam fell ill near the end of our 7th grade year, and spent the remaining 2 weeks of it in the hospital. After that, we lost contact. I'd occasionally hear stories about what he was up to, though. By several accounts, he'd reportedly punched his aunt in the face (breaking her nose), run away from home, got into Satanism, and bounced back & forth between his real parents.
(OG):Sam was there at the beginning. A short kid with a blonde crew cut and a quick temper, Sam ended up being the victim of a troubled upbringing. His was a strict, religious background, and it ended up scarring more than it healed. His experiences opened my eyes to the hypocrisies of organized religion, but I'd take all of that early knowledge back to save his teenage years from the strife they existed in.

    STATUS:

(AX:) In summer 1996, a friend of mine somehow attained Sam's phone number. I called, we spoke, and I agreed to come out to see him. He was living with his mom near Stone Mountain. We spent the day together, and it was clear to me that he was no longer someone I knew. It was like time had stopped for him when he left our school, and all he'd done was grow older and fall deeper into the Satanism. I'm not a religious guy, but I think any obsession like that, God or Devil, is fucked. It was just too weird (and too sad) for me to handle at that point in my life. That ended up being the last I ever saw of him.
(OG): Who knows what evils lurk in the hearts of men? The Andrew knows...
