2001 Marching Show |
Announcing the 2001 Red Regiment Marching Band Show. The band is led on to the field by drum major, Carlos Rodriguez, field commander, Tara Cripps, and color guard co-captains, Michelle Mui and Laura Middleton. With this year's show, Rhythm of the Pride Lands, the band takes you to the plains of Africa featuring the music from the Broadway smash-hit The Lion King and the music of South African performer, Lebo M. This show is both a multicultural and interdiscplinary event with African drumming, Broadway music, intriguing props, as well as the beautiful art work of artist, Curt Warner. We set the mood with the opening call, translated meaning "A Lion is Coming", presented by soloist Carlos Rodriguez on trumpet as well as the expressive guard work of Laura Middleton and Michelle Mui. Then the driving sounds of the percussion take charge with "Rhythm of the Pride Lands". There is a chance for audience participation, be ready! This leads directly into the intense and rhythmic "Stampede" with an exciting dialogue between the winds and percussion along with some intense drill moves and amazing technical displays by the woodwinds. Our second production, Shadowlands, is a sorrowful and reflective number that features the clarinets, saxophones, and the solo work of Jessica Harris on horn. Watch for the visual surpise at the end! The third production is the fun and carefree, I Can't Wait to Be King featuring all of our woodwinds and a small brass ensemble of Bernard Hendrix, Henry Cooper, Emil Zedkaia, Jessica Harris, and James Darden. Again look for some interesting props, exciting drill moves, virtuosic playing and a hint of things to come. Our African drums continue as the musical thread that connects the whole show. The fourth production, Battle for Pride Rock, is an original work based on the African Chant Shango by Dr. Andrew F. Poor and features once again an expanded African percussion section, primal masks, and the talents of our brass and clarinet sections. The show concludes with "King of Pride Rock" and "Circle of Life." This production begins with a heartfelt chorale presented by the brass that leads us to a dance sequence, brightly colored flags, a little musical surprise, and ends with the ever familair, "Cirle of Life." We would also like to extend a special thank you to senior band parent, Curt Warner, the artist responsible for our beautiful props, as well as guard parent David Welch who built many of our guard props, and Darlene Tinsley-Levy who helped make some of our flags. Those who get to see our show, we hope you enjoy, Rhythm of the Pride Lands. |
