A Summary of Events and Topics of Interest to OHS grads and friends
May 19, 2003
After celebrating an extra long, and I might add, fantastic Mothers Day weekend, I'm ready to start on this weeks letter! I was fortunate enough to see all the grandkids but one, including the new one, who is now 4 months old. Received wonderful gifts, and dinner and my husband found a whole box of video tapes in storage that we had previously thought were stolen. We had 4 boxes (close to 400 tapes) of them before the burglary to our storage unit a year ago, and I was saddened at the loss of all our family tapes. Well, low and behold, MOST of them were in this unopened box, along with my favorite movies, so it was a gift in itself. I spent Sunday watching all the old family stuff. Las,t but not least, we set up the new computer my brother Tom graciously gifted me with, so now I can resume scanning yearbooks with the new CD burner. Thank you, Tom.
Shirley Fong Foey, '65, is off to Cabo again this week with the family. Ahhh, sweet retirement. Send a report when you get home, Shirley!
I've been asked by someone, known only as SAVJMPR@------ , if I knew where to find a '65 and '66 Piedmont High yearbook to scan. Anyone have any ideas??
Another question I've been asked is "Does anyone know what happened to the Time Capsules buried at the courtyard off Park and McArthur when Oakland High was rebuilt??" Does anyone know anything about this? Cyndee Fong Lim, '65, can you find out for us if they've ever been dug up???
Several inquiries from Class of '53 and '54. regarding the open house and any upcoming reunions. (See regular reunion blurbs below for contact info)
SPECIAL NOTICE!!!
Summer's almost here, and with the extra evening hours, you may find yourself spending more time on your computer. How about giving the Message Board a try? A great way to make new friends and also reconnect. Message Boards. Currently, my brother Tom, Graphicsdoc1, moderates our OHS message board on Arborwood. Check it out at http://www.arborwood.com/awforums/show-forum-1.php?fid=4259 . There are lots of other topics out there too, as well as photos of old Oakland and Alameda. Message boards are like emails, but you can jump in any conversation. Go on out and check it out. Tom's put some really funny stories on there, too.
This newsletter is also available at Bev's site, www.oocities.org/ohsnewsletter and www.oakland.yearbookhigh.com , my brother Tom's site, Cyber Kwikway.
Hugs,
Bonnie
The Oakland High Open House was a success even though the weather was awful! Over 200 people showed up throughout the afternoon, and Elliott Lowe, '64 provided us with some photos, which are included at the bottom of the letter as usual. The oldest person to show was a 1928 female grad. Warren Miller, '66, was this your mom? It seems I recall you mentioned she was from that year. Could be brain farts, though. Share some of your mom's experiences with us. I do not know yet if Nestor Sander, '32, made it to the Open House.
There was lots of stuff on sale including memorabilia, t-shirts, and old yearbooks. Yearbooks were $50 and up I'm told, and mostly newer ones. Robert Chan, '71 checked into that as a possibility of obtaining some to scan. Also there was Nancy Sewell, '66, who looks almost the same today as she did back then. Sinful........How does she do it? LOL. (See photos below of her.) There were signup sheets for reunions, so you could be included in the next reunion list for your class. I don't know who went yet. I've asked the committee to provide me with a list of attendees. When I get it, I will post it in the letter so if there is anyone on there you might be looking for, a connection COULD be made! Thank you, Elliott, for the photos! Last year, only 80 people came to the Open House, so this was a definite success. We can make it even better next year.

Dick Youngberg would like to hear from them. D'niel Goldberg, '73 is looking for an old friend named Mario Lee, '73. Maggie McMillan Swinney is looking for Kitty Grodem '63, Margaret Cole 62?, and Susie Huebbe '63. If you have knowledge of these grads, let them know someone is looking for them!
Just a note here. If you are registered at Classmates.com but aren't a Gold Member, and you want to contact someone, write me, and I'll send them your info and email address. I've been a Gold Member for 4 years.
Since the last newsletter we have learned of several recent OHS deaths. We send our condolences to the friends and families of Ray Perry, '40, who died April 11, and Alex Phillips, '42, who passed away May 7, 2003.
We've had information about several other alums who passed away some time ago as you will see below. One of them we cannot place until someone lets us know what class she was in. Any help will be appreciated regarding Sharon Dong, 14 Dec 1944 - 23 Mar 1993. According to her birth year she should have been in the Class of 1962. Can any of you confirm this so her name can be entered on the right memorial page? Please write to Bev at bbevy@012.net.il.
During this time we've also been in contact with alumnae Arleen Thompson Challberg '33, who gave us the names of her classmates who have passed away over the years. Thank you Arleen.

Weight Loss Update! It's been a little over 2 months since the surgery, and , according to my doctor's $800 dollar electronic scale that weighs people over 350 and small trucks, I have lost 68 lbs in 8 weeks. Hurrah! Add that to the 30 I lost right before the surgery, and I'm closing in on 100 lbs soon. I feel so great, it's incredible. I'd recommend the laproscopic surgery and my doctor, Dr. Suh, to anyone! He's terrific, and very caring. I love being able to walk again, and I can eat just about anything I want, just small quantities, so I'm not feeling deprived. My clothes are getting really baggy, so I may soon be going to a new size, still in "X" group, though. AT 358 lbs, I was pretty big, so it will be awhile before I can wear an actual "size". I still have 130 lbs to lose. These are some of my goals that you skinny people take for granted.
.
- 1. Sitting on the floor and being able to get up without the help of paramedics and a crane.
- 2. Squeezing into a restaurant booth without having my boobs lay on top of the table.......
- 3. Having a bra size that doesn't sound like a basketball score (She runs down the court and shoots! It's 54DD for the home team!)
- 4. Fitting in a turnstile at the grocery store (another paramedic moment)
- 5. Getting on the rides at Disneyland. It's total embarrassment when the ride bar won't go down in Toontown.....or the submarines won't let you on because they have enough ballast.
- 6. Getting into bed without the upstairs neighbor hearing my bed groan from the strain.
- 7. Being able to "jump" off a curb and know I won't need crutches to get back up
- 8. Being able to dance and do the twist without fear my boobs will hit me in the eyes. It's tough to explain those black eyes to your boss the next day.
- 9. Climb a flight of stairs in under 45 minutes.
- 10. Order from the Victoria Secrets Catalog
- 11. Walk by a construction site and have them whistle without being paid to do it. ( okay, so they don't whistle at senior citizens....I can still hope)
- 12. I like to be able to undress and find that half my days meals haven't fallen into my bra in the form of crumbs! Of course it's always good for a midnight snack!
- 13. Wear underwear that comes in single digits.
- 14. Not have to use an elephant brush to take a bath!
- 15. I'd like to lie on the couch without my grandkids thinking I'm a climbing toy.
- 16. Wear REAL Levi's and not the elastic band kind.
- 17. Ride a Harley.
- 18. I'd like to lie on my back without fear that my oversize boobs will roll back and suffocate me.
- 19. I'd like to be able to fit in the shower AND close the door!
- 20. Fit down the inner aisles at Wal-Mart
- 21. Not have everyone in town "know" me. Everywhere I go, they always know my order before I give it, or at the checkstand, and the pharmacy, it's first names. Everyone remembers the "Fat Lady". I'd like to go unnoticed and be the invisible woman.
- 22. I'd like to fit into family photos without using the wide angle lens.
- 23. I'd also like to fit into a regular stall in the restroom and not have to use the handicapped one. It's embarrassing when they have to remove the door to get you out of the stall, especially in a restaurant. Your dinner gets cold!
- 24. I'd like to fit behind the wheel of the car again. Before, my giant boobs would get tangled in the steering wheel when I tried to turn. Not that I'd drive, I'd just like to be ABLE to. I have a license, but my family, friends , and co-workers won't let me on the road! Five little accidents in a year, and they won't let me drive anymore. Of course, in fairness, two years ago I drove to the store, for the first time in 5 years, for a lottery ticket, drove over the white parking log, and took out a pole holding up the porch of the liquor store.........
- 25. I'd like clothes NOT made by Omar the Tent maker. Besides, circus stripes make me look huge
- 26. I'd like to get into the pool without the water overflowing.
- 27. I'd like to touch my toes. In fact, I'd like to know if I still HAVE toes. I haven't seen them in years.
- 28. I'd like to sit in the bleachers at the little league games without fear of collapse.
- 29. I'd like to sit in a plastic garden chair. Every time I've tried, the legs seem to slowly bend outward as the chair sinks slowly to the ground.........Kind of like sitting in quicksand.
- 30. I'd like to not have to use the Truck scales in Cajon Pass to weigh myself

And, for those who have asked, update photos since my surgery. Be prepared, I'm still old and ugly! But the double chin is receding like flood waters! By the way, after looking at the photo, I went out and dyed my hair brown again! I had no idea I was so danged GRAY!
