A Summary of Events and Topics of Interest to OHS grads and friends

July 11, 2003

IN THIS ISSUE:

Here it is the middle of July. I don't know where the time goes. Seems like I just did a letter! Sorry for the delay between them.

I received my copy of the '66 reunion yearbook, and it's great. Many pages of color candid photos, and all the portraits are in color as well. A pat on the back to all the committee members who worked on the reunion for '66 and all the work that was put in by Tina Santiago Partridge '66 getting all the addresses and names in the right spots. I enjoyed it and wish I could have been there!

Weight Loss UPDATE: It's been 3 ¾ months, and I'm down to 249. I began losing again, which is good for the old ego. I can now fit into a size 26 ( an actual SIZE, with out an X after it!) and am wearing the new clothes I found hidden in my closet a while back. I haven't joined Curves yet, but still thinking about it. My exercise is mostly coming from walking and the pool. I will try to take some new update pictures in the near future to share with you. I find I have a craving for SOMETHING, I just can't figure out what! Definitely all cravings for candy and cookies and sweets are gone. They don't even look good to me anymore. I still, however, like Popsicles, and ice cream (in small doses). I'm not big on breads anymore either. I've mentioned before I miss flavor, so I bought some Spicy Doritos chips and (okay this is gross) licked all the hot stuff off and threw away the chips. Boy, did I pay for that one! It felt like a hole exploded in my chest for 2 days! Kind of like eating Lye. That is something I won't ever do again! Still, I would do the surgery again in a second. On the 4th of July I was able to attend a performance of my granddaughter at the Sports Park, get tattooed (temp), and shoot hoops for prizes. Last year even if I had attended, it would have been in a wheel chair. Not only did I get my life back, I feel 10-15 years younger! I'm so pleased at the results! Thanks to all of you for your encouragement and suggestions.

Classmates.com has their own show on TV now. They reunite old friends, lovers, enemies, etc. I watched it this week and it's not bad. Some of the reunions are funny, some are just plain boring. A couple of people reunited with old lovers and it's working out. It's on everyday, Monday through Friday at 10 AM on Fox network. Who knows you might be seeing old friends on there! Also if you are interested in reuniting with someone, write them and they may be able to help! Classmates.com certainly reunited a lot of US old OHSers!

FENTONS! If you'd be interested in a mini reunion at Fentons, write to me at bhulse47@yahoo.com or Graphicsdoc1@aol.com . We've had several replies already. This could be really fun for those in the Bay Area. In addition to Tom's (Graphic Doc) photos, Biff went there this week and took some photos of the completed Parlor. It looks great. See a picture attached at the end of the letter. Thanks Tom and Biff!

Nancy Lenihan Scott, '65, wants to let everyone know that there will be a Blues Festival in Packwood, WA on September 20, featuring John Mayall and the Blues Breakers. Tickets are $18 in advance and $23 at the door. Sounds like a fun time for a little reunion of our Washington classmates. Contact Nancy at fancydancer@lewiscounty.com for more information and look at www.destinationpackwood.com for even more info.

Get well soon wishes to our friend and classmate Sheldon Past '66, who just underwent a quadruple bypass. He is on the mend and doing great, and in fact, feels as I did. It's remarkable to find out you can walk and breathe again after thinking that was a thing of the past. It's definitely getting a new life! Congratulations, Shel. Keep improving. Maybe YOU could come to the Fentons reunion! Everyone would love to see you!

Condolences to Susan Reiner Silverman, '65, who lost her brother Rocky, in late June. Rocky didn't go to OHS, but attended Crocker in 61-62, so many of you may have known him. He would have been in fourth or fifth grade then. Susan also sent me a photo to use from the Diablo Cotillion last year, with several OHSers attending. See photos at end of letter.

Carol Klasser Mino '65, reports she recently visited her daughter Rachel when she graduated from Northwestern Medical School, and then helped her move to Tucson, AZ. She'll be doing a residency at University of Arizona. Her youngest daughter will be going on a "dig" for the summer. Carol recently lost her mother, Patricia Mae Conger Klasser, an OHS grad from 1942. Her mom always said they had one of the most active reunion classes. Those of you who lived in Dimond District, and even those who didn't, may remember Klasser's Bakery. The smells from within were heavenly, and even today, when I smell fresh bread and cookies baking, I'm brought back to the old days of visiting the bakery with my mother. Condolences to the Klasser family from all of us.

Our Skyline Adoptee, Biff Gudmundsen, '65, has been busy taking photos. He is putting together a disk of all the old photos/new photos he has and will even put the music of your choice as background. For more info, write biff at biff22@comcast.net. One of his Fenton's photos is included in today's letter. Robert Chan, '71, also has offered to take photos. He still lives in the Glenview district. His email is Greatrcc@aol.com . Bob had completed several yearbooks, when his computer went down, and he lost all the info. He is again scanning 1968, and is about halfway there.

I've finally completed 1960! It's available now. Available is 1932, 1936, 1960, 1964, 1965, Seniors only for 61 and 63, Seniors only for Skyline 66, 67,68, and the reunion pix for the 36th reunion, and the reunion yearbook for the 36th reunion for 1965. Also available, 61's 35th reunion yearbook. McChesney 1959, and McChesney 1962. CD's are $10. Write if you are interested. I can put more than one book on a CD. I am currently scanning 1962, and, with help from Jeannie Mills and Craig Hansen, it should be done soon. Also, the summer supplement for '62.

We are currently seeking a '66 yearbook to scan. Visit the Class of 62 website at www.ohs62.com

The radio show on Kaspers was well received. If you'd like to hear it, you can go to www.soundprint.org and listen to all the history. And I've been told you can buy Casper's hot dogs in BULK at Costco! Not the same as the soft squishy bun, and works you get at Casper's but it will do. I previously misreported that it was Kasper's not Casper's hot dogs. Sorry for the inconvenience.

And finally, my brother Tom writes the following:

I have added a new page on Old Oakland, CLASSMATES SEEKING CLASSMATES, a place where alumni can post a seek for a classmate using their email or my forwarding service. The page has a format for submission , and can include a brief personal message , I will post the ad, assign a posting number for reply and reference , and they can contact each other on their own from there (or not...)

You can find it at oakland.yearbookhigh.com/whats_new.html

Love,
Bon

New additions to the Memorial Pages

As always during these past months, many thanks must be sent to Bob Chan '71 for his tireless work in finding and scanning Oaken Buckets. Without his work the memorial site would not be nearly as comprehensive as it is. THANKS, Bob!!

I (Beverly) will be away from home for nearly 6 weeks this summer, mid-July till end-August. I will, however, have access to my email. So, any information you have during that time, please pass it on to me although I won't be able to get it online. I will still be able to put it aside for attention when I get home. If you should find that my mailbox is full and your mail bounces, just sent it a couple of days later after I have had a chance to empty my inbox. Thanks for everyone's help.

I guess you could call this weeks story The Paramedics, Pepper Spray and the Party Porch.............

The old man is at it again! Not only is he still adding to the jungle of plants and trees on the porch, he has discovered noise makers. Oh yes, noisemakers.

For Christmas he received a plastic Frog that runs on batteries and "Ribet's" every time you walk by. He also got a little plastic Dog that barks. They were cute and entertaining for a while.

One day we were in Wal-Mart and as he walked past a display, a plastic Robin started to sing "Rockin' Robin". He bought it, and placed it with the other "animals" on the porch. Then he found a bird that sang the old Carpenters hit, "sing", and one that sings " When the Red Red Robin comes Bob Bob Bobbin along". They were added to the porch sanctuary. Two weeks ago he bought a bluebird that sings "Zippedee Do Dah". All the birds can also be set to "chirp", which is just as annoying

It came to his attention you could order this crap from a catalog, which our neighbor so KINDLY provided him. He ordered a roaring lion, a shrieking elephant, and a laughing hyena. It sounds like the Jungle Book when you enter our porch now.

Neighbor children think it's the coolest thing to run up to our front door just to hear the "animals" go off.

This is of course, leading up to another story.

Last week, my father in law, who lives with us, was having trouble breathing and wanted me to call 911. So I did.

Now, it's pretty bad when in a town this size you can call 911 and the operator answers, "Hey, Bonnie, what's up this time?" instead of "911 State your emergency"! I guess we've gotten a reputation for Crisis and Chaos when it comes to our family!

It was 11 PM when the cops, fire trucks and ambulance rolled into the parking lot. They exited their vehicles and ran toward the front door.

Before I could warn them, the zoo went off. The elephant and lion were so loud that the cop freaked out and Pepper sprayed them out of fear! Unfortunately, he also hit two of the 3 responding paramedics/fireman at the same time. This led to another 911 call to dispatch a second team of paramedics to care for the paramedics who'd been sprayed! The third paramedic headed into my father-in-law's room, while the pepper spray victims were led to my living room couches.

Just as the lone healthy paramedic entered the bedroom, I heard a blood curdling scream. What the heck? I ran in behind him.

"WHO THE HELL IS THAT?" the paramedic yelled, as he pointed to the far corner of the room. "Get him the Hell out of here!"

What he was yelling at was a coat stand.......I admit I could see his concern. My father in law's coat was draped over several sweaters and a pair of pants that were hanging there, his CPAP (sleeping machine) mask was draped eerily over the top, and his cane looked as if it was being wielded by this "strange person". His hat completed the scene. I could see where this kid thought he was some weird maniac killer! After the porch fiasco, he refused to stay in the room unless I beheaded the nightmare in the corner!

Holy Crap, what mess. The neighbors were starting to gather outside to see what the excitement was. Someone began selling bottled water and popcorn to the forming crowd. Hey, anyway to make a buck!

The second paramedic unit rolled on scene. By this time, though, Mike had turned all the animals off. The ambulance was trying to get the gurney through the front door, which was impossible with the swing and all the chairs on the porch. The upstairs neighbors began to move all the furniture out of the way so the ambulance attendants could get in the house! Inside the living room, the second set of paramedics were washing out people eyes and treating them for the pepper spray. The cop, of course, was fit to be tied. Now he had to fill out a report on WHY he peppered sprayed several plastic toys and 2 paramedics responding to an emergency!

The gurney now inside the apartment, the ambulance attendants found it was stuck in the hallway as they tried to enter the bedroom. There was no way they could get inside the room. They eventually had to climb over the gurney and remove my father in law by making a makeshift chair with their hands. I'm sure my father in law was never so glad to be out of the house!!!

As soon as they transported him to the hospital (where he spent the next 2 days recuperating from the excitement), and the police and paramedics had left, we put the porch back in order.

The Sheriff's Log in the local paper showed the following: 10:56 PM Paramedics to 2300 hundred block of Muriel. . 10:57 Police to 2300 block of Muriel Drive; 10:58 Ambulance to 2300 block of Muriel Drive. 11:00 Paramedics to 2300 block of Muriel Drive; 11:02 Additional fire engines to 2300 block of Muriel Drive................sigh. Everyone knows where we live. They might just as well have printed our name........

Mike has turned all the animals back on. You'd think he'd learn! We're lucky we didn't get cited!

Things are just now getting back to normal. His Dad is home, minus his coat rack, which we put in storage just in case we had to call the paramedics again. The Pepper sprayed animals survived the ordeal nicely and are working as good as ever.

The neighbor across the hall gave Mike another Catalog. Seems there's also plastic horses, sheep, wolves, and other little noisemakers he can order for the porch. He's been eyeing two 12 foot Palm trees at the local Nursery, along with more plants. Wal-Mart just got 3 new birds in, which I'm sure will soon be adorning the porch with the others. I'm afraid to let him go shopping alone! If I knew how, I'd make a sound byte to attach to the letter!!!!

Stay tuned for the continuing adventures of animal boy and his front porch!
