Photo from Syvari (Svir) River in East Karelia. The Finnish troops advanced to their ancient land of Kalevala 1941-42, which was gradually taken over by Russians from Moscow and Novgorod beginning in the 13th Century. Now the Finns thought they had recaptured their lost mythical land. But in 1944, beginning at D-Day, Finnish forces gradually pulled back and East Karelia once more belonged to strangers.
