The Sunfish
helios’ white rays, like daggers, pierce
the dull gray surface of a murky pond.
a sunfish swims in sprezzatura.
golden silk fins swaying;
this idler to the noisy set
effortlessly waves to the argent orb above.
white cotton dulls the piercing rays.
six sets of rigid gray square jaws
pummel through the clouded water,
snatch the silken fins in a kaleidoscope of teeth,
rip lace to shrapnel, fling ornate ornaments---
a rudimentary quartering of the golden sunfish.
white cotton shifts, rays sharpen,
but no light will penetrate the crimson water,
only bounce off golden strands of silk
shining brighter than the sun. glittering stars
like cherubs rise light as paper to the surface,
glistening shreds of gold lace beneath a cerulean sky.
