The Tumbleweed
Twirling, tumbling tawny tumbleweed
Swirling, a kaleidoscope of saffron and carmine
Whirls in centrifuge across arid plains
In mid October.
The dizzy loose-knit ball of golden grass,
Flips, dips, dances across dry Oklahoma plains,
Over a khaki expanse of cocoa powder dust
In vertiginous bliss.
To the tumbleweed in vertigo on barren plains,
The lemon sun, cerulean sky, and sand
Swirl, twirl together in a tie-dye dream
Splattered against a new plane.
Bemused, the haphazard basket twirls around
And around, emblazoned yellow swirls into red,
Broken and fragmented straw blows away
Scattered across the plains.
