Referee Neale Barry carried out an 8:30am pitch inspection at Boundary Park today and it took him just 5 minutes to decide that the game against Tranmere Rovers could not go ahead. Although the wings of the pitch were relatively soft it was found that when the pitch was exposed down the centre the severe overnight frost had penetrated the covers leaving the surface rock hard and the referee had no hesitation in declaring the match postponed. Latics Chief Executive Alan Hardy said, "After checking the pitch yesterday we were very hopeful of getting the New Years Day game on, but temperatures last night dropped to as low as -7 at Boundary Park. "The covers will really only keep frost out down to -3 so they had a severe test last night. "With one and a half inches of snow it was hoped that it would provide added insulation, but unfortunately it was not enough." Mr Hardy added, "I would like to thank the 30 or more volunteers that turned out this morning ready to remove the covers if the referee had given the go-ahead, just like everyone at the club they were desperate to see the game played. "Also groundstaff and helpers had worked tremendously hard yesterday in clearing the turnstile entrances and making the ground accommodation safe only to be thwarted by last nights severe temperatures." No Rest For Players
Even though the New Years Day match was postponed Head Coach Mick Wadsworth brought the players in for training. With all the training grounds frozen up the players went through their training session at the JJB Indoor Soccer Dome at Trafford Park. There is just no relaxing as Latics aim to claim at least a place in the end of season Play-offs.
In the only other game of the day to survive the freezing weather Reading left it late to beat Port Vale 2-0 at the Madejski Stadium. With the game heading for a goalless draw Alan Pardew's men were handed an 83rd minute penalty which was converted by substitute Jamie Cureton. And then with just one minute left Cureton grabbed his ninth goal of the season and the second of the match to wrap up the points for Reading. The result moves Pardew's men up to fourth in the league.
