Oldham Evening Chronicle (www.oldham-chronicle.co.uk) Hot-shot Eyres in line for return ATHLETIC could welcome back three old heads for the vital derby clash at Wigan tomorrow. Two squad regulars are ruled out of the battle of the Latics, but David Eyres, John Sheridan and Lee Duxbury are hoping for recalls. Eyres, Athletic’s 38-year-old top scorer, missed the draw at Bury on Tuesday with an ankle injury. Player-coach Sheridan (37) has been absent for six matches due to long-standing problems with his knee. And fellow midfielder Duxbury (32) hasn’t played since picking up a hamstring strain at Bristol City five games ago. But Sheridan and Duxbury had half a game for the reserves last night, while Eyres is set to feature despite not training this week. Their return to fitness compensates for losing Paul Murray and David Reeves as Athletic try to cement a play-off position. Murray, who has become a key figure since signing from Southampton, serves a ban for being booked five times in the space of a month. He only misses one game, but the Reeves situation may become more worrying for coach Mick Wadsworth. Athletic’s well-travelled striker suffered a bizarre injury in midweek when, during the warm-up at Bury, he was hit in the face by a ball. Reeves was temporarily blinded in one eye and had double vision in the other. Doctors now fear he has a detached retina – which would require surgery – and he has been told to avoid sudden movements. Tomorrow’s game could bring a return for Julien Baudet, who did well as a substitute on Tuesday night. And midfielder Tony Carss, back after injury, could be in the squad for the first time since last October. ATHLETIC (from): Kelly, Clegg, Beharall, Balmer, Baudet, Armstrong, Appleby, D Sheridan, J Sheridan, Eyres, Corazzin, Smart, Colusso, McNiven, Holden, Duxbury, Rickers, Carss. WIGAN (from): Filan, Jackson, de Zeeuw, de Vos, McMillan, Dalglish, Dinning, Mitchell, Kennedy, McCulloch, Liddell, Green, Brannan, Roberts, Nolan, Ashcroft. Wayne Gill made a goalscoring comeback last night when the reserves met Manchester City in the Manchester Senior Cup. The midfielder, who hasn’t played in the first team since October, helped his side to a 1-1 draw, but they lost out on penalties. Tickets for Athletic’s home game with Stoke on April 6 go on open sale tomorrow. On police advice, there will be no cash admission whatsoever on the day. Darren back on the play-off beat THERE have been obvious comparisons this season between Athletic and their next opponents, North-West neighbours Wigan. The two clubs, who meet at the JJB Stadium tomorrow, are trying to follow similar paths into division one and beyond. Both had huge financial problems until a rich benefactor came along with his eyes on the big prize. For Athletic owner Chris Moore, read Wigan chairman Dave Whelan. And both are trying to buy their way to success by paying hefty transfer fees and money which can attract players from higher divisions. If you’ve got it, you may as well spend it – ignore any club who begrudge that approach because they would love the same luxury themselves. The difference, however, is that Wigan have been at it for longer and had time to splash out bigger sums. For the last three seasons, Athletic’s close rivals have reached a play-off place only for promotion to stay teasingly out of reach. In last year’s semi-final, they drew 0-0 at home to Reading and led 1-0 away with four minutes to go. Then Reading scored twice. The previous campaign saw them reach the final thanks to Darren Sheridan’s goal against Millwall, yet lose 3-2 to Gillingham’s late double at Wembley. And 1999 brought the first dose of heartache as Manchester City knocked them out, again by a one-goal margin. The constant blows were bound to leave a mark and Wigan have been disappointing this time round, never threatening to make it four play-off campaigns in a row. They have, though, recovered from an awful start and Athletic will face a team with only three defeats in their last 22 games. Chairman Whelan is no stranger to controversy and seems to have an extremely itchy trigger finger when dealing with managers. But there are always candidates to take up the challenge. Current incumbent Paul Jewell was the sixth boss in three years when appointed last summer. Wigan’s likely team tomorrow is one of the most expensively assembled in division two, and that’s without £1million-plus of talent left on the sidelines. Their defence has a true cosmopolitan feel, with five different nationalities doing a job the UN would be proud of. Goalkeeper John Filan, an Australian, made his club debut against Athletic in December just after a £600,000 move from Blackburn. Directly in front of him are Dutchman Arjan de Zeeuw and Canadian Jason de Vos, who could have a fascinating battle with international team-mate Carlo Corazzin tomorrow. Right-back Matt Jackson is slightly less exotic, having been born in West Yorkshire, but he enjoyed a fine career with Everton and Norwich. Finally, Scotsman Steve McMillan has looked a shrewd acquisition since his big-money move from Motherwell. Despite selling 11-goal Simon Haworth to Tranmere last week – they cashed in before he left under the Bosman ruling – Wigan also boast a threat going forward. Winger Peter Kennedy is a Northern Ireland international who played alongside Allan Smart at Watford, midfielder Tony Dinning cost £1million from Wolves and the top scorer is in-form Andy Liddell. Liddell bagged a hat-trick in midweek as Cambridge were swept aside in front of just 3,535 spectators – a depressing drop in the ocean at the 25,000-capacity JJB. In stark contrast to Athletic’s midweek venue, a packed and highly-charged Gigg Lane, it seems the Wigan public are overwhelmed by indifference as the season nears its end.

Allan Smart may be forced to sit out Saturday’s important clash. The in-form striker went over an ankle in training on Thursday and although he is included in the squad to face Wigan at the JJB tomorrow, his appearance will be subject to an early morning fitness test. If Smart misses out tomorrow then Latics will have lost three strikers within the space of a week, David Reeves is out with an eye injury and John Eyre underwent a double hernia operation on Monday. RETURN OF THE HITMAN

It has been exclusively revealed to the Official Site that Tony Carss is back in contention after recovering from injury and coming through a number of reserve fixtures. Carss is a fans' favourite and his skills and movement earned him Player of the Year last season. His last game for the Club was back on 8th September against Blackpool at home. That day the Latics enjoyed a good victory, Darren Sheridan and Lee Duxbury finding the net on that occasion. Sheridan and Duxbury are also both included in the chosen squad for tomorrow incidentally. Perhaps that may be the good Omen to spur the lads on to three points at the JJB.

TEAMtalk (www.teamtalk.co.uk) Murray misses Latics derby
The Latics are without in-form Paul Murray for Saturday's big derby clash against Wigan at the JJB Stadium as he is serving a suspension.  The former England B midfielder is forced to sit out the game because of a one-match ban after totting up five yellow cards. There is also a doubt over striker Allan Smart, scorer of four goals in three games, who went over on an ankle in training. He will take a late fitness test leaving long-term injury-victim Tony Carss, who has played just eight games all season because of calf and ankle injuries, on standby. But veteran top-scorer David Eyres is back in the reckoning after winning his fitness battle over a badly bruised foot and ankle. Mick Wadsworth's play-off hopefuls go into the contest with plenty of confidence after just one defeat in the last nine games. But he warned: "It is going to be another tough one. Wigan have some very good players and they had an excellent win in midweek when they scored four goals. "They are also one of the better teams we have played this season and they came away from our place with a 1-1 draw when they gave us a very good game." Wadsworth continued: "Wigan also know what it is like to be in the play-offs. It has been a bit hit and miss for them and they just can't get out of this division. "Paul Jewell and his staff will feel they have under achieved and I am sure they will be going all out to end the season on a high. We will have to be on our guard." The game will have some added spice with Darren Sheridan and Stuart Balmer returning to their former club for the first time since their summer switch to Boundary Park. Oldham (squad): Kelly, Clegg, Beharall, Baudet, Armstrong, D Sheridan, Appleby, Colusso, Eyres, Balmer, Duxbury, J Sheridan, McNiven, Holden and Rickers.

Reeves told to rest up
David Reeves has seen a specialist for his injured eye and has been told not to train until next Monday, when he is due for another check-up.  The 34-year-old striker was hit full in the face by a ball during the warm-up session before Tuesday night's derby game against Bury. He was knocked backwards in the freak accident and lay on the ground before team-mate Matty Appleby realised he was in real trouble. Reeves recovered to start the game, but had to come off after 28 minutes as he was unable to see in one eye and suffering from double vision in the other. He has been ordered not to train or even run until Monday at the earliest when he will again be assessed. One eye is badly bloodshot and there are concerns he may have a detached retina, which could mean surgery for the experienced player.

Reserves crash to City loss The reserves drew 1-1 with Manchester City's second string in the Manchester Senior Cup last night, but lost out in a penalty shoot-out. The round-robin set-up of the localised competition means that there has to be a result on the night, but that haunted The Latics in the end as they slipped to a narrow 4-3 loss in the spot-kicks.
Injury-jinxed Wayne Gill, who has only played three senior games since becoming former boss Andy Ritchie's record £75,000 signing from Tranmere, was on target last night. His goal counted for little as City eventually came through the tie and assured themselves a place in the final. The Latics could yet meet them in the last two clash, but they first have to beat Manchester United reserves - at Boundary Park on Monday night - and Bury on a date which is yet to be fixed. Kennedy back for Latics battle
Peter Kennedy is set to return following suspension as Wigan aim to win the 'battle of the Latics' with neighbours Oldham tomorrow.  The main concern for Wigan chief Paul Jewell surrounds injured pair Gary Teale and Matt Jackson, both of whom look likely to miss out. They were injured during the midweek win over Cambridge and, while Jewell will give them as long as possible to recover, the signs are not good. He will be looking for an improvement in defence and Jackson's place will probably go to Ian Nolan, who came on to replace him during the Cambridge win. Similarly, Paul Dalglish, who replaced the injured Teale in midweek, will also probably be given the nod should he fail to recover. Jewell will be looking for his front line of Andy Liddell and Lee McCulloch to carry on where they left off against Cambridge, the pair earning great praise from their manager for their efforts in the 4-1 win. Liddell said: "It should be a cracking game because Oldham are challenging hard for the play-offs. We battered them at their place but they snatched a lucky goal at the end to force a 1-1 draw." Meanwhile Oldham will be missing their influential midfielder Paul Murray for the clash. Wigan (probable): Filan, Nolan, De Vos, De Zeeuw, McMillan, Green, Mitchell, Dinning, Dalglish, Liddell, McCulloch.

Latics ready for summer spending spree
Chairman Dave Whelan has sounded a battle-cry ahead of a round of summer spending by vowing to break the bank for a new striker.  The Latics have as good as given up on making the play-offs this season, forcing the multi-millionaire owner and his boss Paul Jewell into long-term planning. And the summer will see Jewell splash the cash, with a striker top of their priorities. Wigan have tried and failed for much of the season to land a proven goalscorer with Jewell in the market for a number of potential front men including Mansfield's soon to be free-agent Chris Greenacre and Shrewsbury's Luke Rogers. Greenacre still remains a realistic summer target, especially as he would be on a Bosman free, but Whelan is aware, and prepared, that the Latics may well have to spend big to get the right man. In talking to local fans' groups, Whelan has revealed that he is - in his own words - ready to "break the bank" to land the right man. And that could mean Jewell aiming even higher than the likes of Greenacre and Rogers. But one player the Latics will definitely not be signing is midfield target Damien Johnson. Wigan had a keen interest in the Northern Ireland international but he has signed a deal with Birmingham today.
