Oldham Evening Chronicle (www.oldham-chronicle.co.uk) Eyres agrees to new Latics deal TOP-SCORER David Eyres has boosted Athletic on the eve of their clash with promotion chasers Bristol City. The in-form veteran signed a one-year extension to his contract, keeping him at Boundary Park until the end of next season. Eyres has hit 12 goals this term, including a purple patch of nine in the last two months, and his new deal is an early birthday present. The former Blackpool, Burnley and Preston winger – recruited on a free transfer in October 2000 – will be 38 a week on Tuesday. Eyres could soon face a battle with £2million-rated Cristian Colusso, another flair player who operates on the left-hand side. Colusso is gaining sharpness after his loan move from Rosario Central in Argentina’s premier league. For now, Athletic hope to name the same line-up which enjoyed successive 2-0 wins against Notts County and Brighton. Midfield playmaker John Sheridan is recovering well from a knee injury after resting throughout the week. The ex-Eire international is left to write his own schedule as Athletic know he sometimes needs to be wrapped in cotton wool. Mick Wadsworth says Sheridan is like the quarter-back in American Football – he dictates the pattern of his team’s play. In the unlikely event of Sheridan being ruled out, club captain Lee Duxbury will slot into central midfield. Colusso is set to be on the bench along with Allan Smart, who has struggled to dislodge Carlo Corazzin and David Reeves up front.
ATHLETIC (from): Rachubka, McNiven, Beharall, Baudet, Armstrong, Murray, J Sheridan, Appleby, Eyres, Reeves, Corazzin, Kelly, Holden, Duxbury, Colusso, Smart, Balmer. Bristol City should welcome back Tony Thorpe, their 14-goal leading scorer, after a hamstring strain. But they have a problem in defence as ever-present Matt Hill is suspended, while his obvious replacement, Kevin Amankwaah, is injured.
BRISTOL CITY (from): Phillips, Lever, Carey, Coles, Murray, Bell, Burnell, Tinnion, Brown, Thorpe, Peacock, Brown, Hulbert, Jones, Atwell, Clist, Doherty, Stowell. Matthew Tipton, who left Athletic in a free transfer this week, is set to make his Macclesfield debut at home to Bristol Rovers tomorrow. Tranmere are hoping to sign Wigan striker Simon Haworth before their visit to Boundary Park on Tuesday. In-form Latics facing threat from all sides MICK WADSWORTH believes almost half the clubs in division two are involved in the desperate scramble for promotion. And, as his side prepare for tomorrow’s trip to Bristol City, the head coach is looking forward to a thrilling final third of the season. The Ashton Gate clash is one of many games Athletic face against their play-off rivals –– they couldn’t have a much tougher run-in. But, though Athletic have spent just a few days in the top six since Wadsworth took over, he is encouraged by recent form. Wadsworth said: “The surprising factor is that we’ve won seven and drawn one of our last 10 games, accruing 22 points out of 30, and our position in the league has hardly improved. “That would normally be championship form –– I can’t believe we aren’t higher up after doing so well. “It’s an amazing situation, but those 10 games have kept us in contention for the play-offs. “The victory against Brighton last week was obviously very important and, if you look at it the other way, a couple more defeats would have left us six or seven places lower. “It’s amazingly tight. There are 11 teams still fighting for the top six, so it’s vital we keep our run going. “You are never going to win every game, but hopefully we can provide an exciting end to the season. “The run-in is tough, but this is our fixture list and we have to get on with playing these teams – it’s as simple as that. “All games are key, no matter who you come up against, and if we are beating the teams around us we can gain an advantage over them.” Midweek results went against Athletic, beginning with Brighton’s win against Reading which took the automatic promotion places further out of reach. It will take quite some run to make up nine points in 14 fixtures. Brentford then beat Cardiff to leave Wadsworth’s side three points off the play-off zone, while there were also victories for Tranmere and dark horses Wycombe. Tomorrow’s opponents haven’t been in top form recently, but they can still look down on Athletic from fourth place. Bristol City have a settled side and one of the most established strike partnerships in the division. Lee Peacock and Tony Thorpe have netted 27 times between them, again showing the value of combining a big man with a nippy sidekick. They were brought together last season by boss Danny Wilson, who is aiming to provide some stability after City went through a dizzying nine managers in the previous decade. Peacock’s game should hold no surprises for Athletic as he began his career under Wadsworth’s tutelage at Carlisle. The six-footer had a prolific spell at Mansfield before Joe Royle took him to Manchester City, only for his big-money move to fall flat. Thorpe, meanwhile, has always scored consistently throughout a rather tumultuous career with Luton, Fulham and his current employers. The 27-year-old made few friends among the Ashton Gate fans earlier this season as, at the start of City’s promotion push, he announced he would leave when his contract ran out in the summer.ATHLETIC’S RUN-IN Feb 16 Bristol City (A), 19 Tranmere (H), 23 Peterborough (A), 26 Brentford (H)Mar 2 Colchester (H), 5 Bury (A), 9 Wigan (A), 16 Cardiff (H), 23 Reading (A), 30 Cambridge (H)Apr 1 Huddersfield (A), 6 Stoke (H), 13 Wycombe (A), 20 QPR (H)
Rivals match previews JKLatics.com (oldhamathletic.rivals.com) bristolcitynet.co.uk (bristolcity.rivals.net) Wadsworth Plots City's Downfall Seventh place Oldham arrive at Ashton Gate this weekend to take on fifth placed City in a match crucial to both sides play-off aspirations, indeed Danny Wilson's men - currently experiencing indifferent form - could be replaced in the top six by Saturday's opponents, should they succumb to a third loss in five matches. The visitors look more than capable of handing out such a defeat, coming into the weekend showdown following seven wins in ten league matches, averaging over two goals a game during that time - their remarkable run capped last week by comprehensive victory over second placed Brighton. The Lancashire club have been making steady progress since manager Mick Wadsworth - formerly Carlisle, Scarborough and Colchester boss and a coach at Newcastle under Bobby Robson - took over from Andy Ritchie, the new man in charge at Boundary Park only beaten three times in his fourteen league games at the helm. Wadsworth's changes have been quick and effective, gone are promising young goalscorers Mark Allott and Matthew Tipton - to Chesterfield and Macclesfield respectively - among eight recent departees, whilst in their place have arrived veteran hot-shot David Reeves, Watford winger Allan Smart, former QPR star Paul Murray, Bury's Chris Armstrong and Tranmere's Wayne Gill.
Reeves, 34, has 3 goals in 7 games since signing from Chesterfield, Latics the 11th club in a prolific career for the lower league journeyman, who has recently passed both the 600 career starts mark and 200 career goals mark since joining the Lancashire outfit. Murray, 25, has been the other key arrival, 3 goals in 12 starts since signing from Premiership Southampton, having made his name at QPR after impressing as a trainee with hometown club Carlisle. Oldham's main dangerman however is 37 year old top-scorer David Eyres, based in Lancashire throughout his career following lengthy spells with Blackpool, Burnley and Preston, the experienced veteran has 11 goals already this season from 30 starts, taking his career tally to 140 from 614 outings. Other threats up front include 30 year old Canadian striker Carlo Corazzin - the ex-Cambridge, Plymouth and Northamptoon hot-shot with seven goals this season from 17 starts - and 27 year old summer signing from Hull, John Eyre, the former Scunthorpe goalscorer in his second spell at Boundary Park after breaking into professional football 8 years ago with the club, 6 goals from 18 starts this campaign.
In midfield the Latics regularly feature brothers John and Darren Sheridan, John, the 37 year old former Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday Irish international with 705 career appearances, 102 goals and 2 world cups under his belt, and his junior, Darren, a summer signing from Wigan, the 34 year old former Barnsley regular blighted this season however by three red cards - including two last month! Other players to watch include long serving 32 year old midfielder Lee Duxbury, 6 goals this season from 36 starts, having just reached the 200 start mark for Oldham among 594 during his career, whilst 32 year old Scottish defender Stuart Balmer is another regular, 5 goals from 36 starts this campaign, the long-time former Charlton and Wigan man just two short of 400 career starts.
Manager Wadsworth has kept adding to his side, and 29 year old long serving Barnsley defender Matty Appleby arrived on loan last month, already with two goals in five games for his new club, and a permanent move seemingly in the offing - although it is another even more recent signing that is generating most interest among the Lancashire outfit and its supporters. £2 million rated Argentine midfielder Cristian Calusso has arrived on loan from Rosario Central until the end of the season in an audacious deal struck by boss Wadsworth, the highly rated young player having represented his country at Under-20 and Under-23 level, and already having shown flashes of brilliance in his debut as substitute last week. On paper, it is therefore clear how an Oldham side that have struggled in recent seasons are now challenging for a play-off place, and City will need to be at their best against a team coming off seven league wins in ten games - Danny Wilson all too aware that defeat at Ashton Gate could see the Latics replace them in the play-off places.

Team News
Bristol City Top scorer Tony Thorpe is back in the frame for Saturday's match after sitting out last week's game due to hamstring problems, whilst keeper Mike Stowell could challenge Steve Phillips. That's the good news for Danny Wilson, who has defender Matt Hill missing his first league game of the season with a ban, Mark Lever stands by. Lee Matthews (ankle), Tommy Doherty (knee), and Kevin Amankwaah (hamstring) are all set to miss out with continuing injuries.OldhamTalisman midfielder John Sheridan is doubtful for the Ashton Gate showdown, currently under treatment for a knee injury. That could mean a full debut for diminutive Argentinian loan sensation Cristian Calusso, the £2 million rated former Under-23 international already having shown glimpses of his talent as a substitute last week. Matthew Tipton, Ryan Sugden and Philip Salt have all played their last Oldham games after departing this week. More to follow...

They Said ItBristol City "We are always confident of winning games at Ashton Gate and this is an important one because we can enhance our own promotion prospects and dent those of a close rival." Danny Wilson Oldham

"You have to play games like these if you are going to win anything. It will certainly show if we are good enough. I like games like these and it may suit us, who knows?" Mick Wadsworth

TEAMtalk (www.teamtalk.co.uk) Loan star to miss out
Cristian Colusso will not start tomorrow's clash with Bristol City as Mick Wadsworth wants to ease the Argentinian into English football. The on-loan midfielder was set to be in the starting line up against City after impressing a watching Wadsworth when he played the full 90 minutes of a midweek reserve team game. However, the Latics boss explained he wants to slowly introduce Colusso into the fold. "He needs a gentle introduction to the hurly-burly of the English game," he said. The Latics take on promotion rivals City on Saturday knowing a win will put them back in the play-off places. Wadsworth said: "We have won seven and drawn two of our last 11 games, but we have still not made any impression on the top six. "If we had been near the bottom and put in a run like that we would have shot half-way up the table. But it just shows how tight it is at the top. "This is a crucial stage of the season and with other sides around you winning it is vital that we keep picking up three points as well. "This is another big game for us but we showed last week against second-placed Brighton that we are up for the challenge. "We can have a big say in the promotion race, that's for sure."
The only doubt is over veteran midfielder John Sheridan, who has a knee problem and will undergo a late fitness test. Wadsworth added: "Bristol have been a bit hit and miss for the last month, but they have still had a very good season. "It should be a difficult, but exciting, game and there will be some very good players on view. "If we win we will be level on points with them - but if we lose we will be six points behind them. "A victory would give us a foothold in the top six and we can then take it from there." Oldham (from): Rachubka, McNiven, J Sheridan, Appleby, Corazzin, Eyres, Murray, Beharall, Reeves, Armstrong, Baudet, Duxbury, Holden, Smart, Colusso, Rickers, Balmer, Kelly.

Eyres signs new deal
Midfielder David Eyres has signed an extension to his contract, which will keep him at Boundary Park for another season. Eyres has been one of The Latics' most consistent performers this season and is top scorer with 12 goals. He will be 39 when the new deal is due for renewal. The Latics are also still trying to hammer out personal terms with on-loan Matty Appleby and are waiting for a reply from to 29-year-old midfielder after making him an offer. Appleby, who is being given a free transfer by Barnsley, will complete his month's loan spell after Saturday's game at Bristol City. If pay talks can't be finalised, it is almost certain that he will be offered a second month on loan.

Lever eyes Latics start
Mark Lever looks set to make his first start since November in tomorrow's home match with Oldham Athletic, after losing his place to Danny Coles. Experienced central defender Lever has been out in the cold since losing his place to the youngster and at one time was thought to be attracting transfer interest from his former club Grimsby Town. But nothing came of that and Lever has been forced to accept a place on the bench since ending last year on the injured list. Now a one-match suspension for Matt Hill and Kevin Amankwaah's continuing hamstring problems have combined to give Lever hope of a fresh chance. Unless Amankwaah makes an unexpected recovery, Lever will line up at the back alongside Louis Carey and Coles, in what will be his first start since the shock FA Cup defeat by Leyton Orient on November 17. City are likely to make one other change, with Tony Thorpe available again after a slight hamstring problem. The 14-goal top scorer looks set to replace Marvin Brown after the teenager made his first league start in the 2-1 defeat at Wycombe Wanderers last Saturday. Meanwhile, Mike Stowell has been back in training this week after a knee injury, but seems unlikely to displace Steve Phillips after some consistent displays by the younger goalkeeper. Tommy Doherty remains under treatment for a knee problem. Oldham arrive at Ashton Gate as one of the Second Division's form teams and Danny Wilson has warned that City face a tough test. Bristol City (probable) Phillips; Carey, Lever, Coles; Murray, Burnell, Tinnion, A.Brown, Bell; Peacock, Thorpe.

New duo set for debuts
Matthew Tipton and Steve Macauley are set to go straight into the team to face Bristol Rovers tomorrow but Kevin Keen is out with a calf injury. Tipton, signed on Wednesday from Oldham, will take his place in attack alongside Lee Glover and Rickie Lambert as boss David Moss reverts to a 4-3-3 formation. This means out-of-form Kyle Lightbourne will remain on the bench as Moss bids to improve his side's poor goalscoring record. Macauley rejoined Macc on-loan from Crewe yesterday and will come in alongside Darren Tinson at the heart of the defence in place of Dave Ridler. Midfielder Chris Priest is serving the final game of his two-match ban and Moss is likely to play Chris Byrne, loanee David Smith and youngster Danny Whitaker in midfield. The only other change from the side which drew 1-1 at Scunthorpe on Tuesday could be the recall of goalkeeper Lee Martin following the blunder by Steve Wilson which led to Steve Torpey's second-half equaliser. Meanwhile, Keen has missed the last two weeks but could be in contention for Tuesday night's trip to Kidderminster. Macc will be anxious to gain a much-needed victory after taking only one point from their last four games. Bristol Rovers have also struggled this season after being pre-season favourites for the title. However, they have been boosted by the news that injured duo Simon Bryant and Ross Weare are pushing for a place in the first-team after successfully coming through a midweek outing for the reserves.

Western Daily Press (www.westpress.co.uk) TONY'S ITCHING TO GO AGAIN TONY Thorpe is fit and raring to go again against Oldham tomorrow after shaking off the hamstring problem that kept him out of last weekend's defeat at Wycombe. Bristol City's 14-goal top scorer is preparing to lead the attack against the Latics in a "must-win" encounter, according to the striker. With Marvin Brown enjoying a promising full League debut in the 2-1 defeat at Adams Park, Thorpe says an instant return is far from guaranteed. But it would be a surprise, with City back on home soil, if the transfer-listed marksman were not to team up with Lee Peacock against in-form Oldham, though boss Danny Wilson was today refusing to rule 18year-old Brown out of contention. Regardless of whether he features or not, Thorpe is just delighted that the hamstring complaint has not escalated into anything more serious. It was the first time the former Luton and Fulham forward had missed a League game this season. Now he's eyeing a swift comeback and explained: "I'd been experiencing a few pains in my backside which started to creep into my hamstring and it was proving quite difficult to overcome. "I had a fitness test before the Wycombe game but was never going to make it. But I've been training all week and we'll have to see now whether I get my place back, because "There are teams like Tranmere and Huddersfield poised to strike while we have some big games against the top teams coming up next month. Ask anyone around the club and they'll tell you we need three points tomorrow and nothing less." Boss Danny Wilson needs no telling of the threat Oldham pose and said: "They have a new board who've made some serious funds available, but credit to the team because they have performed well for the new manager (Mick Wadsworth). "But I've been pleased with our defending in recent weeks and felt we've been unlucky to concede the goals we have done, and our attacking has been nothing short of menacing at times. "We have to start putting a consistent run together now but I know we're capable of beating anyone on our day and the boys will be up for it tomorrow." City continue to be without Tommy Doherty (knee), Kevin Amankwaah (hamstring) and Matthews (ankle), while Joe Burnell withdrew from training yesterday with a groin problem.Wilson has the option of switching the in-form midfielder to the back with Matthew Hill suspended, though Mark Lever is favourite to step in alongside Louis Carey and Danny Coles. Robin Hulbert stands by to step in to Burnell's role if the youngster fails to make the match. Defender Tom Jordan and striker Damian Spencer have been told they won't be getting new contracts with City when their current deals expire in the summer. Spencer has made nine starts and scored City's equaliser in their AWS Wembley final with Stoke two years ago. Jordan, a regular in the club's reserves, has yet to make his senior debut. Wilson said: "It's always hard telling lads this news but we have a wealth of defenders and strikers at the club and I simply couldn't guarantee them places here. But it could prove the start of their careers and we'll certainly be doing what we can to help them on their way." Wilson. meanwhile, has said he doesn't expect to receive a sizeable sum to spend in the transfer market should City reach the final of the LDV Vans Trophy against Blackpool with victory over Cambridge on Tuesday. Progression to the Millennium Stadium would net the club around £500,000.
Planet Football (www.planetfootball.com) Shakers on verge of extinctionBURY have announced they are two weeks away from extinction, as joint chairmen Fred Mason and John Smith claim piling debts and a doomed take-over by Manchester-based ManSport Developments may seal the fate of the 117-year-old club. Both Smith and Mason, who replaced departed chairman Terry Robinson late last month, are asking Shakers fans to support the club by coming to Gigg Lane for the next two league matches against fellow strugglers Cambridge and Bournemouth. Smith told Bury's official website: "We are trapped in a one-way alley with bullets flying all around us. "This isn't scare-mongering, this is the truth. We have two weeks to save The Shakers. "We are asking for local people to rally round because this could be their final chance to watch professional football in this town. "We are currently playing football courtesy of the Professional Footballers Association and people like the Bury Times readers who have contributed to the Save Our Shakers fund."Bury took out a £1 million short-term loan last year to get them through a cash-flow problem before the anticipated take-over of the club this season, but the mortgage company was dissolved after breaking Law Society rules. The proposed take-over by ManSport Developments has failed to bring a replacement mortgage and continuing delays in the take-over plus ManSport's refusal to discuss matters with the club or the press has put their bid in serious doubt. A court hearing early next month could spell the end for the club, as creditors demand repayment on the mortgage, knowing they have a claim on the Gigg Lane ground. The latest developments are more bad news for Bury's directors, who need to try and balance the books whilst averaging 3,500 people through the gates at home matches this season.

Smith said: "We have to generate £250,000 to pay the wages for the next ten weeks and then we need £200,000 to get us through a summer with no income. "Then there is the money we have borrowed from the Professional Footballers Association to find. "A lot of people have made money in this town. Are they prepared to watch the local football club die?" Mason feels the club are improving, but claimed a lack of support could be the final nail in the coffin, telling the club's official website: "The club is a gem if anyone wanted to buy it. "We have a nucleus of good young players, an impressive stadium and we hardly have a massive off-the-field staff bleeding the club. In fact we are down to the bare bones. "People say that this isn't a football town but it is. The problem is that too many of them are going to watch Manchester United, (Manchester) City, Bolton, Blackburn Rovers and even Burnley. "But with no Premiership games this weekend, we will hopefully get the financial lift a big crowd can give us."

Initial talks between the club and Bury Metro Council officials failed to secure any public financial help towards the club's future. Smith added: "A town without a league football club dies. "No one talks about Barrow, Gateshead and Accrington any more and it`s imperative that doesn't happen to Bury. "All we can hope is that people in our town feel the same way." Shakers manager Andy Preece warned that extinction would be a tragedy, just as things were looking brighter on the pitch. He said: "The six players we have signed over the past few days show just what a good thing we have down at Gigg Lane. "But there's no doubt about it, the club is in a very precarious position and cannot survive on the 2,500 fans we get." Meanwhile, Bury continue on with affairs on the pitch as youngster David Borley signed a new two-and-a-half year contract at Gigg Lane. The 18-year-old has improved greatly this season, even keeping skipper Paul Reid out of Shakers boss Andy Preece's line-up. e joins Martyn Forrest, Danny Swailes, and Jamie Stuart, who agreed to deals last week.
