Goram answers
Latics crisis call ANDY
GORAM has returned to Boundary Park after an absence of nearly 15 years
to help solve Athletic’s goalkeeping crisis. Head coach Mick Wadsworth
has turned to Goram after learning that Gary Kelly is unlikely to play
again this season after rupturing ankle ligaments in training. Goram, a
free agent following his recent release by Coventry City, was today due
to sign a contract until the end of the season. Wadsworth believes the
presence of Goram (37), who has been capped 43 times by Scotland, will
be a major influence in the promotion drive. And he explained why he brought
in the player who won six Scottish Premier League titles while at Rangers.
Wadsworth said: “With the batch of games coming up it would have been foolhardy
to go into them with only one goalkeeper. “We have played with only one
in the last few weeks only because we knew David Miskelly was close to
fitness after his shoulder operation. “But after weighing up things I thought
this was the best option. Andy has great experience and is a big player
with a big character and personality. “He is used to playing in major games
and I think he will have a good effect on our back four.” As for Goram,
he is pleased to be back at the club where he kicked off his professional
career. “When I spoke to Andy he told me he would be delighted to come
back to play for us,” explained Athletic chief executive Alan Hardy. Goram
made his debut for Athletic in 1981/82 as an 18-year-old, going on to make
195 league appearances for them before a £325,000 transfer to Hibernian
in 1987. But it was at Rangers where Goram enjoyed the most successful
chapter of his career at a time when they monopolised the honours in Scotland.
Since 1998/99 Goram has had stints at Notts County, Sheffield United, Motherwell,
Manchester United and Coventry City. Goram is likely to make his debut
in Saturday’s home match against Cardiff City which is vital to Athletic’s
play-off prospects. Midfield player Matty Appleby remains a doubt with
a groin injury sustained in last Saturday’s defeat at Wigan. But top scorer
David Eyres has resumed training after a groin strain, also picked up at
the JJB Stadium. Athletic reserves drew 1-1 at Sheffield United last night
with Tony Carss scoring their goal. Scott Vernon, Craig Dudley and Carss
all had great chances to have inflicted defeat on the reserve division
league leaders. Goram’s
sight on play-off spot ANDY
GORAM is pitched straight into Athletic’s promotion play-off battle tomorrow
– determined to pay a debt of gratitude to the club which launched his
career. “It is not a case of going back down Memory Lane as we have a great
chance of making the play-offs,” explained the 37-year-old goalkeeper,
who makes his return in tomorrow’s vital home clash against Cardiff City.
Goram, who has signed a contract until the end of the season, went on:
“I had seven great years at Oldham and they set me on the road to a successful
career. I am hoping this is a way of saying thank you and I am really looking
forward to tomorrow. “As I see it, we need to win five of our remaining
seven league games to stand any chance of making the play-offs, so it is
by no means impossible.” Athletic only learned by chance of Goram’s availability
as they sought cover for Gary Kelly, who ruptured ankle ligaments in training
earlier this week. Goram, who made his Athletic debut in 1981/82, said:
“I was surprised by the way the transfer happened. But when you look at
how I ended up playing for Manchester United last season I suppose nothing
should surprise me.” Goram
will be not the only change tomorrow as Paul Murray is back after suspension
and looks set to reclaim his starting spot. Matty Appleby is the main injury
worry after picking up a groin strain in last Saturday’s defeat at Wigan.
Wadsworth has plenty of options as Murray, Lee Duxbury, Paul Rickers and
Cristian Colusso all failed to win a starting spot last Saturday. The Athletic
chief agrees with Cardiff manager Lennie Lawrence that it is a game neither
team can afford to lose as both are four points adrift of the last play-off
spot. Wadsworth said: “As the weeks go by and we get closer to the wire,
games become even more important. This is a game we need to win if we are
to have any hope of reaching the play-offs. “When you lose at this stage
it becomes harder, as we found to our cost at Wigan with Huddersfield pulling
away from us after winning two games in the past week.” ATHLETIC

margin for error RIVAL
managers Mick Wadsworth and Lennie Lawrence are united in the view that
Saturday’s home league match between Athletic and Cardiff City is one neither
can afford to lose. The promotion prospects of both clubs hang by a thread
as Athletic lie seventh in the table and Cardiff eighth. The pair, who
both have 61 points, are four adrift of Bristol City who occupy the fourth
and final play-off spot. Athletic have also played one more match than
Bristol which means they cannot afford to lose further ground with only
seven matches left to complete. Wadsworth has set a five-win target for
his team which will testing bearing in mind they have to play Cardiff,
Reading, Stoke, Huddersfield, Wycombe and QPR who all have promotion hopes.
“Out of the remaining 21 points available it is vital we pick up at least
15 if we are to give ourselves any chance of featuring in the end-of-season
play offs and extending our season,” explained Wadsworth. It is quite a
challenge bearing in mind the last seven league matches have yielded only
nine points. Athletic’s cause is not being helped by injuries with goalkeeper
Gary Kelly ruled out for the season after rupturing ankle ligaments in
training. John Eyre is recovering from a double hernia operation while
David Reeves and John Sheridan will again sit out tomorrow’s match. And
influential midfield player Matty Appleby is battling to regain fitness
after straining a groin muscle in last Saturday’s defeat at Wigan. Lawrence,
who only succeeded Alan Cork as Cardiff manager five games ago, spelled
out the importance of this clash. “It is an absolute mega game and one
we cannot lose. We can afford one more defeat at most, but definitely not
in this match,” he declared. Cardiff are unbeaten in the five league games
since Lawrence took charge in which they have picked up 11 points. But
there has been disappointment as the two draw were both at home against
QPR and Blackpool. Indeed, they were lucky not to lose last Saturday against
Blackpool after the Seasiders held a two-goal lead. On-loan Andy Campbell
came to the rescue scoring twice to salvage what might turn out to be a
valuable point. Striker Campbell has made quite an impact also scoring
the winner at Northampton and has a return of three goals in three appearances
following his temporary move from Middlesbrough. Lawrence, like Wadsworth,
has injury troubles with possibly 15 professionals missing tomorrow’s match.
They include Rhys Weston, Des Hamilton, Josh Low, Robert Earnshaw, Jason
Bowen, Paul Brayson, Mark Bonner, Gavin Gordon and Leyton Maxwell. But
though Cardiff’s squad will be depleted their side will still include all
their big guns. Costly summer signings Peter Thorne and Graham Kavanagh
- the pair cost combined transfer fees of £2.5million - and former
Manchester City defender Spencer Prior, a £700,000 purchase, will
all feature. Owner Sam Hamman invested heavily in an effort to win back-to-back
promotions though, like Athletic, they might have to wait for another 12
months unless either produces an electrifying finish to the season.

Football Club YOUNG
PLAYERS IDENTITY REVEALED
The player in
question is young defender Fitz Hall who has signed for Latics on a deal
that runs up to the end of the current season and then for another 2 years.
Hall is a product of the famous West Ham youth system and was recommended
to the club by Assistant Manager Iain Dowie's brother who is in charge
of Hall's former club Ryman League outfit Chesham Utd. The 6'3", 20 year
old has also played for Barnet. LATEST
ON FITZ HALL
A press conference
was held at Boundary Park to announce the arrival of the club's latest
signing Fitz Hall, I bet you can't guess his nickname. Well maybe you can,
"One Size" is the answer. Fitz, from, Walthamstow was recommended to Latics
Assistant Manager Iain Dowie by his brother Bob who was Fitz' manager at
Chesham United. The young defender came to Boundary Park for a trial
just before Christmas and impressed enough for the Latics coaching staff
to keep an eye on him. The deal to bring Fitz to the club was concluded
late yesterday (Thursday) and he has signed a contract up to the end of
the 2003/2004 season. The official website can exclusively reveal
that Latics have paid an initial fee of £20,000 for the 21 year old
with a further £10,000 to be paid to the Ryman Premier League club
upon Fitz reaching a certain number of appearances. Fitz began his career
as a schoolboy at West Ham but back then, he wasn't a defender: "I was
a centre forward at West Ham and played alongside Bobby Zamora who is now
at Brighton" he says The move to central defence came when he joined Chesham:
"The coaching staff knew that I was comfortable on the ball and were impressed
when they saw me at the back and they advised me that I had a better prospect
of making it in the game as a defender and so that's what I did." Asked
about joining the Latics, Fitz said: "It's the best feeling ever to get
a pro contract. Everyone's been really nice and very welcoming, now
I've got to get my head down and work to push for a place in the first
team." Latics
Assistant Manager Iain Dowie who first spotted Fitz talent said: "My brother,
Bob, told me about him, so I went down to see him play, I've seen Fitz
on a number of occasions and he is a good player, he has pace, is athletic
and is comfortable on the ball." Iain
hopes that Fitz will soon be competing for a place in the 1st team: "I
have high hopes for him, I can see him being a 1st team regular soon, there
is a little bit of work to do to get his fitness levels up but once that
is done he will be challenging the rest of the lads."
GORAM SIGNATURE
CONFIRMED
The official
Oldham Athletic website is delighted to welcome Andy Goram back to the
club. The Scottish keeper who was capped 44 times for his country has signed
a short term contract that will see him remain at Boundary Park until the
end of this season. We spoke to manager Mick Wadsworth at this afternoon's
press conference to launch Andy's signature about the need to bring in
another keeper following the injury to Gary Kelly. "Well I think that losing
Gary Kelly was a terrible shame because he was playing so well after his
knee problems and now he has done some quite extensive damage to his ligaments
in his ankle. We needed to do something." said Mick. David
Miskelly has figured in a couple of reserve team matches this week but
has been rushed back quickly due to Kelly's injury and there are still
concerns over his recovery:
Mick explains,
"With David Miskelly only just returning from injury himself, we've had
to rush him into two reserve games this week where ideally we would have
liked him just to have trained this week and start his game playing action
next week, so we were in a situation where if anything happened with David
or his recovery hadn't gone as hoped then we could have been embarrassed
by the time the transfer deadline came in a couple of weeks time." Speaking
about bringing Goram back to Boundary Park, Mick said, "We looked at one
or two options but once I gave this some thought, the chance to bring Andy
back to Oldham, I remember him being here obviously at the start of his
career, everyone I talked to thought it was a wonderful idea and opportunity
and I am quite excited about it now." Mick
looks ahead to Saturday's match against Cardiff City. We
spoke to Manager Mick Wadsworth on Thursday afternoon about the forthcoming
match against Cardiff on Saturday. Mick,
looking ahead to Saturday, a tough game against Cardiff ? Yes every
home game in recent weeks, we've said it's a key game, an important game
and obviously with our good home form then the players feel they've a good
chance of winning each game at home. What we need to do certainly, as soon
as possible but most certainly for next season is to turn our away form
into being more consistent and better in terms of the haul of points. Saturday
comes along, Cardiff have still got a chance and I'm sure they'll think
that and we have of getting to the play-offs so it becomes a huge game. The
arrival of Andy Goram who has just come in today is obviously a massive
boost for the club, he's a character with a lot of experience, what sort
of a boost is he to the squad? Well I think that in losing Gary Kelly,
which was a terrible shame because he was playing so well after his knee
problems and now he's done some quite extensive damage to his ligaments
in his ankle, then we needed to do something. Young David Miskelly is just
coming back from a shoulder operation, we've had to rush him into two reserve
games this week where ideally we would have liked him just to train this
week and start his games playing action next week. So we were in a situation
where if anything happened with David or his recovery wasn't as good as
we'd hoped then we could have been embarrassed by the time the transfer
deadline came in a couple of weeks time, so we looked at lots of options
but once I gave this some thought, the chance to bring Andy back to Oldham,
I remember him being here obviously at the start of his career, then everyone
I talked to thought it was a wonderful idea and opportunity and I'm quite
excited about it now. I
know you were disappointed after last Saturday's result at Wigan and I
am sure the lads were but being professionals, I am sure they have bounced
back quickly and you've now got them looking forward to Saturday? The
one thing these players have done is they have generally bounced back from
any disappointment very well since I've been at the club, we've got a good
record of if we've lost a game, we've often gone on a little mini run of
not being beaten for a while and I'd like to think we can now go the remaining
seven games of the league season without being beaten. We need to set out
our stall to do that, we've four home games, three away and we certainly
need to win the home games and see what we can pick up away from home so
it's an exciting time in that sense. As long as we've got life in us and
we've got a chance of the play-offs then we need to keep going before we
even start thinking about next seasons preparations. In
addition to Andy Goram coming into the squad, is there any other squad
news you can give us, obviously Matty Appleby was taken off last week and
has had a lot of treatment this week, what are the chances of Matty making
the game? He'll be assessed again tomorrow (Friday) and we won't make
a decision until tomorrow, I would say at this moment in time that perhaps,
he's 50/50. We do welcome Paul Murray back after his suspension so he'll
be back in the team for this key fixture.
TEAMtalk
(www.teamtalk.co.uk) Appleby
doubt for City clash
Andy Goram goes
straight into the side and Paul Murray returns from suspension for tomorrow's
game with Cardiff, but Matt Appleby is doubtful. The former Scotland and
Rangers keeper signed yesterday until the end of the season after answering
an SOS call to solve The Latics' goalkeeping crisis. Goram, an old Latics
favourite, has been brought in as cover for veteran Gary Kelly who is out
for the season with ruptured ankle ligaments. Oldham have also been boosted
by the return of England B midfielder Murray, who has served his one-match
ban, as they look to continue their promotion push. However, stand-in skipper
Appleby is a doubt with groin and ankle problems and faces a late fitness
test ahead of the game at Boundary Park. Promotion rivals Cardiff are just
one point adrift of The Latics, who are unbeaten in the league at Boundary
Park since Mick Wadsworth took charge back in November. They now have seven
games - four at home - in which to claim a top-six spot, and Wadsworth
admitted: "This is a huge one. "We can't afford to lose any games at our
place if we are to stand any chance and Cardiff will be going all out to
go above us.
"Our home form
has helped get us where we are and there must be no slip-ups now the end
is in sight. "One thing is certain - we are in for a very exciting finish." Oldham
(squad): Goram, Clegg, Beharall, Balmer, Armstrong, Murray, D Sheridan,
Appleby, Baudet, Eyres, Smart, Corazzin, Duxbury, Colusso, Holden, Rickers
and McNiven.
Wadsworth backs
Miskelly
Mick Wadsworth
has insisted that the signing of Andy Goram is no reflection on the ability
of the Latics number two David Miskelly. The Northern Ireland under-21
stopper made his comeback in two reserve team games this week after dislocating
his shoulder in his first, and only, senior outing of the season back in
November.
But Wadsworth
has said the signing of Goram was just to give the youngster more time
to recover. He said: "David did very well although he is a bit ring rusty.
"But we did
rush him back earlier than we wanted to because of the situation we were
in. "Now that Andy is here he will have more time to get himself fit and
his chance will come. It would have been unfair to throw everything at
him at such a crucial stage of the season." On the new signing, Wadsworth
added: "I am delighted to have Andy on board and there aren't many better
keepers in he country. "He has the experience that some players can only
dream about and it will be terrific for some of the younger players at
the club. "When we contacted Andy he was up for it right away, really keen
and eager, everything else was secondary. "We have some really big games
coming up and I must admit I am looking forward to them with some glee."
Latics eye Ostenstad
Latics scouts
were at Ewood Park last night to watch Egil Ostenstad, who has been told
he can quit Blackburn by boss Graham Souness. Oldham are said to be interested
in the Norwegian international but could face opposition from the likes
of Everton, Bolton and Manchester City, who all had their own scouts at
the game.
There has been
little interest shown in the former Southampton striker since Souness said
he could leave Rovers, after failing to reproduce the form he displayed
during his spell on the south coast. However, Ostenstad grabbed a second-half
winner to hand the second string a 2-1 victory against Manchester United
at Gigg Lane.
Colusso's time
to impress Christian
Colusso has just seven games left to convince the Latics coaching staff
that he is worth a permanent deal at Boundary Park. The little midfielder
has scored two goals in five games and was given a run-out in a couple
of reserve team games earlier this week but his loan spell expires at the
end of the season. However, the 24-year-old Argentine was released by Rosario
Central because of economic difficulties facing his homeland club and will
have to put in some spectacular performances if Mick Wadsworth is to pay
the £2million Rosario are asking for. It is almost certain, though,
that The Latics would not meet that asking price but they are still considering
Colusso's future at the club. Injury
doubts for Latics clash
Layton Maxwell,
Scott Young, David Hughes, Jason Bowen and Paul Brayson are all rated as
doubtful for tomorrow's trip to Oldham. Midfielder Maxwell damaged his
calf in Tuesday's FAW Premier Cup win at Wrexham, while Bowen remains a
doubt with his neck injury. Defenders Young and Hughes are both struggling
to be fit but Josh Low is definitely ruled out with a hamstring injury.
Des Hamilton was also injured at the Racecourse Ground and will miss the
rest of the season with a cartilage problem. Strikers Robert Earnshaw and
Gavin Gordon are nursing hamstring problems but took part in light training
yesterday, while Brayson has an ankle knock and is rated 50/50. City and
Oldham are level on 61 points and are both just outside the play-off places
going into the game, although The Bluebirds have a game in hand.
Lawrence said:
"I wouldn't say it was a must win game, but as long as we don't get beaten
it won't be a disaster."
Official
Cardiff City web site (www.cardiffcityfc.co.uk) Oldham
match preview Des
Hamilton will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury. The
former Newcastle midfielder was forced to leave the filed after twisting
his knee during the second half of Cardiff's FAW Premier Cup semi-final
win over Wrexham on Tuesday. He has been troubled by injuries this season
and has made only 23 first team appearances, four of those as substitute.
He was also held back by former manager Alan Cork's belief that he does
not comfortably fit in alongside skipper Graham Kavanagh in midfield. Further
examination on Wednesday discovered severe cartilage damage, which will
force Hamilton to miss Cardiff's promotion push. Since arriving at
Cardiff last summer, Hamilton has suffered a dreadful run of bad luck with
injury, which has prevented him from finding his best form. With Josh Low
also injured in the Wrexham match, manager Lennie Lawrence now faces a
major headache in filling the right wingback role. "It was a good experience
on Tuesday because we had a lot of young professionals playing," said Lawrence.
"But it was costly. Right
wing-back Josh Low also misses tomorrow's vital trip to Oldham with a hamstring
injury, so too does playmaker Jason Bowen who is still sidelined with a
neck problem and Mark Bonner with an ankle injury. Forward Paul Brayson
(ankle) and midfielder Layton Maxwell (calf) are nursing knocks, Maxwell
is rated no better than a 50/50 chance but Brayson should make the squad.
Strikers Robert Earnshaw and Gavin Gordon - both hamstring injuries - are
on the treatment table but both took part in a light training session yesterday.
With the pace
hotting up in the promotion race this is a game the Bluebirds cannot afford
to lose and some would say that if we are to reach the play-offs this is
a must win game. The general feeling is that we need to win five of our
remaining games. City captain Graham Kavanagh said "We must get a result
of some sort and if we can get a win it will put us right back in the picture"
When asked if he thought that if we didn't win against Oldham our season
would basically be over he said " I don't agree, if we were to win five,
draw two and lose one that would give us 78 points. At Stoke we got
to the play-offs in the last two seasons with 74 and 75 points so you would
presume 78 would be enough to get you there"
OLDHAM UPDATE With
Gary Kelly's injury looking set to keep him out for the remainder of the
season and David Miskelly only just returning from his own injury lay-off,
Manager Mick Wadsworth has moved to bring in an experienced keeper as cover,
former Boundary Park favourite Andy Goram was signed in time to play against
the Bluebirds. Goram was asked yesterday if he was keen to play a part
in what could be promotion season and he commented at the press conference
held at Boundary Park, "Well I hope so but I’m coming here on a regular
surface. I don’t think I’m bigger than anybody else, if I don’t play well-
if I have bad games then I don’t expect to play. But at the same time it
would be great if I could give something back these seven games as a thank
you for setting me on my way all those years ago. It would be fine if we
could get into the play-offs and then it is anybody’s game to get promoted"
Influential midfielder and player coach John Sheridan underwent an operation
to clear out debris in his right knee on Monday and has now been advised
to rest the knee. It is expected that John will be out of action for a
further couple of week's which is a massive blow to the squad as they challenge
for a play-off place with a number of tough, important games still to come.
Matty Appleby who has captained the side in recent weeks is scheduled to
have a fitness test on Friday morning on the groin strain he picked up
in last week's game at Wigan before a decision is made on his availability
for the Cardiff match.
Western
Mail (http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/0600soccer/0900cardiffcity/) Lennie
facing anxious wait
LENNIE Lawrence
spent this morning assessing the injury situation at Ninian Park with 14
players in the treatment room. Rhys Weston, Des Hamilton, Josh Low, Jason
Bowen, Paul Brayson, Mark Bonner, Scott Young and Layton Maxwell are among
those battling to be fit for the Second Division match at Oldham Athletic
on Saturday. Bluebirds manager Lawrence is hoping at least some of those
having treatment are ready for the match at Boundary Park, Oldham. If all
14 were ruled out, City would be left with only 15 fit senior players including
two goalkeepers, inexperienced Martyn Giles, James Collins and Gethin Jones
plus transfer-listed Kevin Evans. City's
injury list reads: Rhys Weston (concussion), Des Hamilton (knee), Josh
Low (hamstring), Robert Earnshaw (hamstring), Jason Bowen (neck), Paul
Brayson (ankle), Mark Bonner (ankle), David Hughes (hamstring), Andrew
Jordan (knee), Scott Young (groin), Gavin Gordon (hamstring), Lee Kendall
(cartilage), Layton Maxwell (calf), Kurt Nogan (Achilles).
Must-not-lose
situation for the Bluebirds
CARDIFF CITY
manager Lennie Lawrence has warned his Bluebirds they must win five of
their last eight matches to stand a chance of making the play-offs in May.
Lawrence re-assessed the task ahead of City after Huddersfield's last-gasp
4-2 victory at Wycombe on Tuesday moved the Terriers up into fifth spot.
And realist Lawrence said Saturday's trip to Boundary Park, where City
face play-off chasing rivals Oldham Athletic, is a "must-not lose" affair.
"Huddersfield winning at Wycombe was a big blow for us," he said. "It's
made our task even harder. "We've got eight games left and I think we've
got to win five of them. "Huddersfield's victory has put another win on
us. That result was a sickener, especially as they scored two goals in
the 90th minute." That result at Wycombe ruined City's dressing room celebrations
after the FAW Premier Cup semi-final shoot-out win over Wrexham at The
Racecourse. "I wouldn't say Oldham is a now a must-win game but it's a
match we mustn't lose," said Lawrence. "I'm still optimistic. Reaching
the play-offs is still very much in our hands. "If we don't beat Oldham
we're not out of it because Bristol City and Huddersfield could easily
drop out of the top six." City still have to travel to Huddersfield on
April 9 - a fixture that should have been played last month but was called
off because of a waterlogged pitch - but most of their remaining fixtures
are against teams in the bottom half of the table. But Lawrence has several
injury worries with Des Hamilton, Layton Maxwell, Josh Low and striker
Paul Brayson all hurt at Wrexham. Three of City's last eight games are
at Ninian Park (against Wrexham, Port Vale and Notts County) with the other
five on the road (against Oldham, Chesterfield, Colchester, Huddersfield
and Tranmere).
