Oldham Evening Chronicle (www.oldham-chronicle.co.uk) Appleby lined up for instant debut NEW signing Matt Appleby is being lined up for an instant debut tonight when Athletic play a must-win match against Swindon. Appleby, signed on loan from Barnsley yesterday, has been pitched straight into the squad by boss Mick Wadsworth. Athletic have lost three games on the bounce – conceding 11 goals in the process – and they hope Appleby will be a trouble-shooter. As the 29-year-old can play midfield, centre-half or right-back, several team-mates are under immediate pressure for their places. Appleby has signed for a month, but Athletic already have plans to make the deal permanent if he does well. The former Newcastle and Darlington man, who is out of favour at Oakwell, has played around 250 league games, scoring 15 goals. Athletic have several options for tonight’s match at Boundary Park (7.45 kick off), which is a rearranged fixture from earlier this month. Darren Sheridan is the only absentee from their loss at Chesterfield on Saturday, his ankle injury – plus an imminent ban – meaning he misses at least seven games. Appleby could be a straight replacement in midfield, although Sheridan’s brother John may be promoted from the bench. On-loan Dean Holden, who has become the regular right-back, also looks vulnerable after Appleby’s arrival. ATHLETIC (from): Rachubka, Holden, Balmer, Beharall, Armstrong, Duxbury, Murray, Eyres, Reeves, Smart, Appleby, J Sheridan, McNiven, Baudet, Tipton, Eyre, Kelly. Swindon are in a period of transition as ex-Liverpool boss Roy Evans resigned as manager before Christmas. Evans quit because the new board, headed by former jockey Willie Carson, couldn’t guarantee him transfer funds. Andy King was reinstated less than five months after getting the boot, but Swindon are languishing in 18th. They are without tough centre-back Neil Ruddock (knee injury), although the dangerous Danny Invincible should play after a £200,000 bid from Blackpool was turned down. SWINDON (from): Griemink, Willis, Heywood, Reeves, Invincible, Duke, S Robinson, McAreavey, Davis, Foley, Sabin, Gurney, Howe, Williams, Young, McKinney, M Robinson, Edwards. Athletic’s home league match with Tranmere, which was postponed on January 1, will now be played on Tuesday, February 19.
Official Oldham Athletic Web Site (www.oldhamathletic.co.uk)Content from the Oldham Athletic Web Site is used with permission of Oldham Athletic Football Club Mick talks about Swindon He was not best pleased on Saturday after the Latics had given away a two goal lead at Chesterfield.  On Sunday he held a meeting with the players to discuss the defeat and he was more upbeat about the forthcoming game. The Official Website spoke with Mick before tonight's crucial encounter with Swindon: What angered you most about Saturday's defeat?
I don't think anger is the right word, disappointment because it was just a very poor second half performance.  Having put ourselves into a winning position, we didn't show the ruthlessness and professionalism necessary to run out as winners.  That is something we are quite capable of doing because we done it on more than one occasion since I've been at the club.  The players will learn from it, that is the most important thing and I am more than confident that over the long term we'll be fine and have some fun over the next few years. What was your opinion on the injury to Darren Sheridan?
It was an injury, he's got a bad ankle, it will keep him out for a few weeks but that coincides with his suspension.  He had a very bad week last week did Darren and he has to get over that and put some big performances in when he gets back. Matty Appleby has arrived from Barnsley, What can you tell us about him?
Very talented, very experienced, still only 29 years old, big part of Barnsley's success in the last few years.  He's a utility player, in the sense he can play midfield, sweeper, centre half or right back.  He can be very useful for us and hopefully for more than just a loan period. Swindon are having a few problems both on and off the field, Have you any thoughts on them?
Well I don't know a deal about them, I know the way they play and I know their manager Andy King very well, he's a good friend of mine.  I know they're fighting for their lives and a new take-over will mean there will be optimism within the club.  Willie Carson has taken over as Chairman and they will be positive and difficult to beat.  It's a game we need to and should win. Two home games on the trot, Are you looking for six points?
I am looking for three points on Wednesday.
Lights, Camera, Action!!!

Boundary Park has been more like a film set this week than a football ground as four TV companies have been filming for one thing or another. ITV Sport Channel has been here all week filming because the Oldham v Wrexham game is the highlighted featured match on the ITV Sport Channel on Sunday.  They have been following training and other activities going on this week. MUTV dropped in yesterday to interview Paul Rachubka about his loan spell at Boundary Park.  Paul was reluctant to be interviewed but like a true pro, he gave a great performance.  Granada TV have also been here filming for their Sunday Supplement programme. Finally, Children's BBC have also been here following Alex Carter of 'Hollyoaks' fame.  Alex used to help run the scoreboard on a matchday and is a big Latics fan.

TEAMtalk (www.teamtalk.co.uk) Brother battle for Reeves
New boy David Reeves had a special reason for looking forward to tonight's game against Swindon - his twin brother Alan plays for The Robins. And the two will come into direct contact as David is a striker while Alan - who is 10 minutes younger - is a centre-half. The pair came up against each other earlier in the season when David was a Chesterfield player... and he scored. He said: "There is always plenty of rivalry between us on the pitch but we are best friends off it." Reeves was promoted with The Spireites last season and he is hoping to get the goals which will help send The Latics back into the First Division. The 34-year-old, who has already scored three goals in four games since he switched to Boundary Park, said: "It would be great to go up again. "There is a good mix of youth and experience here and I think we have a good chance of achieving it. "I last played in Division One nine years ago and it would be brilliant to do it again."
The Latics are forced to make at least one change from the side which was beaten 4-2 at Chesterfield on Saturday. Midfielder Darren Sheridan has ankle ligament damage which will keep him out for around six weeks. But boss Mick Wadsworth brought in Barnsley's Matty Appleby on a month's loan earlier this week and the 29-year-old has been named in the squad. He has only had a couple of training sessions with his new colleagues and may have to settle for a place on the bench. Gary Kelly is still struggling with a knee injury and Paul Rachubka, on loan from Manchester United, will again deputise in goal. Wadsworth brought the players in for Sunday training following Saturday's humiliating debacle at Saltergate. He said: "We must make sure there are no more slip ups."
The squad was: Rachubka, Holden, Beharall, Balmer, Armstrong, Murray, Duxbury, Sheridan J, Eyres, Smart, Reeves, Appleby, McNiven, Tipton, Eyre, Baudet and Kelly.

Hotte completes Conference switch Mark Hotte has joined struggling Conference side Scarborough for the rest of the season on a free transfer. The 23-year-old defender was a first-team regular last season but the arrival of new players such as Stuart Balmer, Chris Armstrong and loan duo Dean Holden and David Beharall left him out in the cold. Bradford-born Hotte has not figured in the league during the current campaign though he made a couple of appearances on the bench in the Worthington Cup. He arrived at Boundary Park as a 14-year-old and after making his debut in 1999 he played 74 games for The Latics. Hotte has signed on for Scarborough until the end of the season. He was contracted at Boundary Park until the summer of 2003 but after talks about his future it was decided to cancel the agreement by mutual consent.

Latics' support for Shaun
Injury-victim Shaun Garnett has been assured of The Latics' support in his recovery from a knee problem - even after his contract expires. The 32-year-old's centre-back's current deal ends in the summer but he is expected to be out for at least a year after suffering cruciate ligament damage in September. But The Latics will help him in his recovery and Mick Wadsworth has said he wants to keep the big defender at Boundary Park until he finds a new club. And after almost 200 appearances for The Latics, Oldham could support the former Tranmere man after his loyal service.
New date for Rovers clash The game against Tranmere, which had to be called off on New Year's Day, has been rescheduled for next month. It will now be played at Boundary Park on Tuesday, February 19, with a 7.45pm kick-off. But it has meant that another fixture has had to be called off. The Latics reserves were due to host Preston North End's second-string side on that night and a new date has yet to be organised.

Swindon Evening Advertiser (www.thisisswindon.co.uk) King’s plan of attack

Andy King could be set to go all-out-attack at Oldham tonight. The Town boss is contemplating a change of formation ahead of the trip to Boundary Park after Sunday’s disappointing derby defeat to Bristol City. “I’m going to Oldham with a view to win the game,” said King. “Gurney and Howe are back in the squad, and that gives me options. “I may retain the system we played on Saturday as I was particularly impressed with young Sol Davis. “I might revert to a flat back four, or with Dominic Foley on board, we may go for three up front. The options are there to consider. “Oldham are a decent side and they have improved under Mick Wadsworth who I know is a very good coach from his time at Newcastle and Southampton. “But make no mistake, we intend to win the game, and we’ll use the most attacking formation we can to do so.” The return of Bobby Howe and Andy Gurney may free up Danny Invincible for a more advanced role. Alternatively, Guiliano Grazioli may be recalled to the starting line up to form a three-pronged attack with Eric Sabin and new-boy Dominic Foley. Attack may prove the best form of defence against an Oldham side that have lost their last two outings 5-2 and 4-2 against Blackpool and Chesterfield respectively. Neil Ruddock, available after suspension, misses the trip because of a knee injury while Paul Edwards is still nursing a groin injury. King travelled to Bury last night to watch the Shakers take on Huddersfield Town’s opponents on February 5.

Official Swindon Town Web Site (www.swindontownfc.co.uk) ANDY WANTS A WIN

Town don't take any fresh injuries into the game, and Andy King welcomes the return of defender Andy Gurney and midfielder Bobby Howe from suspension. King said: "I haven't decided yet on what formation I will go with, I don't think it will be a surprise to anyone if I brought Andy Gunrey back. Previous to my return I heard reports he was very good, and on my return, he has been a strong link at the back. I feel we missed his character and strength on Sunday, it does depend on what system I go with." Whatever formation the team play, King will want his men to go for three points. He said: "I will choose the system that I believe will beat Oldham, because we need to win that game. The quicker we get to 45 points, which I think is a safety margin, then the quicker we can relax and look at what is happening. I don't want to be doing that on the last day of the season." Swindon are currently 18th in the table, and King was disappointed that the result against City didn't push them to mid-table safety. He said: "I know the position we stand in 18th looks dangerous or could be dangerous, with a string of bad results, so I want to win games sooner rather than later. "Bristol City would have been the platform, it was very important to me. Certain games at certain times go in your favour and then you have to re-adjust your thoughts afterwards, we had it last year when it went in our favour." Alan Young had a great impact on the game, but 15 minutes won't guarantee a start for the 18-year old. King added: "Alan isn't starting because of the physical pressure and demands in this division will hurt the kid, and I'm not prepared to hurt him and secondly he's been out for so long, he's not been involved since I've been away. "He will be involved, he'll be sub, but I can't start him from the off. 90 minutes is a long time for a young boy, with his physique."
