Game of Two Halves Latics
luck continued to desert them today at London Road as Peterborough grabbed
a share of the spoils despite Latics going in ahead at half time. First
half goals from Murray and Smart were cancelled out by a dodgy opener by
the home side and a second half Neale Fenn strike to level it. This was,
as the title suggests, a game very much of two halves. The 1st half was
all Latics and only a one goal lead did not justify the display. The 2nd
half was much different and the blues were lucky not to lose. The
London Road pitch wasn't so good. Barry Fry describes it as the worst pitch
in the country. Mick Wadsworth showed his tactical awareness by changing
Latics system to suit the pitch. The middle of the pitch was like a mud
heap, but the two wings were pretty good, with lots of grass. Mick switched
from 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2 system, using the wings as much as possible. It would
have been pointless playing three central midfielders, as he has been,
on a pitch where passing was hard to do. Carlo
Corazzin replaced Cristian Colusso in the team. Allan Smart moved on to
the right wing in the 4-4-2 formation and David Eyres on the left. This
left Corazzin and Reeves to play as the two strikers. Latics were missing
David Beharall, Lee Duxbury, Tony Carss, Wayne Gill and Lee Duxbury. New
signing Michael Clegg was on the bench and Scott McNiven rightfully retained
his place after an impressive display against Tranmere. Argentinean Cristian
Colusso dropped to the bench despite scoring in midweek and Paul Rachubka
continued in goal. This was the last game of his three month loan spell. FIRST
HALF The
game started off fast and furious. Carlo Corazzin had the first shot at
goal. He shot from 30 yards, but the ball flew over. Good play though from
Corazzin and any shot from distance would surely test Tyler with the strong
wind. Howard Forinton had Peterborough's first effort at goal, which went
just wide. I didn't see a deflection, but a corner was given. The corner
came in and Rachubka seemed to have the ball in his hands, before Forinton
headed the ball home. It looked to me to be a foul, and Rachubka ran after
the referee, but a goal was given. I'd have to watch a replay to confirm.
Latics now started to play some really neat stuff. Matty Appleby played
a ball down the right side, which David Reeves collected. He laid the ball
back to Allan Smart, who's cross nearly reached Carlo Corazzin's head,
but fell to Paul Murray who slotted the ball home from 5 yards. An easy
finish, but a great move. On 15 minutes Latics went ahead. Paul Murray
played a ball in behind the Peterborough defence, and Allan Smart lobbed
the ball over Tyler. A superb finish and another superb move. (1-2) Latics
were really moving now and right on top. Latics almost made it three on
23 minutes, when David Eyres swung in a corner. Carlo Corazzin was first
to the ball, and headed only inches wide. Tyler was stranded. Near the
end of the half, David Reeves was fouled 25 yards out. David Eyres stepped
up, and hit the ball just past Tyler's left hand post. It looked in to
me at first. Allan Smart was down for a few minutes, after taking a knock
to the nose, but half-time and Latics got applauded off. Peterborough
brought on Danielsson for Richard Forsyth at half-time, and they went onto
the attack. Straight from the kick-off it was all Peterborough. Jimmy Bullard
was playing particularly well. He had an effort from a Tom Williams corner.
They tried an Eyres - Appleby Brighton special, but it flew well over.
Bullard again had an effort from distance which went only a yard past the
post. Rachubka was worried and made a massive dive at the ball. Bullard
again was involved when he fed substitute Francis Green. He ran through
one on one with Rachubka but, as he's done so many times, made a superb
save. Peterborough's pressure finally brought a goal on 64 minutes, when
Neal Fenn scored. A corner was taken quickly and headed out. It was pumped
back into the box. The Latics players looked for offside, but Corazzin
was playing Fenn on, and he couldn't miss from 8 yards. Paul Rickers was
just about to come on before the goal, but was told to sit back down. Latics
now started to play a bit more. Peterborough were still looking dangerous
but Latics looked like they could grab a goal. Latics did though bring
on Cristain Colusso and Michael Clegg for Allan Smart and Carlo Corazzin
on 76 minutes. On
79 minutes, Julien Baudet had a superb chance to win the game. A corner
was headed out and Chris Armstrong put a second cross in. It fell to Baudet
8 yards out, but he somehow hit it over the bar. This was a chance he should
have buried. Chris Armstrong did a 40 yard run, and shot from 30 yards.
The ball flew only inches over the bar. What a player Armstrong is. The
final action of the game came with a few minutes left. Peterborough got
a free-kick 25 yards out, and the impressive Bullard smacked the bar. A
let-off. Matty Appleby was booked late on for mouthing off. Paul Murray
had earlier been booked for a challenge, which was never a yellow card.
So in the end Latics only got a draw. At the end of the first half, I felt
like we could win 4 or 5-1, but by the end of the second I was happy to
come away undefeated. We could easily have been beaten. The wind played
a major factor on this game. Whoever played downwind had a major advantage
and scoring into the wind was going to be an achievement or even a fluke.
Like Peterborough's first goal was. It
was quite ironic that Allan Smart scored his first league goal for the
club and he was playing in midfield. He played quite well, getting an assist
for the first goal with a superb cross and a superb finish for the second.
David Reeves seems to be the man everyone likes to hate. In fact many of
the players playing yesterday seem to be hated. I found it very funny before
the game that Allan Smart, David Reeves, Dean Holden, Paul Rickers and
Scott McNiven all got booed when the teams were being read out. We're 7th
in the league and 5 out of the 16 on duty we're booed. Fickle. Never. It's
seems to me Latics fans need a scapegoat, and now Mark Allott's gone David
Reeves is the man. Seems very childish to me. I though Reeves actually
had a good first half. His best since Blackpool. 2nd half he was poor,
but then again it's one hell of a hard job trying to hold the ball up in
that wind. Chris Armstrong was the best man once again. He was Latics best
attacking threat in the 2nd half. He, along with Scott McNiven, Julien
Baudet and Stuart Balmer all played pretty well. Scott McNiven made David
Farrell come inside onto his weaker right-foot so many times. Very good
defending and McNiven got a lot of undue stick. I had no complaints from
his performance. When Clegg came on and gave him some support he was much
better. Allan Smart, despite playing well on the wing, didn't give McNiven
enough options ahead of him. This wasn't an ideal result with Brentford
and Huddersfield winning, (jammy sods, both last minute winners) but Latics
lie only four points behind Stoke and they still need to visit Boundary
Park. Tuesday's game is a massive one. Hopefully Paul Rachubka will have
been signed up, but if not Gary Kelly will play. Encouragingly he was out
at half time, running about and kicking, so looks fit again. If Chubbs
isn't signed up, thanks Chubbs. A win is pretty much a must over Brentford.Boundary

continued their poor league form with their third successive draw on their
home turf. This was a truly dull match and will have done very little to
inspire quite a few of the sparse attendance to come back for the crucial
relegation battle with Notts County. Only rumours and gossip around the
terraces brightened the afternoon for many and whether or not we have seen
Wayne Turner’s last match as Head Posh Whistler remains to be seen, an
ever dwindling amount of Posh fans can barely be bothered to express any
concern. Once
again Leon McKenzie was out of the game. His Mum had put "bad ankle" on
the letter to Mr Fry this week but we all know it will only be a matter
of days before the truancy officer comes a-calling. Neale Fenn was restored
to the starting line up to partner Howard Forinton. Clearly pace wasn’t
going to feature highly in Posh’s forward play and it didn’t. Daniel French
made a rare start and Matthew Gill was rushed back from injury as Marc
Joseph moved into his natural centre back berth to replace the injured
Simon Rea. Someone suggested to me that this line up would provide more
balance than in previous weeks but it is rather unfortunate to report that
French looked somewhat out of his depth. Gill, with barely a fortnight’s
worth of match fitness, spent most of the game treading water and playing
on memory. The
game started with all the life of Prince Charlie’s Aunt. Only Andy Edwards
ducking out of a header to provide space for Carlo Corazzin - who was destined
to maintain his Posh duck - to shoot over enlivened the first ten minutes
until Forinton shot wide from a Fenn lay off. From the resulting corner,
Paul Rachubka grasped the ball, fumbled it and Forinton leapt in to head
it into the net to open the scoring. Posh’s lead was extremely short lived
as Allan Smart broke free of both Tom Williams and David Farrell on the
right. He crossed low and nobody picked up the well-timed run of Paul Murray
who tapped the ball past Mark Tyler with ease. So much for all this defensive
work, then. On
15 minutes, matters became much worse for the home team. Murray turned
in midfield and dropped a well-judged lob behind Joseph for Smart to race
onto from the right wing. He struck the ball on the volley and it looped
over the advancing Tyler and bounced into the goal. An air of resignation
enveloped the ground. We’ve seen it all before and no doubt some of us
will see it all again but this awful ball watching habit is now endangering
our Second Division status. Fenn
presented Rachubka with an easy catch to enable the young keeper to regain
his confidence and on 17 minutes, Gill was booked for a rash challenge
on the well travelled David Reeves after being sold a hospital pass by
the jittery Edwards. The game meandered on with barely a highlight and
I started to wish I had bought my Innovations catalogue with me. Fenn gave
Rachubka more handling practice, David Eyres curled free kick just wide
and Fenn was too slow to reach a Farrell cross. Oldham were controlling
the game and seemed happy with their lead. Posh, on the other hand, seemed
bereft of confidence. Long balls were being hit towards Fenn and Forinton
with the inevitable consequence of the Oldham defenders heading the ball
back and neither Posh winger seemed to have the capability or inclination,
depending on which one you chose, to get to grips with the game. On
37 minutes, Forinton did his best to brighten proceedings when he headed
a Farrell cross over under pressure from Julian Baudet. The big Oldham
defender then directed a header wide at the other end of the pitch from
a corner and as the game entered stoppage time, Fenn blasted wide from
distance. The Half Time whistle was met with a ripple of boos from those
who still give a monkeys and I made way to the London Road Enclosure Bogs.
Guess what? They are still out of order! Does anything ever get done at
London Road or is that a stupid question? The
gossip at half time was of far greater interest than the football but that
isn’t saying much really. It seems that Monday will be quite an eventful
day at London Road but it is well known that Chinese Whispers can become
all the more exaggerated when circulated among the bored and mischievous. Richard
Forsyth pulled out at half time and was replaced by Helgi Danielsson who
one would hope would spend his appearance money on trip to the barbers.
He has at last shaved off that ridiculous chinstrap beard though. Posh
looked much the livelier team but a lack of pace, the ability to jump and
little understanding between Fenn and Forinton saw Posh’s ponderous approach
play crash against the rocks of the Oldham defence. Jimmy Bullard chipped
over from a French free kick and on 55 minutes Francis Green replaced the
22-year-old youngster (just how old do you have to be before you cease
to be a youngster?). Some of the crowd voiced their derision but it was
hard to see what they were getting worked up about. Forinton
laid the ball of for Danielsson who placed a ball to his left for Bullard
to shoot narrowly wide. Fenn started to show signs of his early season
form and he placed a fine pass to the left wing for Green to turn onto
and run towards the heart of the penalty area. Green reached a dead end
thanks to not looking up and prodded the ball back for Bullard. The midfielder
hit a rising shot that Rachubka palmed over and on 64 minutes, a Bullard
corner was played short to Williams on the left wing. The full back hit
a low hard shot (or was it a pass?) which Fenn intercepted, controlled
and poked past the diving Rachubka into the Oldham net. Some of us cheered,
others smiled and a few mumbled "Oh look. A goal." Posh
pushed for a winner and it fell to Forinton to waste Posh’s best chance.
Fenn put him clean through on the right of the penalty area but he snatched
at his shot and Rachubka claimed the ball with ease. Oldham got bored with
defending Posh’s powder puff threat and Smart centred low and hard for
Baudet to fire over under pressure from Joseph. Bullard provided a rare
moment of genuine excitement with an 80th minute free kick which made the
cross bar wobble in the key of F and with the game about to enter added
time, Green contrived top clear another fine Fenn pass on behalf of the
Oldham defence. The
added time featured more highlights than many were expecting and were arguably
out of character with the stupifyingly dull 90 minutes which preceded them.
Matty Appleby was booked for dissent after fouling Williams and the ball
was bought forward ten fairy steps by Mr Warren. Bullard arched his kick
over the wall but Rachubka once again caught with nonchalance. Michael
Clegg crossed low and hard after being granted the freedom of the right
wing from a foul throw but Reeves smashed his shot wide. With the last
acts of the game, the hard working but ill-composed Forinton was bundled
wide with the ball after a fine Farrell cross and Danielsson nod down.
The fat striker made a little too much of his vain appeals for a penalty
and probably spent all of his flagging energy store because he could only
tamely head Williams right wing corner wide at the far post. The
final whistle was met with silence. I cannot recall the last time this
has happened at London Road and although this sounds daft, it was a loud
and clear indication of many people’s apathy about Posh and their self-imposed
relegation battle. A further sign of the Posh public’s waning interest
was illustrated by the almost non-existent queue for the Bournemouth tickets.
People just couldn’t wait to get home. Enthusiasm has now all but left
the Posh building. Whether Monday’s news – assuming it is not scurrilous
rumour-mongering by the increasingly disaffected – will awaken the fans’
ardour is an intriguing question but I can hardly be arsed to contemplate
it myself.

Latics' Chief
Executive Alan Hardy revealed exclusively to the Official Website on Sunday
that a transfer fee has been agreed with Manchester United to bring Paul
Rachubka to Boundary Park on a permanent deal. Mr Hardy said, "I am pleased
to confirm that following discussions with Paul Kenyon, the Chief Executive
at Old Trafford, that both clubs have agreed on the amount of transfer
fee involved. However having spoken with the player and his agent over
the past 4 days we are some way off agreeing personal terms with the player.
In view of the deadline for permanent signings being 12 noon on Monday
for the player to be eligible for Tuesday nights game, it looks like that
deadline will be missed. We are hopeful of completing the signing in the
next few days". Any further moved regarding Rachubka's move to the Latics
will be available here, first on the official website. Match
report
Latics travel
down the A1 to a sunny but bitingly cold London Road ground. The ‘pitch’
looks more brown than green as the Posh kick off. Posh’s starting formation
is of a standard 4 – 4- 2 configuration whereas the Latics are looking
to push forward with Corazzin, Reeves and recently signed Scotman Allan
Smart. Both sides make a lively start with Corazzin firing just over the
bar from a long Rachubka clearance just a few minutes in. This is countered
minutes later with the lively David Farrell making a charge on the left
hand side. However a poor shot to goal let's him down. Then a free
kick from Posh number 4 Marc Joseph is met by the advancing Howard Forinton
who makes a shot. This is deflected and creeps just wide of the woodwork.
The resulting corner is quickly taken and is met by Forinton who this time
makes no mistake and shoots past Rachubka for 1 – 0. Posh
possession does not continue for long as a period of neat play on the right
hand side and good through ball leaves Paul Murray with a clear chance
on goal. Murray makes no mistake and hammers the ball home past the helpless
‘keeper Tyler to make it 1 – 1 on 11 minutes. Oldham pressure continues
and following some good play in midfield Paul Murray combines well with
Allan Smart who finds some space to execute a well placed lob which finds
the back of the net. 2-1 and 15 minutes gone. The army of Latics fans who
have made the trip South increase in volume as David Reeves is fouled by
Posh left back Tom Williams just outside the area. It is quickly taken
by the Latics forward although is easily gathered by the Posh ‘keeper.
22 minutes in and Athletic continue to push forward, winning a corner which
is taken by Stuart Balmer on the right hand side. It swings in for the
advancing Corazzin although just clears the Peterborough right hand post. A
good spell for Posh on 25 minutes and some impressive play on the left
hand side is met by big forward Neale Fenn on the edge of the box. He manages
to get a shot on goal but it is well saved by Rachubka who gets well down
to his right. Posh pressure does not continue for long as some good work
by Eyes linking up well with David Reeves on the right hand side lifts
the Latics team and they continue to push forward with Corrazin chasing
every ball. Chris Armstrong and Posh’s Dan French dual on the left hand
side on 35 minutes. The impressive Armstrong wins out and defends well
for Latics to continue their quest for the points. Alan Smart, who has
shown some impressive touches, goes down a few minutes later after a rash
challenge by Posh’s Tom Williams just inside the Peterborough half. He
stays down for a while although completes the first half to witness more
Latics pressure and the blues go for half time with their heads up. HALF
TIME Peterborough 1 Latics 2 News
is that Danielsson starts the second half for Forsyth as Peterborough emerge
with renewed confidence especially with the zippy Farrell on the right
hand side. Posh pressure continues with a Tom Williams inswinger which
is met by Jimmy Bullard on the outside of the area. However he fires high
and wide and the Latics regain possession. Some good play in the midfield
by Matty Appleby moves the play towards the Posh goal although a period
of good and sustained pressure- notably from the Frenchman Julien Baudet
and ever-present Appleby- the move ends with a Posh goal kick. Jimmy Bullard
gets frustrated with Appleby in the middle of the field and brings him
down to earth with a strong challenge. However after this period of sustained
pressure Posh fight back with a low and hard piledriver which just clears
Rachubka’s right hand post. That man Bullard again with a stinging strike.
Posh pressure continues with quick number 14 Green linking well with Bullard
to fire a shot toward goal, only for super ‘keeper Rachubka to make a fantastic
save. Farrell continues on the left hand side and start to frustrate the
Latics. David
Reeves shows energy in midfield as he chases play, although just loses
out to the oncoming posh forward- who pushes onward to shoot at the
Latics goal. This is deflected for the corner- which is quickly taken.
It bobbles about in the box before Neale Fenn shoots and scores to give
the Latics keeper no chance and bring the game level. It’s all on the left
hand side as Bullard and Williams continue a strong partnership. They deliver
some good crosses, which hover dangerously in the goalmouth but are never
converted much to the Latics relief. Reeves and Corazzin combine on the
right hand side on 77 minutes. This results in a Latics corner, an inswinger
which unfortunately fails to trouble the Posh keeper. On 79 minutes Baudet
fires just over the bar from a good Chris Armstrong cross and the Latics
seem to have found some form and movement once more. Clegg and Colusso
are brought on for Corazzin and the injured Smart and the Latics continue
on. However
Peterborough dominance continues as with ten minutes of normal time left,
that tricky number 16 Bullard fires a free kick over the Latics wall and
against the woodwork as Oldham fans breathe a sigh of relief. Skillfull
Armstrong hits back though and constructs some good movement down the left
hand side, all to no avail however as the final whistle blows and in truth,
the Latics have been fortunate to stay level. After a promising Latics
first half, Posh retained much of the possession after the break. They
know how to deal with an unpredictable and muddy pitch and how to make
the most of ever-advancing danger man Bullard. Chris Armstrong put an impressive
performance together on the left in difficult conditions. Allan Smart and
Matty Appleby played some good football. Latics earned a point away from
home but to continue with their quest for promotion, they know next time
that they must make it three.
TEAMtalk
(www.teamtalk.co.uk) Wadsworth
remains positive
Mick Wadsworth
remained upbeat despite The Latics dropping two points at lowly Peterborough
United, to leave them without a win in three matches. The boss was unhappy
at the two goals Paul Rachubka let in, but praised the goalkeeper for a
string of fine saves that helped The Latics to their single point. "I thought
their first goal was a foul on the keeper, for sure," said Wadsworth. "He
had the ball in his hands, but the referee said it was a goal and you have
to put up with that sort of thing. "The second goal was a very poor one
to concede, but Paul made a marvellous save in the first half and his handling
was very good in the second half." Paul Murray and Allan Smart scored within
four minutes of each other after Wadsworth's side had gone a goal down,
setting each other up to give The Latics a 2-1 lead at the break. But Wadsworth
admitted: "I have to say I'm not happy with some of the players. "I felt
we should have done a lot better to get the ball up the pitch in the second
half, but it was a terrible pitch to play on and very difficult to play
passing football." Wadsworth's troops are now four points adrift of the
last play-off place and they face a tough game against Brentford on Tuesday.
"We've got to beat them," he added. "It's a very important match for us."
Fry praises returning
Gill
Barry Fry heaped
praise on Matthew Gill for a superb performance in his first game in almost
a year as Posh drew 2-2 at home against Oldham. The 21-year-old completed
the full 90 minutes in his first appearance for the club since March 6,
and Fry admitted the midfielder played extremely well. "I said to Gilly
before the game that even if he scored two own goals, he wouldn't get any
moans from me because I'm so glad to have him back," said Fry. "I was absolutely
thrilled to see him. There were times when he thought his career might
be over, but he's come through it superbly." And Fry defended his decision
to substitute Daniel French - making his first start since last April -
after a chorus of boos greeted his decision. "Daniel didn't really look
too comfortable in the first half, but I thought when I switched things
around and brought on a third forward, we looked a much better side. "We
scored the equaliser shortly after that and I thought we could have had
a winner when Neale Fenn put Howard Forinton through, but the goalkeeper
saved it with his legs and then Jimmy Bullard hit the underside of the
crossbar. "We matched them and could have beaten them." Posh are now without
a win in nine games and have drawn their last three matches at London Road.
But the boss added: "I think if ever there was a side that deserved a bit
of luck and deserved a win, it's us. "We're very nervous and lacking in
confidence but I was pleased with the way the lads reacted in the second
half. "I don't care about the performances any more - all I care about
is the results."
Sporting
Life Saturday review (www.sportinglife.com) CURETON
FIRES ROYALS CLEAR
Jamie Cureton
came up with the goal that took Reading four points clear at the
top of Nationwide League Division Two. Cureton's 52nd-minute winner settled
a tight game at home to promotion-chasing Stoke, for whom Siarhei
Shtaniuk was sent off for a second yellow card just after the hour.
Peter Taylor's
second-placed Brighton were surprisingly held to a goalless draw
at home to struggling Wrexham.
But Brentford
moved up to third thanks to a 90th-minute winner from Ben Burgess against
luckless Notts County, who had gone in front via Darren Caskey just
before the hour but then let the Bees back into it with a penalty converted
by Paul Evans.
A 0-0 draw for
Bristol City at mid-table Colchester kept the Robins riding
high in fourth. But there was even better news for Huddersfield,
who were another team indebted to a 90th-minute winner in their early kick-off
against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road. Leon Knight was the Terriers'
hero with both goals in the 2-1 win. He struck first in the 70th minute,
after Ian Marshall had put the hosts in front early in the second half.
Cardiff's
promotion hopes are still on a high following a 2-0 win at home to rock-bottom
Cambridge. Graham Kavanagh, in the 36th minute and then with a penalty
just after the hour, was responsible for both goals.
Oldham
also stayed on course to challenge for a play-off spot with a 2-2 draw
at Peterborough. Howard Forinton put Posh in front in the ninth
minute only for Paul Murray to almost instantly level and Allan Smart then
put the visitors in front. But Neale Fenn kept the home crowd happy with
a point-earner in the 65th minute.
QPR dropped
a little further off the pace after a 1-0 defeat at Port Vale where
Mark Bridge-Wilkinson got the winner in the 18th minute.
Just above the
relegation zone, Bury leapfrogged Bournemouth with a 2-1
win at Gigg Lane where the hosts had to come from behind after Derek Holmes
scored for the Cherries in the 14th minute. George Clegg levelled on the
stroke of half-time, and Ian Lawson got the winner just after the hour.
Chesterfield
and strugglers Northampton earned a point each in a 2-2 draw at
Saltergate. The Spireites had to equalise twice, through Marcus Ebdon (13)
and Jamie Burt (53), after first Richard Hope (three) and then Jamie Forrester
(22) scored for the visitors.
Wigan
and Wycombe earned a mid-table point each in a 0-0 draw in the north-west.
