Oldham Evening Chronicle (www.oldham-chronicle.co.uk) Baudet to stay with Athletic FRENCH trialist Julien Baudet has been rewarded by Athletic with a contract until June 2003. The 23-year-old central defender, who played for Toulouse in France’s top division last season, impressed during a three-month trial at Boundary Park. And Athletic head coach Mick Wadsworth is convinced Baudet, who made his first start in the FA Cup first-round tie at Barrow, can become a top player. Wadsworth said: “We think Julien is young enough and big enough to become a very good player, though he is not the finished article. “Julien is a very good athlete, quick for such a big lad and a good passer and we think there is some mileage in him as he is young enough to improve. “We have a lot of senior players, but another aspect is building a team with value on the pitch. “And with players like Chris Armstrong and Julien we believe we are also doing that.” Baudet, who was brought in by Andy Ritchie, has joined Athletic on a free transfer following Toulouse’s double demotion. Toulouse were relegated and then were demoted another division because of financial irregularities enabling Baudet to become a free agent. Baudet, who earlier had trials with Crystal Palace, is delighted to have fulfilled a long-held ambition to play in England. He said: “I am very pleased to be staying and hope to be promoted and be playing in the first division next season. “There is great potential and my ambition is to play in the Premiership, and why not with Oldham?” Athletic’s preparations for Saturday’s home game against Bournemouth are being threatened by the virus which is sweeping the country. New-boy Matty Appleby is at home unwell while goalkeeper Paul Rachubka is also affected and ideally should not have played at Port Vale in midweek. Athletic are fielding a strong reserve side in tonight’s Manchester Senior Cup tie against Manchester United at Altrincham (7.0). Team: Kelly, Holden, Baudet, Haining, Smith, Rickers, Boshell, Hardy, Sugden, Tipton, Dudley. Subs: Doran, Vernon, Davenport, Griffin, O’Grady. It is just as well because the United side includes Wes Brown, John O’Shea, Luke Chadwick and Michael Stewart, who are all members of the first-team squad.

The strike duo who both suffered injuries to their ankles against Swindon last Wednesday are making progress.  Allan Smart trained for the first time today following the injury and his progress will be monitored closely by Paul. David Reeves is about two weeks away after damaging his ankle last week.  Tony Carss, Wayne Gill and Paul Jones are in a similar boat to Reeves, they are all looking at two weeks before they can rejoin first team training. David Miskelly got the all clear from the specialist this week on the surgery he had on his shoulder earlier in the month.  Paul told us David should be back in training by mid-March. Gary Kelly and Craig Dudley are both due a game this evening in the reserves fixture against Manchester United at Altrincham.

Received from a Roughyed yesterday To increase BBz readership I send a email to everyone who registers on the Oldham Chronicle exiles pages. It explains what the BBz is and ends with the line

"If you are not interested in football or the Latics I apologise for taking your time."

I received the following response from a rugby fan whose address is flashjack@onetel.net.uk:

thks for your e-mail but as a roughyed (exiled) i think it is
disgusting how your club has treated orlfc. iwould be obliged
if you would print my comments, but you probably wont even
though you lot need all the help you can get. i hope other
rugby folk see this and get the message through to greedy
football clubs like yours !! you cant live on your own
forever .you are not so big as you think. rochdale can share
and have a super ground from a sucessful partnership, but the
greed of oafc board obviously doesn't want
sucess/improvement.a joint venture would benefit everyone -
at a realistic price ,this rejection of sharing will backfire
on you ,so let the board think long & hard and come to their
senses very soon.

Comments please.

TEAMtalk (www.teamtalk.co.uk) Brown back in action
Wes Brown will make his return from injury when the reserves take on Oldham in the Manchester Senior Cup tonight. The England international has been out of action since December 1 with knee ligament damage but takes his next step on the road to recovery by lining up alongside John O'Shea at Altrincham's Moss Lane tonight.
Brown's inclusion will be a massive boost for Sir Alex Ferguson as the 22-year-old should be nearing a first-team return by the time the Champions League recommences in the middle of February. The defender will now hope to steer clear of injuries and play his way into Sven Goran Eriksson's plans for the World Cup in Japan and Korea this summer. Luke Chadwick, Ronnie Wallwork and Bojan Djordic are also named in the side tonight. Kick-off is at 7pm. United: Williams (B), Roche, O'Shea, Brown, Clegg (M), Chadwick, Stewart, Wallwork, Djordjic, Davis, Webber.

Foyewa nets in reserves defeat Amos Foyewa stepped up his bid for a first-team recall when he netted during the reserves' Avon Insurance Combination defeat at Luton yesterday. Foyewa, who has not played a competitive match since breaking his leg at Cardiff in August, made his second reserve team appearance of the season as Peter Grant's side went down 2-1.
The former West Ham United trainee netted The Cherries' only goal and may now be in contention for a squad place for Saturday's trip to Oldham. Grant said: "Amos is doing really well and it's given everyone a lift to see him back so quickly - we have got a few reserve games coming up so there will be plenty of opportunities for him to sharpen up." The Cherries' side also included trialists Danny Thomas and Michael Price and former Arsenal trainee Casey Ide. Price, 19, is on a week's trial from Third Division Hull, while Leicester City striker Thomas, 20, began his trial on Monday. Ide is a young striker from a Dorset academy who was released by the Gunners at the start of the season.

Bournemouith Daily Echo (www.thisisbournemouth.co.uk) CHERRIES midfielder James Hayter could be ruled out of their away clash at Oldham on Saturday through injury. He was stretchered off five minutes from time after colliding heavily with QPR goalkeeper Fraser Digby during AFC Bournemouth's 1-1 draw at Loftus Road on Tuesday night. It was first feared Hayter had sustained a thigh injury. But examination yesterday by Cherries physio John Cooper revealed the problem was with the player's hip bone. Cooper said: "James took a heavy knock on his hip and it was very painful for him on Tuesday night. I had a look at it yesterday morning and we'll have another look at it today. "I don't think it is too serious but James probably has only a 50-50 per cent chance of playing against Oldham."
