Evening Chronicle (www.oldham-chronicle.co.uk) Meacher
enters row over Latics ground share MP
Michael Meacher is demanding that Oldham Athletic drops its price to allow
Oldham Roughyeds to share Boundary Park. The Oldham West and Royton MP
will meet Latics chairman Chris Moore within the next few weeks to urge
him to compromise to settle the long-running row. Mr Meacher said fans
of the homeless rugby club have the right to expect community leaders to
work together to find it a permanent home in the town. The obvious place
was Boundary Park, but the club could not afford the £150,000 annual
rent demanded by Athletic. Mr Meacher said: “I want Mr Moore to consider
how the facilities at Boundary Park can be used to provide a home for the
rugby club as well, which he’s currently not prepared to do. “Obviously
I can’t tell Mr Moore what to do, but I want him to recognise that he is
dealing with something very precious in Oldham. “I shall be putting to
him that he has a public responsibility because - while he is a private
owner of the club - this is an important public issue as well. “Oldham
has a good record for rugby and a supporters’ club running into thousands
of people. They expect, quite reasonably, that a ground will be provided
for their team.” No
date has yet been fixed for the meeting, but Mr Meacher said Mr Moore had
told him he was prepared to hold talks. The Roughyeds found themselves
homeless last November and have been forced to share Ashton United’s tiny
football ground at Hurst Cross. The club insisted it could not afford the
£150,000 price, of which £60,000 would have been provided by
a council venture company. They turned down a loan of £50,000 from
Mr Moore. Athletic hit back, insisting they had not forced the Roughyeds
out and were willing to resume talks at any time. They said the rugby club
would retain car parking receipts from Boundary Park, collect the catering
franchise and make money from match sponsorship. Oldham Borough Council
has said a £520,000 new pitch was only laid at Boundary Park on the
understanding it would be used for both football and rugby. Colusso
makes an impact ATHLETIC
head coach Mick Wadsworth has been impressed with Cristian Colusso, the
Argentinian midfielder who has joined them on a week’s trial from Rosario
Central. Wadsworth has an option of taking Colusso on loan until the end
of the season. He said: “Cristian has done quite well in the couple of
days he’s been here. He has played at the highest level in Argentina. “He’s
a very humble young man. Although he speaks little English, he’s been able
to get his point across to the other players in training.” The 24-year-old
has represented his country at under-20 and under-23 level and made his
league debut at 17. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Gary Kelly continues his comeback
from a knee injury by playing for the reserves tonight against Birmingham,
at Solihull Borough (7pm). Kelly has made only three first-team appearances
in the last two months but is close to peak fitness after he was given
more time to recover from the injury. David Cross, the new reserve-team
manager, has included first-year scholar Carlos Roca in the squad. Reserves
(from): Kelly, Holden, Hardy, Baudet, Haining, Boshell, Salt, Rickers,
Sugden, Eyre, Tipton, Smith, Doran, Griffin, Roca.

Football Club Game
postponed
The reserve game
at Birmingham city this evening was called off when the Latics were 5mins
away from the Solihull Borough's damson lane ground. The Latics reserve
coach, David Cross received a telephone call, informing him that the game
had been called up due to a water logged pitch. Earlier in the afternoon
before the teams set of to Birmingham, they had been giving the all clear
that the game will take place. As you can imagine, the team was not happy
with the news. Free
Tickets...
Latics have teamed
up with national newspaper -The Sunday People - to offer its readers the
chance to get into the promotion chasing clash between Latics and Brentford
on Tuesday 26th February completely free of charge. The game has been dedicated
to the theme 'Bring A Kid'. And, to help get the proceedings underway 500
adult combined with 500 kids tickets are up for grabs. To claim your free
adult and child ticket it couldn't be easier. Starting this Sunday, and
continuing next Sunday, simply collect two special Latics tokens that are
printed in the paper and present them to the ticket office. You will then
be allocated one adult ticket and one child ticket - without having to
spend a single penny. Commenting Sean Jarvis told oldhamathletic.co.uk:
"This is a superb promotion for us. It not only guarantees us some national
exposure but more importantly it will hopefully persuade Dads, Granddad's,
Mums, Uncles etc. to bring along their children and give them a taste of
a Latics game." He added: "This is also a call to action to any Latics
fans out there who know of a child who has never been to Boundary Park
- BRING THEM ALONG!" Fans are urged to hurrry as there are a 1000 tickets
up for grabs (500 adults and 500 children) and it they will be given on
a first come first served basis.
TEAMtalk
(www.teamtalk.co.uk) Argentinian
arrives for trials The
Second Division Latics are to give a week-long trial to a 24-year-old Argentinian
international midfield player. Cristian Colusso has represented his country
at Under-20 and Under-23 levels. The left-sided player is to spend a week
at Boundary Park when he will be checked out by boss Mick Wadsworth and
his coaching staff. Colusso left behind sunshine and temperatures in the
mid-thirties and arrived in England with the country in the grip of storms
and gales. Wadsworth was alerted to his availability through his contacts
in South America. He went to Argentina several times when he was assistant
to Bobby Robson at Newcastle United. And it was Wadsworth who signed Daniel
Cordone for The Magpies from the Racing club. Colusso plays for Rosario
Central and he made his debut for them at the age of 17 - one of the youngest
to appear at the highest level. He was a member of The Pumas side which
won the World Under-20 competition in Qatar. The Latics have had work permit
problems in the past trying to sign non-European players. But should a
deal for Colusso become permanent that would not be a hitch because he
holds an Italian passport. Players in Argentina are paid in American dollars,
but because of the country's worsening financial problems, clubs are looking
to offload because they can't afford to pay their spiralling wages.
Appleby talks
scheduled On-loan
midfielder Matty Appleby could be on the verge of a permanent move to Boundary
Park. The 29-year-old is not wanted by new Barnsley boss Steve Parkin and
has impressed boss Mick Wadsworth in his first two games. He was substituted
in the last game, but only because he hadn't fully recovered from a virus.
Wadsworth said: "He capped a fine performance at Port Vale with a terrific
goal. "He marshalled the midfield and generally had a very good game. "Matty
is an excellent player and we will be talking to him with a view to a permanent
move in the near future." Appleby, who is out of contract in the summer,
is available on a free transfer.
Reserves bid
to end poor run The
Latics reserves are back in action tonight when they take on Birmingham
City. Birmingham City reserves play at the ground of non-league Solihull
Borough and the kick-off is at 7pm. The Latics second string go in search
of their first win in five games. Gary Kelly is being given another run-out
in goal in his bid to get back to full fitness after a niggling knee injury.
Defender Dean Holden, midfielder Paul Rickers and strikers John Eyre and
Matthew Tipton, who have recently been on the first team subs bench, are
also being used to keep up their match-fitness levels. French defender
Julien Baudet has been left out - an indication that he will be included
in senior action for Saturday's trip to relegation-threatened Notts County.
Injuries have played havoc with team selection this week and there is one
notable name in the squad - Iain Dowie. The first team coach will be on
the bench just in case he is needed. Full
squad: Kelly, Holden, Smith, Haining, Hardy, Boshell, Salt, Rickers, Sugden,
Tipton, Eyre, Smith, Doran, Vernon, Dowie and Whittle. Brough
bemoans poor performance
Michael Brough
admits County never gave a good enough account of themselves against Northampton
and must bounce back against Oldham on Saturday. County have only won three
games at home all season and slumped to their sixth Meadow Lane defeat
against The Cobblers. It seems as though the Meadow Lane curse has not
taken long to affect new boss Billy Dearden, and his first two home games
in charge have seen County concede six goals. However, Brough believes
the players just did not perform well against The Cobblers, saying: "This
was a massive game for us but we never came close to doing ourselves justice.
We must pick ourselves up as we have another big game against Oldham on
Saturday. "We desperately needed three points but we weren't good enough
- the manager told us afterwards and says hhe expects so much more from
us in the future." Dearden recognises the current squad have a hang-up
about playing at home. He said: "We have to be brave enough to go out and
perform in front of our own supporters." You have to go all the way back
to Neil Warnock's time in charge of The Magpies, when they won promotion
twice in successive seasons, to find the last time they made home advantage
count. Many supporters reckon it's never been the same since Notts converted
Meadow Lane into a plush all-seater stadium but whatever the reason, a
long list of managers couldn't solve the problem. Even when Sam Allardyce's
side won the Third Division title in record-breaking fashion in 1998, they
were far more effective on their travels.
