Oldham
Evening Chronicle (www.oldham-chronicle.co.uk) Athletic
back to full strength for weekend ATHLETIC
hope to be firing on all cylinders at Notts County on Saturday. Striker
David Reeves is winning his fitness battle and is on course for a recall
against one of his former clubs. Reeves has missed the last three matches
with an ankle injury, but head coach Mick Wadsworth says he is progressing
well and has a great chance of being available for Saturday. Reeves, with
three goals in his first five appearances, will intensify competition for
striking spots. Carlo Corazzin, back after a double hernia operation, led
the line solo last Saturday against Bournemouth when Allan Smart and John
Eyre were on the bench. Wadsworth had hoped Eyre and fellow front men Matthew
Tipton and Ryan Sugden would get some much-needed match action last night
in the reserves at Birmingham City. But the game at Solihull Borough was
called off with the Athletic team bus only five minutes away from the ground.
The pitch had been declared playable at 4pm but a later deluge altered
the conditions.

Update
The Official
Website spoke to Paul Caton ahead of this Saturday's trip to Notts County.
There was a knock last Saturday to full back Scott McNiven's foot, which
was causing him some discomfort when he kicked the ball. It turned
out to be bruising and Scott has been declared fit for the weekend. David
Reeves has overcome his ankle problem and will train with the first team
tomorrow after recovering fully from his injury. There was good news for
Tony Carss, last season's player of the season. He should be back
in training next week after recovering from various setbacks. Both
Paul Jones and Wayne Gill, are a couple of weeks away from returning to
first team training. Darren Sheridan is another who will be back in a week
following his injury that he received at Chesterfield. Darren is
suspended though until the Peterborough game on February 23rd. David
Miskelly continues to make good progress following his operation on his
dislocated shoulder. Latics
Lunch
The players have
this week at Boundary Park, been sampling a new healthier lunch time regime
introduced by the management in an attempt to improve the diets of the
players. Mick Wadsworth and Iain Dowie felt that the players should eat
a more high protein diet than what they were used to. The Club felt
that they could play a part in providing the players lunch and as of this
week, high protein food has been available after training. Latics

Set To Leave BP...
Striker Craig
Dudley is set to leave Boundary Park. Dudley (22) has failed to claim a
regular place in the side all season, even before the arrival of Mick Wadsworth.
Now, to give
the striker much needed First Team football, Dudley will join Third Division
Scunthorpe Utd on a month's loan in time for their game on Saturday at
Shrewsbury.
TEAMtalk
(www.teamtalk.co.uk) Dudley
departs Scunthorpe
United have completed the capture of Craig Dudley on a one month loan as
a replacement for Martin Carruthers, who needs knee surgery. With only
Brian Quailey, Steve Torpey and youngster Mark Anderson to fill the two
striking berths, Brian Laws's hand has been forced and Dudley has made
the move to Glanford Park.
The 22-year-old
former Hull City loanee has been out of favour at Boundary Park this term
- starting just six games - scoring one goall.
Reeves set to
win fitness battle
David Reeves
has a "good chance" of winning his comeback fight from ankle ligament damage
in time to face Notts County at the weekend. The veteran 34-year-old striker
has missed the last three games with ankle ligament damage but was back
running earlier this week and trained with the first team squad this morning.
Mick Wadsworth said Reeves had a "good chance" of making Saturday's visit
to relegation-threatened County. He said: "David's ankle is strong and
we are pleased with his progress." Reeves recently switched to Boundary
Park from Chesterfield following a successful loan spell when he scored
three goals in five games. Wadsworth will hope he can be among the goals
again at the weekend as The Latics look to maintain their promotion push
by picking up three points at Meadow Lane.
MP enters ground
row
MP Michael Meacher
has entered the row between The Latics and the rugby league club by suggesting
the Boundary Park hire price should be lowered. The member of parliament
for Oldham wants the Boundary Park club to lower the hire price so the
rugby club can afford to ground-share. He is to meet multi-millionaire
chairman Chris Moore in the next few weeks to plead a case for the homeless
rugby club. Environment Minister Mr Meacher explained: "Obviously, I can't
tell him what to do, but he has a public responsibility on an important
local issue. "I want him to consider how the facilities at Boundary Park
can be used to provide a home for the rugby club." The rugby club shared
in the last campaign and offered £100,000 for this season. But The
Latics insisted on £150,000 - 30 per cent of what it costs to maintain
the stadium.
Oldham council
are a third party in the dispute which has caused ill-feeling been both
sets of supporters. They say they bailed out The Latics when they were
in desperate financial trouble - before Mr Moore launched his take-over
bid. A lease signed between the parties said that The Latics must use their
"best endeavours" to accommodate the rugby club, but they say they have
done that. The local authority hit back to say that they provided the money
for the £520,000 pitch which was laid during the summer. That was
done on the understanding that Boundary Park would be used for both football
and rugby. However, even with Mr Meacher's intervention there looks little
likelihood of ending the deadlock.
Reserves clash
rained off The
Latics reserve team game against Birmingham last night was called off because
of waterlogged pitch. The team coach was just five minutes from Solihull
Borough's ground - where The Blues play their second string fixtures -
when they were told. They turned round and headed back to Boundary Park.
Now club officials are to make a protest to the Avon Insurance League about
the late call-off. The Latics say they were told that the pitch was okay
at quarter to three, but were informed on the coach mobile telephone that
it was off. Chief executive Alan Hardy said: "It was very disappointing." Allsopp
return hopes
County could
have top-scorer Danny Allsopp available again for Saturday's home game
against Oldham as he is set to recover from a leg injury. And the Aussie
striker will be a man under pressure if, as expected, he shakes off the
problem in time to play. Not only have The Magpies lost their last four
matches, they have also failed to score in the last three and the goals
output from strikers in recent weeks has been appalling. Part of the reason
for that is that Allsopp has lost his touch after a flying start to the
season and it is not unreasonable to suggest that if County are to dig
their way out of relegation trouble, he will need to make a big contribution.
Everything looked rosy from Allsopp's point of view as he knocked in 16
goals in the first 23 league and cup matches of the season and the talk
was that he would spearhead a challenge for promotion - providing no-one
came in with a bid that Notts could not refuse. But it does not take long
in football for things to turn and his only goal since the end of October
was at Wrexham on Boxing Day, when a mis-hit shot went through the goalkeeper's
legs. It is imperative at this time, especially with Mark Stallard troubled
by a groin problem that will eventually require surgery, that Allsopp rediscovers
his scintillating early-season form. And it is probably not overstating
the case to say that County's survival hopes could hinge on how he responds
to the challenge.
Brough seeking
confidence boost Michael
Brough is in no doubt about the importance of a good result against Oldham
to build up County's flagging confidence levels. It is vital that Notts
don't allow four straight defeats to become five and as Brough points out,
a sharp injection of confidence is needed in view of their up-coming schedule.
Notts travel to meet runaway leaders Reading next week and then face a
home game against Stoke City. Brough said: "We have to take three points
against Oldham to give our confidence a boost.
"We managed
to give Reading and Stoke a good game at home and I'm sure we can do the
same again. But it will be so much better to face them with our confidence
high."
