Regadung the bomb that was dropped behind the Fox Inn at Thringstone, the lady who ran the pub Mary Ann Musson was my Great Aunt. The story I was told was the bomb landed at the back of the pub in a field and all the windows were blown out.
The Mussons were either in the bookie or pub landlord trade. My great grandfather ran the Three Crowns in Whitwick and was tragedically killed when his trap overturned by the Church and he landed on the spikes of the railings. My father, Herbert Stanyard was steward at Whitwick working Mens club in the early 1950s as I can remember living there as a young girl. Great memories as I probably have visited lots of the pubs or have memories of them before they were closed.
many thanks for a lovely web site
Bev Croasdell
PS I'm not sure but I think there was once a pub in Green Lane

Tried to leave you a message via the relevant web page, but it came up blank,so I came this way instead. The web site on Thringstone is excellent - I have been hooked! I am especially interested in the Charnwood Forest Railway/Canal,as I live at Springfield, and regularly walk my dog in the area (in fact,I have walked my dogs around here since 1981,so have seen many changes !!).I will be interested to hear of any new findings ,and also of new developments regarding Grace Dieu Priory - my dog and I are good friends of Rusty Mary : we visit her at least twice a day!!!
Many thanks, Ro

I found your site after web-searching for the Charnwood Forest Canal, following the feature on ITV's 'Waterworld'. I really enjoyed the historical info associated with this - thanks!

My multi-great grandmother, Mary Chapman, was born in Thringstone in 1781 though she called it Thrinkton in the census. I found you through Google and thank you for your history and photographs

Hello......I was just browsing the net and I came across your wonderfully amazing website. I have never seen anything so interesting in my entire life...so informative. Also I can officially say that all the information on here is correct because I was a nun in my past life and I lived at the priory....I had a very religious past life and it was very moving to read all about my old home...It brought back a lot of things that had slipped my mind....well, I am in a different body now....450 years later....so I guess my memories would be quite weak, but thank you for bringing them back to life for me. Sister Agnes

Five years ago I first signed the TOL guest book (now archived) on Millennium Eve. Though prone to periods of neglect by the webmaster (me !), its great to see that the site has had a steady flow of visitors from all over the world and the frontpage counter now stands at 11,000. Even better to see that the site is proving to be a much-used resource by others - for example, forming the basis of a recently published booklet, 'The Ghosts of Grace Dieu'. Unfortunately, during one of my distracted periods, I lost the domain name 'thringstone.com', so hopefully this can be re-acquired, or some other appropriate handle. Wishing all readers a Happy 2005 - especially Bekah, Hannah, Imogen and Belle. Also thinking of those two lucky devils in Australia (Gayle and James), and me old mate Mark ! - Steve Badcock x
