Faith and reason

Reiki and Christianity

At this point I would say that there is a positive effect that a Reiki practitioner can make and that is giving attention and showing concern for a person who needs care and healing. One could also actually lay on hands and pray for healing in the Christian tradition.

A few sources or persons mentioned Attunement and I was sort of shocked to find the followings on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reiki :

When the attunement is given, depending on the type of attunement, Reiki Symbols are placed into your Crown, Heart, and /or Palm Chakras[1]. During the attunement, Chakras are opened and cleared. Reiki symbols are used and there is transference of Reiki energy during the attunement. Central to this process is the establishment of a connection with the source of Reiki.

Now maybe I understand more how a Catholic Sister from India who teaches and gives spiritual direction in Europe has any of her directees who practiced or received Reiki to renounce in their heart this practice. A person we know who attended her retreat told us about how she had to do this.

Also, when I went to the web site of the Department of Evangelisation, Diocese of Johannesburg South Africa :

http://www.catholic-jhb.org.za/articles/reiki.html

they denounced Reiki and said anyone who received it(Reiki) should go to confession and then go to the Blessed Sacrament for a week.

From my experience in Africa and Central America, I know that many occult/weird practices have terrible effects and that the Catholic Church in general is very wary of many things. So, I have to have some respect to both the above opinions and practices.

So, where do we stand? Personally I have not integrated how going to some Reiki Master is the way to become a healer and pray-er using the Holy Spirit, I am puzzled about the path to this healing method. Any comments are appreciated.

One thing emerged with clarity for me from our conversations about reiki with various people: One Christian pactinioner of reiki said that there was a Hebrew, Jesus who learned of this universal life energy and used it for healing... This statement is in contradiction with basic Christian (and of course Catholic) doctrine about the person of Jesus Christ! This statement basically denies the divinity of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ, the Son of God as the Second Person of the Trinity does not use a "universal life energy" but He himself is the source of healing and the only one. There is no independent, impersonal universal energy that is above Jesus Christ.

This case illustrates how every gnosis works, the adherents without knowing it and while thinking of themselves as Christians become extraneous to Christianity. For this reason I am more convinced then ever that Reiki is misleading and harmful practice. Reiki belongs to the New Age current and promoting its agenda among Christians by trying to disguise its religious natare that is inherently non-Christian (and even anti-Christian).
