TIPS FOR THE
ASPIRING P.H.O.N. LOCAL BRANCH WEBMASTER
I know you have been looking very enviously
at the Ryan Branch website so I offer a number of suggestions
about how to go about devising , uploading and maintaining a
website for your branch of PAULINE HANSON'S ONE NATION.
As there is a lot of information you
might like to print this page. Note that I am also the
Queensland One Nation webmaster.See this at www.qld.onenation.com.au.
If you are a complete beginner with computers I suggest you
obtain the Readers Digest book "
How to do Anything on a Computer " ( $67 posted
from Readers Digest in Sydney : ISBN 1 876689 66 8 ). They will
send you a bill with this very comprehensive and simply written
book. They will then annoy you interminably with junk mail.
TAFE Colleges run web design courses for beginners however I
suggest you do not enrol until you have educated yourself about
the internet and how your computer's operating system works to
create files and how they are stored and moved around the hard
disk. This is because web design programs assume basic keyboard
skills. You should be able to use a word processing
program before you start as this gives you the basic skills to
use in web design.
If you wish to acquaint yourself more generally
about computers I suggest the sixth edition of H.
L. Capron "COMPUTERS" ( Addison Wesley
: 2001: ISBN 0 201 33613 8 ). This comes with a very useful
cd which assists you greatly. Don't be lonely while
using your computer. Visit www.bonzi.com
and download BONZIBUDDY. This is a purple , speaking ape
who keeps you entertained. For US$9.95 a month you can
then become a Bonzibuddy Gold Member and get a regular newsletter
and a fresh supply of jokes which Bonzibuddy tells in a random
manner. You right click on the ape to activate its menu a part of
which is an electronic diary with a reminder function.
- Think about what you would like to put on the website. You
could start with a text only site with only one page.
- You can do it on your own. I bought an
IBM Thinkpad , Curt Simmons book on Windows Millenium
Edition and then carefully explored the various
components of Windows ME ( my computer's operating system
).
- Learn how to type and to use the variety of keys
on the keyboard. You can download a free typing
tutoring program called typingmaster2002 from
www.typingmaster.com
. This is what I did. I then perfected my keyboard skills.
- Educate yourself about the internet and be aware of how
websites are found and what makes them interesting to
look at. Don't try to start with a complicated
site using sophisticated software. This can come
later.
- Bundled with INTERNET EXPLORER,
microsoft's web browsing program, is a cut down version
of Micrsoft Front Page, called Front Page Express.
If you look in Programs , look at accessories, then
internet, then front page express. Do not confuse this
with Front Page 2000 or Front Page 2002. You have to buy
these large programs.
- Bundled with NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR, another
web browsing program, is Netscape Composer.
Like Front Page Express this is a simple web site
authoring program. Both are quite adequate for a simple
site.
- A web page must have a title. If it the
first page it must be called ....index.html....The suffix
or file extension name .html indicates that the file is a
web page. Your computer will probably store this file in
the My Documents section. To change
the content in a web page you must access it from the
files inside your web editing software ,
e.g. Frontpage Express. Save the amended web page when
you are finished.
- If you want to have more than one
page on your site you have to link each page to the home
page at least. To do this you have to create a hyperlink
. Put all your hyperlinks at the bottom of each page in a
rational manner. Alternatively you can put the hyperlinks
down the side of the home page . This happens with the
website of the P.H.O.N. Broken Hill site.
- Be clear at the start how your web authoring
program creates hyperlinks. If not you will incorrectly
create links so that when your site is uploaded
to the internet service provider's computer the links
will not work, alas. If this happens you
have to correctly create the links, save the amended
page, and upload it with the same file name.
- Having created a website you now have to make a decision.
The site has to have an address. Mine is http://au.oocities.com/onenationryan
. This is called a sub-domain. If it was www.onenation.org.au
it would have its own domain. The party's website www.onenation.com.au
has its own domain. It costs money both
to register a domain name and for your internet service
provider to host it.Try visiting www nameit.com.au where
you can register a domain name such as www.onenationanywhere.org
for $75 for 2 years.A credit card or direct deposit
payment is required.
- My site sits on the YAHOO! GEOCITIES section of the
Ozemail computer in Sydney. It costs the Ryan Branch nothing
as it is a banner site with an ad in the right hand top
corner as you have seen. The only problem with this is
that search engines find sites with sub-domains
hard to find. Trellian Software at www.trellian.com has a
program which submits your web site to a huge number of
search engines. It is called Submit Wolf Pro and sells in
Harvey Norman shops for $150. Have a look at the
Trellian site first as you can download a 31 day trial
version with which you can submit your web site to a huge
number of search engines around the world via the
Trellian web site. Pay them US$95 and you a have
a downloaded fully functioning version with monthly free
upgrades. Another way to go about it is to visit www.ineedhits.com and
look at the advice it contains and download one or more
of the web site submission software programs there.See
also www.addme.com . A
good book on this topic is Robin Nobles and Susan O'Neil
" Maximize Web Site Traffic" (Adams
Media Corp : 2000 : ISBN 1 58062 3697 ).
- To upload your site to the YAHOO!GEOCITIES host visit http://au.geocities.yahoo.com/
. Follow the uploading instructions. If your page or
pages have been successfully uploaded it will say so.
Then click FILE MANAGER to look at them. Write down your
password. Don't be the only person in
your branch who knows it.
- When you are ready to try a more complicated web
authoring program either buy one or download one . I have
visited www.download.com
and downloaded the free COFFEE CUP HTML EDITOR
which has fancy things like JAVASCRIPT. You can find out
more about this popular software by visiting www.coffeecup.com .This
is a large 10.5 megabyte program. Apparently it has 8
million users. .
- To get a link to your site in the members, then branch
meetings section of the party's site advise the web
address to our national webmaster, SUSAN BRYCE, at webmaster@onenation.com.au
. State branch websites may also allow a link. Note that
the national webmaster does not maintain STATE P.H.O.N.
Division websites. Each P.H.O.N. division has its own
webmaster. In NSW it is Brian Zarth. In W.A. it is Lance
Baker. In South Australia it is Ian Marston. In the N.T.
it is Wayne Norris.Your state director knows.
- A very useful book is Bud Smith and Arthur Bebak "Creating
Web Pages for Dummies" (IDG Books: ISBN 0-7645-0357-x
). This has a cd with it . You can install programs from
it. To grasp the huge variety of information in it you
would definitely not want to be a dummy. Other good books
are Wendy WILLARD "WEB DESIGN"
(Osborne : 2001 : Isbn 0-07-213390-2 : $50 ) , Joe Burns "
Web Site Design Goodies " ( $65 : Que :
2001 : ISBN 0 7897 2485 5 ). Joe has an accompanying site
www.htmlgoodies.com
which is very interesting. The ultimate guide is Peter
Kentie " Web Design Tools and Techniques "
( $80 : 2001 : Peachpit Press : Berkeley , California :
ISBN 0 201 71712 3 )
- A variety of websites exist to assist people creating
sites. Some you might like to visit are www.werbach.com ,www.webreview.com
, www.webmonkey.com
, www.useit.com , www.thenet-usa.com ,
www.zdnet.com .
- To liven up your emails I suggest you download the
amazing free program INCREDIMAIL from www.incredimail.com
. This is a 4 megabyte program. With it you can quickly
extract incoming emails from your ISP's email section and
then read them in colour. You then have to install it as
your default email program possibly replacing Outlook
Express.
- You may wish to use one or more photographs
in your web site. To do this a scanner
is required. Start by taking your photo to a photography
shop. They will scan it on to a diskette. If your
computer has the software to accept the image click my
computer in your desktop . Click disk drive. The image
will then be absorbed and given a name by your image
editor software. Right click the icon so created on your
desktop and send it to my documents or my pictures or
wherever you choose. You can then insert it into a web
page after you have reduced or cropped the image to a
suitable size. To do this you have to learn how it is
done on your imaging software. I use 602 Pro Suite
Photoeditor. A very useful book about scanners and image
editors is Jill Gilbert's "How to do
Everything with your Scanner" ( Osborne :
2001 : ISBN 0-07-219106-6 ).
- Install a firewall program, such as Zonealarm,
free from www.zonelabs.com
. This stops hackers and reveals attempts by them to hack
into your computer while you are connected to an internet
service provider. Install an anti-virus program, such as
Nod32, an anti virus program recommended by Australian PC
User magazine.Cost is $82.50. Call 07 3204 5000 or visit www.nod32.com.au .Be
sure to download on a weekly basis new virus definitions
from the software providers web site. A virus scan done
regularly will reveal any viruses sent to you by email
although a good program spots them as they come in via an
email. The software then quarantines them. A good book on
this is Matthew Danda "Protect Yourself
Online" (Microsoft Press ; $48 : ISBN 0 735
611 882 ).
- Finally a message..........................enjoy
yourself..............be creative................think
about the people looking at your website.............think
about adding , when you can do it, such things as
animated GIFs and Java applets......all of which and much
more are in COFFE CUP HTML EDITOR which is mentioned
above.
