I've been wandering around on Safiel sites and found that many of them spell his name as "Saffiru", which looks very correct...I'm beginning to doubt if I'm spelling it right. I was just assuming my subtitles were right. Then again, Esmeraude was "Esmerodoo" and Dimando was "Demondo"...so maybe not. But I decided on Safiel, because, man, doesn't that sound cool? Anyhow, Safiel is an excellent, excellent character. You can tell he's related to Dimando :P
Safiel's character in anime is devoted solely to Prince Dimando, his brother. He always does what his brother tells him, and even when he doubts he carries out the Prince's orders. Mostly, he makes these little energy-sucking statues for Esmeraude and is in charge of monitoring the Dark Crystal. He is very suspicious of Wiseman, but when he tells Dimando this, the Prince brushes him off. Finally, when Safiel has proof, Wiseman blasts him to Earth. He is found by Petz, and an old love stirs between them again. Unfortunately, before he could tell Dimando of Wiseman's treachery, Wiseman murdered him. But the bandages fall from his face and a smooth, bare forehead is revealed...no sign of the Black Moon. He had been cleansed of his family evil.
In manga, you don't get so deep into Safiel's character. The deep love and loyalty for Dimando is there, but a strangely violent side of him is also revealed. He tries to murder Sailor Moon, and then is later brainwashed by Wiseman and tries to murder Dimando *gasp*. Just for this reason, I prefer anime Safiel. In the manga, Dimando ends up having to kill his own brother, Safiel, due to Wiseman's brainwashing. *bursts into tears*
*sniff* Sorry, I'm ok. Well, Safiel's character is much more sweet and sensitive than any of the other Black Moon members. Perhaps this is why Petz loved him. Besides his devotion to Dimando, this is my favorite thing about Safiel. His love with Petz is very sincere and very soft. It's hard to explain...but even the horrible english dub managed to portray their love. Thats saying something. Safiel gave Petz his jacket, but died before he was able to retrieve it. I could never forget her last words - "Safiel-sama will always live inside of me, with that last smile he gave me."
