Metro Bowl

1982

Date: Sunday, November 21st

Venue: Lamport Stadium, Toronto

St. Michael's College Kerry Blues defeated Woburn Wildcats

Noteworthy:
Of the six high school leagues operating within Toronto (TDCAA, TSSAA, Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough and York), only two leagues participated.  The champions of two of the four leagues backed out shortly before the semi-finals were to be played (North York and York) advising that they were not aware of the game and citing insurance concerns for the withdrawal.
Numerous printed articles have incorrectly detailed the score of this game as 14-13.  Research of both the Toronto Star and Globe and Mail indicate that the score was 13-0.

St. Michael's College Kerry Blues 13, Woburn Wildcats 0

The first Metro Bowl was contested between the St. Michaels College Kerry Blues (TDCAA champions) and the Woburn Wildcats (Scarborough champions).

Played in a steady rain, the game remained scoreless until the mid way mark of the second quarter when Chris Rick would carry the ball three yards to record the first touchdown in the history of the Metro Bowl.  St. Michaels would add a second touchdown in the third quarter as their pivot, John Krasnick, who hailed from Virginia, would engineer a 45 yard touchdown march.  The rookie QB, who had been hospitalized with a punctured ear drum would deliver a 11 yard pass play to Pat DiCosimo to give the Kerry Blues first and goal from the three.  Pete Douglas moved the ball to the one setting up Chris Rick's second touchdown, this time from the one.  Conrad Mandella would successfully convert the second touchdown with his point after travelling on to King Street where the ball barely missed a streetcar.

Game MVP honours went to Chris Rick, who ironically was only playing due to an injury to the Kerry Blues star running back John Frezell.  Frezell had torn his knee ligaments during a TDC semi-final playoff game.

The Kerry Blues were coached by Mike Colle.

The game featured only 338 yards in total yardage with the Wildcats limited to a net total of 113 yards.  Mark Applewaithe led the Wildcat offense with 67 yards on 13 carries.

Attendance: Toronto Star reported attendance as 500 while the Globe and Mail reported the attendance as being approximately 800 per the chairman of the event, Peter Gorman who also stated that 3500 tickets had been sold with many of the fans probably deterred by the weather and "other attractions".
