Metro Bowl Championship

St. Michaels College Kerry Blues 42, Etobicoke 6

David Grossman provided the following game report in the November 23rd, 2002 edition of the Toronto Star:

It's the little things that win big games.

St. Michael's Kerry Blues proved it all season and last night was no different as the all-boys' private high school easily beat the Etobicoke Rams 42-6 in the 20th Metro Bowl football championship before only about 1,200 fans at SkyDome.

The Kerry Blues, who finished the year at 10-0, were a little too big, a little too quick, a little too strong and a little too deep for the Rams- who had problems with penalties, fumbles and trying to curtail St. Mike's huge offensive and defensive linemen.

And then there was the outstanding play of George Polyzois, who scored a touchdown, kicked four converts, a single and burned the Rams with his elusive punt returns and running.

St. Mike's took an 8-0 first-quarter lead due largely to Etobicoke penalties and some shabby special-teams tackling by the Rams.

Polyzois missed on a rare 24-yard field goal, which rolled out of bounds for a single. However, the Kerry Blues' multi-purpose player- a Toronto Star all-star- showed his versatility, returning a punt 47 yards after Etobicoke was unable to sustain an offensive drive.

Four plays later, Jan Naranowicz reached the end zone on a 10- yard run for St. Mike's first touchdown of the game.

With Etobicoke again struggling, playing most of the first half in its own end, a frustrated Rams squad was called for a trio of illegal procedure penalties and Polyzois again caused trouble with a 24-yard punt return that led to another major.

St. Mike's quarterback Karl Phillips completed his first pass of the game, a 31-yarder to a wide open Mike Boynton, and Polyzois added his second convert of the game to put St. Mike's up 15-0 at halftime.

Etobicoke, hoping to get back in the game, instead turned the ball over on its first drive of the second half when running back Kevin Walsh fumbled on the Rams' 33-yard line. Anthony Morris, a former provincial sprint champ, scored his first of two touchdowns in the third quarter and the Kerry Blues were on their way to winning a third Metro Bowl title.

Polyzois scored his touchdown on an 11-yard run while Torname Oke ended the rout on a 28-yard major with 2: 47 left in the game.
