The Toronto Star published the following report by David Grossman on Decmeber
8th:
Take that, Pickering.
For days, the St. Michael's Kerry Blues and quarterback Chris Rossetti kept hearing about how the mighty Pickering Trojans defence can do this and can do that.
Unstoppable is how some put it.
But last night in the 25th annual Metro Bowl, it was Rossetti's team who couldn't be stopped in an 18-0 upset victory before a disappointing crowd of 500 or so fans at the Rogers Centre.
Rossetti ran for a touchdown and passed for another to lead the Kerry Blues to the school's fifth title. He was named the Toronto Star MVP for his efforts.
"I'm living a dream. This is great. We kept hearing us as the underdogs, all the hype about the great defence of Pickering," said Rossetti, who was 8 of 13 for 129 passing yards. "We knew they were a great team but we also knew we were better. Our defensive guys did a job on them and we did a job on their defence."
Pickering won the Metro Bowl title last year.
Rossetti scored the first touchdown of the game, on a 1-yard keeper with 10:05 left in the second quarter. His 38-yard TD strike to Alex Francella with 6:56 to go in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach.
Andrew Corso's 17-yard field goal 41 seconds before halftime gave the Kerry Blues a 10-0 cushion. Corso converted both TDs while Louis Polyzois added a single.
"I didn't expect to shut (Pickering) out. I'm very surprised," said St. Mike's coach Paul Forbes. "I told the guys that execution and teamwork would win the game. When you have a guy like (Rossetti), that touchdown pass was the key."
St. Mike's had stellar performances from running backs Eddie Houghton, with 85 yards on 21 carries, and Andrew Quittenton with another 53 on five carries. Pickering was held to 87 yards rushing and another 87 in passing.
Pickering coach John Martini was disappointed, but not exactly stunned by the result.
"They overpowered us but this is no surprise; they have an outstanding team," said Martini. "We just couldn't get anything going, and we had bad field position, (penalties) cost us, dropped balls, turnovers — that's the way it goes. St. Mike's is our nemesis."
Pickering running back Juevol Myles said St. Mike's deserved the victory.
"It's so frustrating. (St. Mike's) did their homework. They were better prepared and knew us inside out," said Myles, held to 16 yards on three carries.
