Preview
Roles are reversed as the Bay of Quinte senior football league schedule kicks off this week.
The perennial powerhouse Centennial Chargers come into the season in the unfamiliar position of runners-up while the arch-rival Quinte Saints are defending Bay of Quinte champions.
Saints ended a 12-year reign by the Chargers last season with a 12-0 victory over Centennial in the 2008 final.
Quinte coach Rick Elliott says the victory was sweet -- and the memory still is -- but his team won't waltz into the 2009 season with any kind of championship swagger.
"It was nice to win, that's for sure," said Elliott. "But we can't take anything for granted. I think it's going to be a very competitive league this season. Very close."
At Centennial, second-year head coach Scott Symons is eager to shrug the mantle as "the coach who broke the string" of Charger titles. He swapped jobs with Joe Dicresce last year after several seasons with the junior Chargers.
"The kids know how much I want it," says Symons.
At Moira, the Trojan glory years may seem like a distant memory but steady progress has been made over the last few seasons as MSS battles back to a place of prominence in the BQ gridiron scene.
"We have a good group of kids," says head coach Dave Corbett. "They're working hard and getting better."
Here's a look at the three Belleville-based teams in the Bay of Quinte senior league. (Other members are the Trenton Tigers, Bayside Red Devils and North Hastings Huskies.)
QUINTE SAINTS
Key players: At press time, Elliott had yet to decide on his starter at quarterback -- Matt Donaldson, a third-year senior, or Ian Norby, normally a slotback. Whoever lines up behind centre has the tough task of replacing Andrew Ling, who is now at McMaster University. Saints have lost three offensive linemen from last year's championship squad and Elliott said there'll be a learning curve for their junior replacements. Veterans Brad Dainard (SB), Matt Dings (wideout) and Norby are expected to get a lot of touches while rookie senior Dylan Semark (RB) should also get some work.
Defensively, Elliott welcomes back the core of his linebacking unit -- Carson Nelles, Josh Pearsall and Connor Andrews -- while Chad Bain will be a leader on the defensive line. Andrews spent the summer playing provincial club football in Kingston with the Limestone Grenadiers.
The coach says: "There's quite a bit of turnover on offence," said Elliott. "We had quite a few fifth-year players last season. But, there's a pretty good nucleus returning too. Norby will be a key guy at QB or slotback and Dainard should have a good season if we can get him the ball. Dings has good wheels.
"I'm pretty happy so far with the defence. There's a core group of guys that, if they can stay healthy, we'll be OK."
Outlook: It'll be a tall order to repeat, but Saints will strive to stay on top.
CENTENNIAL CHARGERS
Key players: Symons returns a veteran squad -- "in that regard, we're like Quinte was last year," he says -- with holdovers on offence including QB Jake Culp, 260-pound tailback Shannon Kirby, SB Connor McCann and an offensive line that features 300-pound bookends in John Wilson and Brandon Lentini. Doit-all junior grad Dylan Staveley-Watson will also find steady employment in the backfield.
Defensively, Chargers will be led by defensive tackles Tyler White and Tylor Deline while fellow veterans Jesse Earl (LB) and Alec Bauer (S) will also provide leadership.
The coach says: "We've lost only five players from last year, we've got 44 on our roster and we have 40-plus at practice every day -- they're committed," said Symons. "It's a good group of kids and they're totally hungry. They want something that they didn't get last year and it's easier to motivate them as runners-up than champions. That said, I expect a tough league. Trenton will be good, Moira has a great QB (Phil Willemsen) and Quinte has a large pool to pick from."
Outlook: Chargers are pumped to get back into the Bay of Quinte winner's circle. They'll be tough to stop.
MOIRA TROJANS
Key players: Strong-armed veteran quarterback Phil Willemsen is an EOBA baseball all-star pitcher and should be able to stretch the field this season if his rookie receiver corps can get open and he gets sufficient blocking from his offensive line. If not, Willemsen will be content to hand the ball off to beefed-up halfback Luke Shillington or fullback Josh Cowan. Slotback Eric Miller will also be a factor on offence when he returns next week from the injured list. Ryan Hamilton anchors the O line.
On defence, Corbett says Trojans are young but enthusiastic. Veterans include linebackers Chass Maracle and Dan Burley, while Devin Graszat and Connor Malcolm provide experience on the line. Shandon Maracle has shown training camp promise at noseguard.
The coach says: "Our offence should be pretty good," said Corbett. "We have a strong running game and should be able to throw the ball. It'll all come down to whether our big kids can block. On defence, we have a lot of good athletes who haven't played a lot of football, so we're pretty green."
Outlook: Steady gains are being made at Moira with some excellent athletes and a dedicated group of coaches. More of the same this season.
