BERMUDA

As some of you may or may not know, I (CJ) am from Bermuda.  I get asked a lot why I would move away from somewhere as nice as Bermuda.   As wonderful as it is, and as much as I miss it, it is too small !!!  It's a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, that could fit into most towns here in the US.

Contrary To Popular belief.. Bermuda Is NOT in the Caribbean.  Bermuda is a Territory of Great Britain and is located about 600 miles East of the United States (east of North Carolina to be precise).  That's a 2 hr flight from New York .  The people who are native to Bermuda are called Bermudians (That's with an i) not Bermudans. ;-)
The entire country is made up of hundreds of small islands, but the 7 large ones are joined by bridges and causeways forming one Island, about 21 miles long and one and a half miles wide at its widest point.  It was discovered in 1503 by Juan de Bermudez (thus the name).  When the first sailors saw the island they thought it was haunted because they could hear strange noises coming from the woods. They nicknamed the island "Devil's Isle".  They didn't know that the noises were caused by Wild Hogs (which is pictured on the back of a Bermuda Penny) and Cahow birds which, until the 1950's, were thought to be extinct.  The island is also completely surrounded by reefs and to this day there are hundreds of shipwrecks all around Bermuda, which doesn't help the "Devil's Isle" label any.

In 1609 Sir George Sommers set out for America on board the Sea Venture.  The ship ran into a storm and happened to come across Bermuda .  They headed for the island hoping to be able to perhaps repair the ship and continue on to America, but as they approached the island the Sea Venture became grounded on one of the reefs.  The Passengers and crew managed to make it safely to shore.  Then they all stood and watched as the ship sank to the bottom of the ocean.  They decided to settle there since they had no other choice and in 1612 it officially became a Colony.

Over the years many Artists have been inspired by Bermuda. Georgia Okeefe lived there and completed 12 works in 1934, including "The Banyan Tree Trunk.".  Mark Twain(aka Samuel Clemmens) considered Bermuda his second home.
