Bare Facts: Unknown ~ Born 2004 ~ Mother Racey ~ Father Unknown ~ Children None ~ ID Unknown
Canoona was born in 2004, to Racey. He/she was Racey's first calf, and the 12-year-old proved herself a capable mother, as researchers and orca-lovers watched the little calf pass its perilous 1st-year-mark.
Canoona joined a family made up of grandma Skagit, mom Racey, aunts Sunny, Roller and Kiltik, and cousin Nalau. Sometimes they travelled with greatgrandma Yakat, great-aunt Nahwitti, and great-uncle Skeena.
Canoona survived its perilous first year, and was named by the BC Killer Whale Adoption Program in early 2006.
Also in 2006, however, tragedy struck the calf. On July 14, 2006, Canoona was hit by a boat in Johnstone Strait. No one is sure what happened to the calf or if it survived. A week later, however, we found out that the baby's mother, Racey, had disappeared and was presumed dead. If the calf did survive the collision, Canoona's chances look slim.
Well, I'll learn not to make assumptions! Although the calf's status remains a mystery, the little one is not confirmed dead. After Racey's disappearance, aunt Kiltik was seen taking care of Canoona, so maybe the baby has a chance! This certainly means Kiltik has her hands full, with 2 two-year-olds! We should get more updates soon.
