Bare Facts: Female? ~ Born 1999 ~ Mother Clio ~ Father Unknown ~ Children None ~ ID Curved fin; large nick out of FRONT edge of fin (highly unique)
Bend (A72) was born in 1999, the same year his/her oldest uncle (Strider) died. He/she was born only a few months before Strider's death.
Bend was born to Clio (A50), her first calf. Clio was fifteen at the time.
Bend was named after the tilt in his dorsal fin, and also after Bend Island. An interesting fact is that Bend Island is in Clio Channel, which his/her mom is named after! We still don't know whether Bend's a he or a she.
Bend was born into a family of four (not counting Strider) adults, so the calf didn't really have anyone to play with. Probably, the little one played with Blinkhorn, who was only ten years older than him/her.
Then in 2001, when Bend was 2 years old, he/she gained a new cousin...and a playmate, when Blinkhorn had her first calf, Cedar (A75).
After that, Bend and Cedar became playmates.
Clio has proven a good mother. Bend is now 6 years old and healthy and happy...in fact, he/she now has a younger sibling! Clio gave birth in mid-2005 to a new calf!
Especially since the birth of his/her new sister/brother, Bend has begun to wander off. While the young orca still sticks pretty much to mom, he/she goes off exploring as much as he/she can! The young whale, however, is very close to Clio and the new baby, and is most often seen right next to them.
It's possible that Bend is female, and this may have been determined by DNA testing. This, however, hasn't been confirmed yet.
