Cedar was born on September 6, 2001, to Blinkhorn (A54). This was slightly surprising, since Blinkhorn was only 12 at the time, which is young for an orca to have a calf. Cedar is Blinkhorn's first calf.
Cedar found a playmate in Bend, his/her cousin, who's only 2 years older than Cedar.
Blinkhorn, though young and new at this mother business, seems to be doing well. Cedar, who was named after an island at the entrance to Knight Inlet, is now 4 years old and still going strong. We don't know whether Cedar is a girl or boy yet though-that could take a while. Cedar's fin is really beginning to ressemble his/her grandmother's...like Tsitika, this little one has a very curved, sharp fin.
Cedar is still sticking pretty close to her mom these days, but as he/she grows, the little calf is playing more and more with cousin Bend, and exploring of course!
In June 2006, Blinkhorn gave birth again to A86. Cedar now plays with the new addition and helps mom with keeping an eye on the baby.
