The Second Attempt at Light Rail in Orlando
UPDATED 7/22/02

THE SECOND ATTEMPT AT LIGHT RAIL
The second proposal is along I-4 northward from downtown Orlando to Maitland. This route has been approved for some studies though there are many bridges yet to be crossed. Mettroplan has re affirmed to build Light Rail in Orlando.

THE ROUTE
The first route will be from a planned Intermodal Transportation Center to be built in downtown. From there it will follow I-4 roughly northward to Maitland. There are ideas of several spurs and jogs in the line and these are yet to be worked out. One spur may be over SR 436.

THE SOUTHERN LEG
The southern route has just been designated. It will follow I-4 south to Kirkman Road. It will then follow Kirkmand and I-4 to the Orange County Convention Center. A leg is being considered at the Airport.

STATUS
Right now a study is being done on the routes. This will take a little time to conduct. The Northern route most likely be built first.

BATTLE LINES
Ax the Tax has already staged a protest or two about the route. However that pales in comparison to the numerous letters to the editor that have been written by citizens such as me. Lynx has been agressive with holding public meetings on Light Rail with little resistance from Ax the Tax.
The Orange County Board is under pressure to do something about the worsening traffic situation on I-4.
