This is Amtraks' May 1, 1971 timetable. This is their first schedule.

Amtrak ran the Northeast corridor with four daily trains on the New York to Washington line with several more daily except Saturday and/or Sunday trains.

The New York to Boston line ran three daily trains with four daily except Saturday and /or Sunday trains.

The Philadelphia to Harrisburg line ran "The Duquesne" and the "Broadwasy Limited" with several locals on the line. "The Broadway Limited" ran with a lounge car, dining car, and coaches, and "The Duquesne" ran with coaches and snack-bar coach.

The New York to Buffalo line ran three through trains with four running just to Albany. All Trains has coaches and snack bar coaches.

Train #49-31-15 ran from New York to Kansas City with coaches, dining lounge car, and sleepers.

The "Southern Crescent" was listed as an Amtrak train but at the last minute the Southern Railway backed out and ran the train on its own. Equipment was coaches New York to Atlanta, diner-buffet lounge, New York to Atlanta, sleepers from New York to Atlanta, with sleepers on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from New York to Los Angeles, coach on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from New York to New OrleansDome-lounge car on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday from Atlanta to New Orleans, dome car from New Orleans to Atlanta on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and Sleepers daily from New York to Los Angeles.

The "Silver Star" from New York to Miami on the Seaboard Coast Line with coaches, tavern lounge, diner, sleepers.

The "Silver Meteor" from New York to Miami with coaches, tavern lounge, diner, sleepers, and bar lounge sleeper.

The "Champion" ran from New York to St. Petersburg, Fla, with sleepers, diner, coaches, tavern lounge, and bar lounge car.

The "Broadway Limited" ran from Washington to Chicago with sleepers, coaches, and diner loounge.

The "Sprit of St. Louis" ran from Washington to Kansas City with sleepers, coaches, and diner lounge.

The "George Washington" ran from New Port News and a Washington connection with sleepers, diner lounge, coach, and a coach from Washington.

The "James Whitcomb Riley" from Chicago to Cincinnati with coach, and snack bar coach.

Train #9 from Chicago to Carbondale ran with coaches and snack bar coach.

Chicago to St. Louis service saw "The Limited" and The "Abraham Limited" ran with coaches, diner lounge, and parlor car.

Chicago to Milwaukee service ran with coaches, and cafe-lounges.

The "South Wind" ran from Chiago to Miami with coaches, diner-lounge, sleepers, with coaches and sleepers to St. Petersburg, Fla.

The "city of New Orleans" ran from Chicago to New Orleans with coaches, diner-lounge-counter, and coach from Chicago to Jackson, Miss.

The "Texas Chief" ran from Chicago to Houston with coaches, diner lounge, diner, and sleeper.

The "Super Chief-ElCapitan" ran from Chicago to Los Angeles with coaches, lounges, diners, and sleepers.

The "Denver Zephyr" and "California Zephyr" combination ran from Chicago to Oakland. Coach-dome Chicago to Oakland, coffee shop dome from Chicago to Oakland, diner from Chicago to Oakland, sleepers from Chicago to Oakland, and an obervation lounge from Chicago to Oakland, coaches from Chicago to Denver, sleepers from Chicago to Denver, slumber-coach from Chicago to Denver.

The"Empire Builder" fom Chicago to Seattle with coaches-dome, lounge-dome, diner, sleepers, lounge snack bar, and slumber coach.

The "Sunset" from New Orleans to Los Angeles tri- weekly with sleepers, diner, lounge, and coaches.

Train #99 from Oakland to Los Angeles with coaches, food service and lounge ran on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Train #11 from Seattle to Los Angeles and San Diego with coaches, diner, lounge, and sleepers.

Daily two train service from Seattle to Portland with coaches, and lounge-snack car.

Two daily trains from Los Angeles to San Diego with coaches and lounge cars.

Typical coach fare from New York to Miami was one-way $59.01.
