This is the September 29, 1946 timetable for the Norfolk and Western Railway. Shown on the front cover is Virginia's Natural Bridge.

While the Norfolk and Western offered passenger service they were primarily a coal hauling railroad.

All sleeping cars were 12 section, 1 drawing room unless stated different.

Train #1, ran from New York to Roanoke with sleepers from New York to Roanoke(10 sections, 3 double bedrooms), New York to Roanoke, coaches from Harrisburg to Roanoke, dining car from Shenandoah to Roanoke.

Train #3, "The Pocahontas" ran from Norfolk to Cincinnati with sleepers from Norfolk to Chicago-via PRR #215 from Cincinnati(12 section, lounge car), Norfolk to Roanoke, Richmond to Bristol,via ACL #33 from Richmond to Petersburg, Richmond to Roanoke, New York to Williamson(10 section, 1 compartment, 1 drawing room), coaches from Norfolk to Cincinnati, Norfolk to Columbus via #35 Portsmouth to Columbus, dining car from Roanoke to Cincinnati.

Train #15, "The Cavalier" ran from Norfolk to Cincinnati with sleepers from Norfolk to Cincinnati(10 section lounge car), Norfolk to Roanoke, Richmond to Bristol via ACL #33 Richmond to Petersburg, Richmond to Roanoke, New York to Williamson(10 section, 1 compartment, 1 drawing room), coaches from Norfolk to Cincinnati, Norfolk to Columbus via #35 Portsmouth to Columbus, dining car from Roanoke to Cincinnati.

Train #17, "The Birmingham Special" ran from New York to Birmingham with sleepers from New York to Birmingham(8 sections, 5 double bedrooms), New York to Knoxville, New York to Chattanooga, Washington to Memphis(8 section restaurant car), Washington to Birmingham, coaches from Washington to Birmingham and Memphis, dining car from Washington to Roanoke, Knoxville to Birmingham. This was primarily a Southern Railway train that ran via the N&W from Monroe, Virginia to Bristol, Virginia. This train ran with steam engines on the N&W and diesel on the Southern.

Train #21, "Cannon Ball", ran from Norfolk to New York with a sleeper from Norfolk to New York(10 secions, 2 compartments, drawing room), coaches from Norfolk to Richmond. This was not the famous Cannon Ball train of song.

Train #21(Winston-Salem District), ran from Cincinnati to Winston-Salem with a sleeper(10 sections, 3 double bedrooms)--via N&W #4 from Cincinnati to Roanoke, coaches Roanoke to Winston-Salem.

Train #23, ran from Norfolk to Columbus-Cincinnati and Norfolk to Washington with coaches only.

Train #25, "The Powhatan Arrow"--streamlined train--ran from Norfolk to Cincinnati with coaches Norfolk to Cincinnati(reserved seats only), tavern-lounge car from Norfolk to Cincinnati, dining car from Norfolk to Cincinnati.

Train #41, "New York, Chattanooga, New Orleans Limited"--primarily a Southern Railway train that ran from Monroe, Virginia to Bristol, Virginia on the N&W, ran from New York to New Orleans with sleepers from New York to New Orleans(10 sections, 1 compartment, 2 drawing rooms), New York to Shreveport, New York to Bristol(10 sections, 2 drawing rooms), New York to Williamson(10 sections, 1 compartment, 1 drawing room), Washington to New Orleans(10 section lounge) Washington to Roanoke, Richmond to Bristol--via the ACL #33, Chattanooga to New Orleans, coaches, Washington to New Orleans, dining car Roanoke to Birmingham.

Train #45, "The Tennessean"--a primarily Southern Railway train that ran on the N&W from Monroe, Virginia to Bristol, Virginia. Ran from New York to Memphis with sleepers from New York to Memphis(10 sections, 3 double bedrooms), Washington to Nashville--via NC&StL #4 Chattanooga to Nashville, Knoxville to Memphis, Chattanooga to Memphis, tavern observation car from Washington to Memphis, dining car from Washington to Chattanooga. Streamlined train.

LOCAL SERVICE THROUGHOUT THE N&W SYSTEM

All trains consisted of mostly one or two coaches and headend traffic. Mixed trains consisted of one coach and some freight cars.
