This is the Southern Railway System public timetable for June 1, 1971. The Southern continued to operate their own passenger trains as a private enterprise rather than join Amtrak.

Train #5, The Piedmont, ran from Washington to Atlanta with coaches and bar-food service.

Train #1,The Southern Crescent, ran from New York to Birmingham (daily) and New York to New Orleans (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays) with a dining car Washington to Atlanta or New Orleans, tavern-lounge car from Washington to Atlanta, parlor-dome car Atlanta to New Orleans(three days a week), coaches from Washington to Birmingham, Washington to Atlanta, New York to Birmingham or New Orleans, sleepers from Washinton to Atlanta, New York to Birmingham, New York to Los Angeles(three times a week).

Train #7, coaches only from Washington to Lynchburg, Va.

Train #3, coaches only from Salisbury to Asheville, N.C.
