A baby ostrich taking a rest after a hard time pecking
his way out of the egg...
These baby ostriches are usually less than one week old.
They are kept away from the older ostriches as they are
too weak to defense themselves. This way, we can monitor
their health and development closer this way. At this age,
they are quite timid and would be very alert to the
surrounding.
When the chicks are more than one week old so they are
transfer into the open field to allow them to run around
more freely. They are very curious creatures and if you
walk pass them, they will tend to follow you around.
Cute fellows...
Incubations
As mentioned previously, the eggs in our farm can't be
hatched naturally as the weather is too unpredicated in
Malaysia or any SEAsia countries, we put the eggs in an
incubation machine. Each machine can contained up to
18 eggs and they are rotated every 1hr to allow better
vendilation in the eggs.
Ostrich Mating
These are photos on how ostriches mate. The males one
are those with the black and white feathers. During
mating, they will be the ones on top of the females. one
male usually have up to 3-5 females.
Ostrich Rides
Right now, in our farm, we had trained a few birds for
riding, but in order to ride an ostrich, it required very strong
arms and legs power to grab and balance himself on the
bird. As ostrich has only 2 legs and a long thin neck, which
made it different for the rider to grab on, unlike 4 legged
animal like horses. While riding on the ostrich, the rider had
to grab on to its wings.
