Music D Day of the Drowned

DAM - Purity: The Darwinian Paradox [CD/2005] 8/10=A seriously cool young death metal band out of the UK, not to be confused with the old thrash band D.A.M. also from the UK. Very unique approach, the potential here is limitless.
DAM - The Difference Engine [CD/2007] 8/10=Another fascinating journey from this very interesting UK band, death and thrash, progressive, dense and atmospheric all at the same time.

DANZIG - Danzig [CD/1988] 10/10=Motherfucking perfect dark rock and roll.
DANZIG - II Lucifuge [CD/1990] 9/10=A natural sequel to the first album, not as perfect throughout but nearly.
DANZIG - III How the Gods Kill [CD/1992] 8/10=It's really good but at this point he can't top the debut.
DANZIG - Black Aria [DVD56/1992] 8/10=Pretty cool dark soundscapes, obviously nothing much to do with his rock band. More like a Mortiis, before Mortiis.
DANZIG - 4p [CD/1994] 8/10=I enjoyed the dark moody atmosphere here, and he tries some different stuff.

DARK ANGEL - We Have Arrived [CD/1985] 5/10=A nice introduction to this band, but doesn't hold up well.
DARK ANGEL - Darkness Descends [CD/1986] 7/10=A mighty and dark American thrash album, one of the earliest and best at the time.
DARK ANGEL - Leave Scars [CD/1989] 8/10=Wow...this is a really good album...it can get boring after awhile because the songs are long and the lyrics are many, but it's damned impressive for what it is.
DARK ANGEL - Live Scars [CD/1990] 1/10=Four songs we already have, recorded live in pretty poor quality? Your dick is hurting my ass you corporate fucks.
DARK ANGEL - Time Does Not Heal [CD/1991] 8/10=The strength of this album is its clarity of riffing and more diverse elements than the last one, and it's still just as good.

DARK FORTRESS - Tales from Eternal Dusk [DVD98/2001] 6/10=It's your pretty typical melodic black metal with that late 90s style, hybrid melodeath riffs under black metal vocals. Their weakest album, but not bad.
DARK FORTRESS - Profane Genocidal Creations [DVD98/2003] 8/10=A great sophomore album from the Germans, may not be at the high point of Stab Wounds but it's quite worth hearing if you like black metal with riffs to it.
DARK FORTRESS - Stab Wounds [CD/2004] 9/10=Amazing third album, this is actually my favorite Dark Fortress record, diverse, well-balanced, and dark as all hell.
DARK FORTRESS - Seance [CD/2006] 8/10=Quite good, this is a German black metal band that is not afraid to experiment, there are industrial and ambient segways in these songs that work really well within the grim black attack.
DARK FORTRESS - Eidolon [CD/2008] 9/10=A fucking superb album of German black aggression, these guys are basically at the top of the game. A must hear band.

DARK FUNERAL - Dark Funeral [CD/1994] 6/10=The prelude EP to a career of unforgiving Swedish black metal, you find the trendy melodies of that scene in this band.
DARK FUNERAL - The Secrets of the Black Arts [CD/1996] 7/10=Flawless, precision black metal, solid execution, but not my favorite Dark Funeral as you can tell by the score.
DARK FUNERAL - Vobiscum Satanas [CD/1998] 8/10=They represent to me the most generic precepts of Satanic black metal, but they perform this so well that I can't help but enjoy their material immensely.
DARK FUNERAL - Teach Children to Worship Satan [CD/2000] 5/10=It's 'cool' to put out an EP with a new song and then some cover tunes to get a few extra bucks from your fans, but Dark Funeral have done it as well as anyone.
DARK FUNERAL - Diabolis Interium [CD/2002] 9/10=A titanic force of nature, when I put this on it blew me out of my chair, about 15-20' in reverse until I was stopped by a plaster/wood wall. One of the best BM albums in recent memory.
DARK FUNERAL - De Profundis Clamavi Ad Te Domine [CD/2004] 3/10=Every time a black metal band releases a live show LP, a part of me is murdered, a part of black metal is murdered, and hell is getting even more bored.
DARK FUNERAL - Attera Totus Sanctus [CD/2005] 9/10=Looks like this new improved Dark Funeral is here to stay, I must have listened to this album about 10x already and I just acquired it. Sick and memorable Swedish black metal.

DARK TRANQUILLITY - A Moonclad Reflection [CD/????] 1/10=Crappy sounding demo.
DARK TRANQUILLITY - Skydancer/Of Chaos and Eternal Night [CD/1993-95] 7/10=The first album and an EP by this influential, melodic Swedish death metal band, and its some good groundbreaking stuff.
DARK TRANQUILLITY - The Gallery [CD/1995] 7/10=Took me a few listens before I realized just why so many people enjoyed this album, it's quite good.
DARK TRANQUILLITY - Enter Suicidal Angels [CD/1996] 3/10=An EP with a song or two not on any albums, and a techno remix.
DARK TRANQUILLITY - The Mind's I [CD/1997] 6/10=At first I thought this album kind of blew but it gets better on repeated spins.
DARK TRANQUILLITY - Projector [CD/1999] 7/10=This is an interesting shift, with more clean vocals and diversity of songwriting.
DARK TRANQUILLITY - Haven [CD/2000] 6/10=The roots are laid here for the sound on Damage Done, but Haven ends up being a bit boring, not at all bad.
DARK TRANQUILLITY - Damage Done [CD/2002] 10/10=Emotional, laden with amazing hooks, and just about perfect in every way, with a nice production sheen that isn't too uber-studio, this is the band's crowning moment and best album.
DARK TRANQUILLITY - Exposures in Retrospect and Denial [CDx2/2004] 6/10=An unusually cool compilation because it has a lot of unreleased material, and unreleased material that's actually quite good.
DARK TRANQUILLITY - Lost to Apathy [CD/2004] 2/10=One track from Character, one remix of a track from Character, one live tune, and one non-album track. I'll score it two points.
DARK TRANQUILLITY - Character [CD/2005] 8/10=This is a sick album, no doubt, it's a return to the roots melodic death metal affair, but I was disappointed after their previous effort was so perfect and promising.
DARK TRANQUILLITY - Fiction [CD/2007] 9/10=By Jove they've done it again. Took a few spins before it all settled with me, in the end I enjoyed this more than Character but not as much as Damage Done.
DARK TRANQUILLITY - A Closer End [DVD128/2008] 4/5=Pretty cool fan package, with unreleased tunes, covers, etc.

DARKANE - Rusted Angel [CD/1998] 9/10=Vicious melodic Swedish death/thrash, and a damned fine album with a pretty unique, distant production.
DARKANE - Insanity [CD/2001] 7/10=At first I thought this boring, but the more I listen, the more I like.
DARKANE - Expanding Senses [CD/2002] 7/10=Again, the very cool production of this band makes it memorable after repeated listens.
DARKANE - Layers of Lies [CD/2005] 9/10=Kickass, harkens right back to the first album in terms of style and sound, this is one of the best of the entire Sweden melodeath/thrash posse, and one that will be remembered.
DARKANE - Demonic Art [CD/2008] 7/10=It's no Rusted Angel and it's no Layers of Lies, but it's another good Darkane record.

DARKENED NOCTURN SLAUGHTERCULT - The Pest Called Humanity [DVD39/1999] 3/5=Unrelenting evil on the debut EP, though I greatly prefer the full-lengths.
DARKENED NOCTURN SLAUGHTERCULT - Follow the Calls for Battle [DVD39/2001] 8/10=The debut full-length from one of the very best of the German black metal bands.
DARKENED NOCTURN SLAUGHTERCULT/DONKELHEET - Split [DVD39/2003] 3/5=One tune from Darkened Nocturn Slaugtercult, and one from Luxembourg's Donkelheet.
DARKENED NOCTURN SLAUGHTERCULT - Nocturnal March [CD/2004] 9/10=Unjesus fucking unchrist, lords of hell below, I cut my wrists and let my blood flow to thy sickness....SICK CRAZY FUCKING GERMAN BLACK METAL. HORNS UP.
DARKENED NOCTURN SLAUGHTERCULT - Hora Nocturna [CD/2006] 9/10=How do you not like this unless you are a complete fucking sissy.

DARKSEED - Midnight Solemnly Dance [CD/1996] 7/10=Here are the faster guitars that they wouldn't really return to after Spellcraft, but the catchy goth metal elements are already in place and Stefan's patented grunts.
DARKSEED - Spellcraft [CD/1997] 8/10=There are at least 2-3 super catchy songs on here that mark this as their career album, before they started getting real gothic rock on the later stuff.
DARKSEED - Give Me Light [CD/1999] 7/10=I had half-hoped this would be one of the greatest metal albums of my life, but it was simply good. Goth rock with Stefan's vocals in their usual emotional delivery. Not bad.
DARKSEED - Diving Into Darkness [CD/2000] 6/10=As far as solid, simplistic gothic metal is concerned, you couldn't go wrong with this album. At the very least it should have brought them more commercial attention.
DARKSEED - Astral Adventures [CD/2003] 7/10=Not bad at all, all the tracks on here are pretty catchy, I think it's a better album than Diving Into Darkness on the whole.
DARKSEED - Ultimate Darkness [CD/2005] 5/10=I've always followed this band, even in their more commercial goth rock direction. The problem here is the amount of generic riffs, although more death vocals like in the old days is nice.

DARKTHRONE - Land of Frost [CD/1988] 1/10=This, their first death metal demo would have been a lot better if one could actually hear it...
DARKTHRONE - Cromlech [CD/1989] 3/10=Death metal demo #2 is an improvement, certainly in the sound department...pretty good, grim death stuff.
DARKTHRONE - Thulcandra [CD/1989] 4/10=Another pretty good demo with three tracks.
DARKTHRONE - Soulside Journey [CD/1991] 7/10=Ever find it amusing that the greatest black metal band ever didn't even start as black metal? Quality, evil death metal, at times I'm sad they didn't continue along this path...but...
DARKTHRONE - A Blaze in the Northern Sky [CD/1991] 10/10=It is my opinion that this album essentially created the field of grim, cult black metal. A classic of the highest order, and herald of more than a decade of darkness to follow.
DARKTHRONE - Under a Funeral Moon [CD/1993] 9/10=Perhaps a bit less inspired by Celtic Frost and Bathory than its predecessor, some loathe this album but for myself it's another timeless epic of evil, cold as ever.
DARKTHRONE - Transylvanian Hunger [CD/1994] 10/10=More mid-range in the mix, these are the sounds of night...of hopeless abandon...and cold, grim, Nordic landscape...atop mountains, deep in the woodlands where the wicked play.
DARKTHRONE - Panzerfaust [CD/1995] 9/10=Another classic, albeit the slightly higher production value, they lose little of that evil vibe they so strive for...a LOT of Celtic Frost worship returns on this one, fucking sick motherfuckers.
DARKTHRONE - Total Death [CD/1996] 9/10="The envy of loosers we piss on" just about sums it up, this is their Bathory album, essentially, but still timeless.
DARKTHRONE - Goatlord [CD/1996] 8/10=The rehearsal sessions for what was to be their 2nd full length album after Soulside Journey, and yet still capturing the dark unbeating heart of this amazing cult band...
DARKTHRONE - Ravishing Grimness [CD/1999] 10/10=Few things in this worthless existence are more perfect than a Darkthrone record...this only proves why...other bands try to be evil...some try hard, but this band simply IS.
DARKTHRONE - Plaguewielder [CD/2001] 9/10=One of the rare DT albums with color packaging and higher production value, but there is no color in this music, it cuts straight to the marrow with ravenous grim splendor.
DARKTHRONE - Hate Them [CD/2003] 10/10=Ten albums deep now, and this band has never lost sight of their goal, they must be either the least or most pretentious heavy metal band in history, and again they are perfect for my ears...
DARKTHRONE - Sardonic Wrath [CD/2004] 10/10=At least when I die I will have known just how cold and uncaring this fucking world is. Hail Darkthrone, 100% pure black metal.
DARKTHRONE - Too Old, Too Cold [CD/2006] 7/10=This is NOT punk, despite what you hear, it's just Darkthrone doing a more straightforward , oldschool metal approach, and it still fucking rules. 4-song EP teaser.
DARKTHRONE - The Cult is Alive [CD/2006] 9/10=This band is incapable of ever lacking my compulsion to listen to their music repeatedly. Another big score for the greatest black metal band in the world.
DARKTHRONE - Forebyggende King [CD/2007] 4/10=Well if you want all things Darkthrone, it's got a nice raw new tune and a cover of a Testors song.
DARKTHRONE - NWOBHM [CD/2007] 5/5=The new wave of black heavy metal indeed, killer fucking EP.
DARKTHRONE - F.O.A.D. [CD/2007] 9/10=Although they have continued along with this 'goofy' new Darkthrone evolution, more tongue in cheek and a little less dismal than their classics, the new disc still kicks major ass.
DARKTHRONE - The Frostland Tapes [CDx3/2008]

DAWN - Naer Solen Gar Nider for Evogher [DVD128/1994] 8/10=This was a fantastic melodic Swedish black metal album in its day, of course you can get their entie discography on Crown of the Triarchy.
DAWN - Crown of the Triarchy [CDx2/2004] 8/10=A great package gives an extra point, this is Dawn's entire discography on two discs, from their death metal roots demos to their great black metal releases, all in one place!

DEAD END - Dead Line [CD/1986] 7/10=Pretty damn good Japanese band, they had a glam image but their music was melodic speed metal, they probably would appeal to both crowds and were a precursor to the visual kei rock style.
DEAD END - Ghost of Romance [CD/1987] 8/10=Yet another great Japanese metal band from the 80s, they had a bunch of albums but I only got two, and only on vinyl. I love the song 'Phantom Nation' among others. Great material.
DEAD END - Shambara [CD/1988] 7/10=A little more diverse than the past records, but that doesn't make it bad, the metal Dead End still shines through with splendor on several tracks.
DEAD END - Zero [CD/1989] 5/10=They embraced their image more here, this has much more of a pop tendency and it is clearly their weakest, they broke up not long afterwards and that is probably a good thing. Few okay songs.

DEAD SILENT SLUMBER - Entombed in the Midnight Hour [CD/1999] 7/10=It doesn't have a lot of replay value, but this is Jens Ryden of Naglfar's solo band and frankly I enjoy it more than Naglfar. Go ahead and shoot me.

DEATH - Scream Bloody Gore [CD/1987] 9/10=One of the albums responsible for death metal, and it's great even to this day.
DEATH - Leprosy [CD/1988] 10/10=After Consuming Impulse by Pestilence, this is probably my favorite death metal record. Simply perfect, with evil, catchy riffs, the way Death should have stayed.
DEATH - Spiritual Healing [CD/1990] 9/10=I love this album too, it's got a cleaner production than the first two which signaled the changes to come.
DEATH - Human [CD/1991] 5/10=It's competent, well-played, and progressive. But it just doesn't have the catchy, great, timeless songs like the first three albums.
DEATH - Individual Thought Patterns [CD/1993] 6/10=This one is also progressive but manages to re-institute some of their early greatness.
DEATH - Symbolic [CD/1995] 8/10=The best of their progressive death metal albums, enjoyable from beginning to end.
DEATH - The Sound of Perseverance [CD/1998] 6/10=Took me years before I finally enjoyed this, much of this music would have gone better with Control Denied, Chuck's side project, but now I think of it as a passable album.

DEATH ANGEL - The Ultra-Violence [CD/1987] 9/10=Evil, excellent, the best album by far by these guys. Had they just packed it in after this, they would have been legend.
DEATH ANGEL - Frolic Through the Park [CD/1988] 6/10=Does not hold up well to time, but was interesting when it first came out. The Kiss cover rocks, not much else.
DEATH ANGEL - Act III [CD/1990] 6/10=Hard for me to judge, it's very radio friendly and radio produced, but still packs in some catchy songs.
DEATH ANGEL - The Art of Dying [CD/2004] 6/10=Another 'comeback' album, metal is cool again so old bands reform to reap the rewards, fairweather bastards. Some of my friends love this but I got only a little enjoyment out of it, it's not that great.
DEATH ANGEL - Archives and Artefacts [CDx3/2005] 3/10=It's got the first two albums, remastered with bonus tracks, as well as a 3rd disc with demos, and a DVD to boot. Fans only. Worth it only for the remasters and demos.
DEATH ANGEL - Killing Season [DVD111/2008] 5/10=Didn't get into this one at all, the best days of Death Angel are long behind them.

DEATH BREATH - Stinking Up the Night [CD/2006] 8/10=A great project from members of Entombed and Runemagick, oldschool rocking death metal ala Autopsy and the entire Swedish scene from back in the day. And I mean VERY oldschool.
DEATH BREATH - Let It Stink [DVD59/2007] 4/5=Nice follow-up EP to the debut, includes a cover of GBH and a cover of Bathory.

DEATHROW (DE) - Riders of Doom [CD/1986] 5/10=Messy, raw German thrash metal...hints of some good music here but weak on the delivery.
DEATHROW (DE) - Raging Steel [CD/1987] 6/10=Better than the debut, but still quite sloppy, especially considering what would come next...
DEATHROW (DE) - Deception Ignored [CD/1989] 10/10=What drugs could do this? Seriously...this is probably the most underrated thrash album in history...eerie vocals, complex riffs that are almost like a thrash orchestra...a masterpiece in every sense of the word.
DEATHROW (DE) - Towers in Darkness [DVD101/1992] 4/5=The title track is on Life Beyond, plus two other tunes that are not...and both of those tunes are pretty cool. Mine is only a vinyl rip with hissy sounds. :(
DEATHROW (DE) - Life Beyond [CD/1992] 7/10=A fine album with some great riffs and all, but quite disappointing in the wake of a classic like Deception Ignored. Sadly, they'd toss in the towel after this.

DEATHSPELL OMEGA - Infernal Battles [DVD68/2000] 8/10=Total black fucking evil from the French masters of the form.
DEATHSPELL OMEGA - Inquisitors of Satan [CD/2003] 7/10=Pretty badass kvlt French black metal, I enjoyed it and that their riffs were in places similar to Darkthrone, Burzum, and the mighty Rakun.
DEATHSPELL OMEGA - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice [CD/2004] 9/10=I would dare to say that this album verges on brilliance, it's far better than Inquisitors of Satan and in places it's quite unique.
DEATHSPELL OMEGA - Kenose [CD/2005] 7/10=Only three songs on this, but still clocks in at over 35 minutes. Another promising outing from this French black/death monstrosity, sounding like no other, check them out.
DEATHSPELL OMEGA - Fas Ite Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum [CD/2007] 10/10=A monumental musical offering, the absolute pinnacle of French black metal thus far: avant-garde, wondrous, eternal. Album of the year contender.
DEATHSPELL OMEGA - Manifestations 2000-2001 [DVD120/2008] 5/5=Great fan package that collects some material from splits and a track from a various artist compilation.
DEATHSPELL OMEGA - Manifestations 2002 [DVD120/2008] 5/5=Another crushing, amazing fan package. This is post-Inquisitors of Satan material, and it rules.

DECAPITATED - Winds of Creation [CD/2000] 10/10=Motherfucking amazing death metal, considering how young they were at the time. Every song rules here, even the Slayer cover.
DECAPITATED - The First Damned [CD/2000] 3/10=Demos and shit you probably already have.
DECAPITATED - Nihility [CD/2001] 8/10=This is great too, but much simpler and more accessible and 'moshy' than the first album.
DECAPITATED - The Negation [CD/2004] 8/10=Another fine album, similar style to Nihility.
DECAPITATED - Organic Hallucinations [CD/2006] 8/10=Their most technical record since the debut, but lacking the strong songs of that. Still...this is a wrecking ball of an album you'd do well to check out. New singer.
DECAPITATED - Live Nottingham [CD/2006] 4/10=Bonus live disc that comes with the limited edition of Organic Hallucinations. Sounds crushing and sick, and I liked that the disc is designed to look like a CDr.

DECEASED - Luck of the Corpse [CD/1992] 8/10=Classic filthy metal with thrash undertones on the debut album, these guys know metal and they fucking love metal.
DECEASED - The Blueprints for Madness [CD/1995] 8/10=An excellent band, a filthy union of death, thrash and even some hardcore elements at times, but tasteful.
DECEASED - Fearless Undead Machines [CD/1997] 9/10=A great record, recalling early thrash/speed influences and adding a nice horror film theme with some great samples. I sold their other CDs and need to get them again :(~
DECEASED - Supernatural Addiction [CD/2000] 8/10=More melodic than Fearless Undead Machines, but still classy, love the kitschy supernatural lyrical themes and it's yet another solid album under Fowley's collective belt.
DECEASED - Behind the Mourner's Veil [CD/2001] 7/10=Three new Deceased tracks, plus covers of Tankard, Warfare, Anthrax and D.R.I. Not a bad package, both the originals and covers sound great.
DECEASED - The Radiation Years [CD/2002] 5/10=A fan package with a bunch of demos, pretty good shit for fans of the band's first few records.
DECEASED - Corpses, Souls & Other Strangeness [CD/2003] 8/10=An excellent package, you get their great 'Luck of the Corpse' record, 'The Thirteen Frightened Souls' EP and four bonus tracks, all great music.
DECEASED - As the Weird Travel On [CD/2005] 8/10=Individually the riffs may not all be very original, but Deceased always manage to weave that classy, speed/thrash vibe into their music. As a result, their albums rule.

DECEMBER WOLVES - 'Til Ten Years [CD/1996] 6/10=This was the first REAL black metal band from my area, and though it's not a personal favorite, it is more than competent.
DECEMBER WOLVES - Completely Dehumanized [CD/1998] 9/10=This was local 'street' black metal, with excellent lyrics, please ignore my own personal connection here and just check it out, it really does rule.
DECEMBER WOLVES - Blasterpiece Theatre [CD/2002] 8/10=They sort of dropped the 'street' thing, which I thought was really unique...and went more with horror and porn themes. Still a vicious album, some killer black metal.

DEEP PURPLE - Shades of Deep Purple [CD/1968] 10/10=If there is a better album to get stoned to than this, I really can't think of it offhand...features the big hit cover tune "Hush" with that catchy fucking chorus.
DEEP PURPLE - The Book of Taliesyn [CD/1968] 10/10=This is a more proficient record than the debut in many ways, the production ruled, the tunes ruled...this was one sick acid trip.
DEEP PURPLE - Deep Purple [CD/1969] 9/10=After the pair of masterpieces the year prior, this was just icing on the cake. I don't enjoy it quite as much, but it's still just about as good as sex.
DEEP PURPLE - Concerto for Group and Orchestra [CD/1969] 10/10=Deep Purple and an Orchestra squaring off, in 1969? Sign me up, because this is way ahead of its time and the results were beyond unearthly.
DEEP PURPLE - In Rock [CD/1970] 10/10=It's a damned shame that the populace only remembers certain songs from this group, because frankly this band was better than the Beatles. Yes, I said it. Better than the Beatles.
DEEP PURPLE - Fireball [CD/1971] 9/10=Another smash record, with "Demon's Eye", "The Mule" and all sorts of greatness.
DEEP PURPLE - Machine Head [CD/1972] 10/10=One of the most influential albums of all time in both rock and heavy metal music, also has their two biggest hits in "Smoke on the Water" and "Highway Star". Impeccable. Perfect.
DEEP PURPLE - Made in Japan [CD/1972] 4/5=Cool live album recorded in Japan.
DEEP PURPLE - Who Do We Think We Are [CD/1973] 8/10=When you think about just how heavy this band was, it's pretty impressive. Another great record but Machine Head would have been impossible to follow up.
DEEP PURPLE - Burn [CD/1974] 8/10=In comes David Coverdale to replace Ian Gillan, and with him comes this huge funk and soul injection, doesn't weaken Purple all that much, still a very good listen.
DEEP PURPLE - Stormbringer [CD/1974] 9/10=This was my favorite of the Deep Purple albums with Coverdale on vocals, it's even funkier than Burn and it's the last with Ritchie Blackmore but I love it.
DEEP PURPLE - Come Taste the Band [CD/1975] 7/10=Coverdale goes off with the vocals on this record, no doubt, but musically I don't appreciate it as much as the excellent Stormbringer, it's a lot brighter and happier.

DEKAPITATOR - We Will Destroy...You Will Obey [CD/1999]
DEKAPITATOR - The Storm Before the Calm [CD/2007] 9/10=Amazing retro thrash, sounds very much like Razor, band features members of Exhumed, Repulsion, etc.

DEMIGOD - Slumber of Sullen Eyes [CD/1992] 8/10=The fucking Finns had Demilich, and they had Demigod too, and although this isn't quite as good, it's crushing death metal and one of the better albums in this style, ever.
DEMIGOD - Shadow Mechanics [CD/2002]
DEMIGOD - Let Chaos Prevail [CD/2007] 9/10=Amazing 3rd album, totally riff-tastic, and well worth the wait.

DEMILICH - Nespithe [CD/1993] 9/10=This is truly a gem, a rare groovy, jazzy Finnish death metal band that made this one album and called it a day. Amazing stuff, great and lengthy song titles, froglike rumbling vocals, and riffs that jerk your metal mental.

DEMIURG (SWE) - Breath of the Demiurg [CD/2007] 9/10=Amazing oldschool death metal with great production ala members of Ribspreader & Bloodbath. Yep, Dan Swano is here on drums, great fucking tunes, great new album.
DEMIURG (SWE) - The Hate Chamber [CD/2008] 8/10=It's not as good as Breath of the Demiurg, but if you love your crunching all-star Swedish old school death metal then it's still a required pick-up.

DEMONICAL - Servants of the Unlight [CD/2007] 10/10=Amazing, brutal, excellent Swedish death metal, from members of Centinex. Flawless and destructive.

DEMONOID - Riders of the Apocalypse [CD/2004] 9/10=A great and diverse album of melodic death/thrash from members of Therion and Soilwork, chalk full of catchy riffs and impressive solo-work.

DEPECHE MODE - Speak and Spell [CD/1981] 6/10=Really early synth pop from these guys, and it sounds it...still I must give credit for their hugely influential style which is at times even evident on this album.
DEPECHE MODE - A Broken Frame [CD/1982] 7/10=Already we're seeing a slightly darker, more morose Depeche Mode, and that's a good thing. This is pretty good for 1982, as synth technology improves, so will they.
DEPECHE MODE - Construction Time Again [CD/1983] 8/10=Slightly better again than A Broken Frame, you can't tell me 'More Than a Party' alone didn't inspire a fuckton of lame gothic synth/rock/pop bands. 'Everything Counts' rules.
DEPECHE MODE - Some Great Reward [CD/1984] 8/10=Another solid synth pop album with the hits like 'People are People', slightly more of an industrial sound here at places, surprisingly.
DEPECHE MODE - Black Celebration [CD/1986] 7/10=I don't like much of this album, but it has 'Stripped' and a few other kickass tunes that bring the overall score up.
DEPECHE MODE - Music for the Masses [CD/1987] 8/10=Not really a bad song in the bunch here, and 'Sacred' is one of my faves by them. One of their strongest albums overall.
DEPECHE MODE - Violator [CD/1990] 9/10=The peak of their Career, not just a great Depeche Mode CD but a great pop CD in general...who could forget 'Enjoy the Silence' or 'Policy of Truth', or the swagger of 'Personal Jesus'?
DEPECHE MODE - 101 [CDx2/1990] 1/10=Corporate cocksucking whores, give us music we already have, give it to us! At least it comes with 2 discs.
DEPECHE MODE - Songs of Faith & Devotion [CD/1993] 7/10=They enjoyed the success of 'Personal Jesus', so it was only natural for another bluesy swagger song 'I Feel You'. Sexy. The rest of the album is pretty good also.
DEPECHE MODE - Ultra [CD/1997] 7/10=Their most modern sounding album, still quite good stuff even by 1997, what a strong pop band, eh?
DEPECHE MODE - Exciter [CD/2001] 6/10=It's okay, but not as good as I would have hoped for a brand new Depeche Mode album, still has some fine moments.
DEPECHE MODE - Playing the Angel [CD/2005] 9/10=Now THIS is what we all wanted to hear out of Exciter, the best Depeche Mode material in 15 years.

DERANGED - Confessions of a Necrophile [DVD39/1992] 2/5=Original demo from the Swedish death metal veterans, did sound like ass though.
DERANGED - The Confessions Continues [DVD39/1993] 3/5=Kind of boring, but better than the original demo.
DERANGED - Architects of Perversions [CD/1994]
DERANGED - Rated X [DVD43/1995] 6/10=At this point, the band wasn't anything special, still a Swedish band that stood out by playing mostly American style death brutality.
DERANGED - High on Blood [CD/1998]
DERANGED - III [DVD43/1999] 7/10=Up to this point, this was my favorite album, great riffs, very groovy and evil.
DERANGED - Deranged [DVD43/2001] 7/10=Brutal like a Swedish Cannibal Corpse.
DERANGED - Sculpture of the Dead [DVD39/1996] 4/5=Cool EP when the band had finally been getting their stride.
DERANGED - Plainfield Cemetary [CD/2002] 8/10=One of Sweden's best American-style brutal death metal bands, they don't follow the classic Swede sound but fall more in line with Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation. Great.
DERANGED - Obscenities in B-Flat [CD/2006] 8/10=Great new deathgrind album from this popular Swedish band, simple and straightforward with great riffs, the songs always take a spin for the catchy.
DERANGED - The Redlight Murder Case [CD/2008] 8/10=Wasn't as entertained here as by the previous two albums at first, but the more I listened the more it has grown and I'd say it's better than Obscenities if only slightly.

DESASTER - A Touch of Medieval Darkness [CD/1996] 7/10=An album compiled of the band's earlier material, they were moving in a more folkish/black direction then, but you could already hear a thrash undercurrent. Good stuff.
DESASTER - Stormbringer [CD/1997] 7/10=Mini-LP with 6 tracks, and quite good tracks they are. This, ladies and gentlemen, was the beginning to something beautiful.
DESASTER - Hellfire's Dominion [CD/1998] 8/10=From the ominous atmosphere of the intro through nine cuts of raging black/speed/thrash, this has that undeniable flair of quality nostalgia.
DESASTER - Tyrants of the Netherworld [CD/2000] 7/10=More of their sloppy blackended thrash metal, you can't help to love this if you are me...but I'll admit it has some shortcomings like boring drums and uneven production.
DESASTER - Divine Blasphemies [CD/2002] 9/10=This is a crusher, oldschool thrash infused death metal that will blow your head off if you possess even an inkling of testosterone.
DESASTER - Brazilian Blitzkrieg Blasphemies [CD/2004] 5/10=Pretty kickass live album, sounds like it was a fun show and Desaster was great on stage. Still not the same as being there...
DESASTER - Angelwhore [CD/2005] 7/10=They finally got a big record deal with Metal Blade, and they put out probably their weakest album yet, though its still quite good speed metal. Was this intentional?
DESASTER - 666: Satan's Soldiers Syndicate [CD/2007] 8/10=A ferocious lashing out, a monolith of pure crispy blackened German thrash metal!

DESIDERII MARGINIS - Songs Over Ruins [CD/1997] 8/10=Amazing dark ambient, truly expresses the emotions of confinement and helplessness, what a soundtrack to my bleak and wary life.
DESIDERII MARGINIS - Deadbeat [CD/2001] 9/10=Desiderii do not disappoint with the sophomore record, in fact this is just so epic in scope, it far supercedes their previous record, which was a journey to itself.
DESIDERII MARGINIS - Strife [CD/2004] 8/10=Took me several rotations to fathom this one, but in the end I did enjoy it a great deal. No words to really describe this, sort of a subtle portrait of human conflict.
DESIDERII MARGINIS - The Ever Green Tree [DVD55/2005] 9/10=Amazing album, this artist is among the best of the dark ambient acts in the world.
DESIDERII MARGINIS - That Which is Tragic and Timeless [CD/2005] 9/10=Another startling piece of work from this fantastic ambient outfit, this one really carries me off to the dark margins of my world.
DESIDERII MARGINIS - Seven Sorrows [CD/2007]

DESTRUCTION - Sentence of Death/Infernal Overkill [CD/1984-85] 8/10=These are of course classics, among my favorite thrash releases ever, but still pretty rough around the edges, so I docked it a few points.
DESTRUCTION - Eternal Devastation/Mad Butcher [CD/1986-87] 9/10=The band here had refined themselves and sound better, and these are just sick songs.
DESTRUCTION - Release From Agony [CD/1989] 8/10=A solid album for Destruction although it isn't their best work.
DESTRUCTION - Live Without Sense [CD/1989] 5/10=As far as live albums go, this was one of the better to ever exist. These guys seem to be consistently good in that setting.
DESTRUCTION - Cracked Brain [CD/1990] 7/10=This one was reviled by many people but I enjoy some of the very unique technical riff patterns on some of the songs, I could just do without the retarded cover of 'My Sharona'.
DESTRUCTION - Destruction [DVD145/1995] 2/5=This EP is without Schmier on vocals, the new singer tried but the songs just weren't great here.
DESTRUCTION - Them Not Me [DVD145/1995] 3/5=This is actually better than the s/t EP, but not by much. Among the worst of Destruction's releases.
DESTRUCTION - The Least Successful Human Cannonball [CD/1998] 5/10=One of their records without Schmier, there are still lots of great guitar riffs but it is the vocals that kill this album, they are absolutely terrible.
DESTRUCTION - All Hell Breaks Loose [CD/2000] 8/10=The 'comeback' album for Destruction, even though they had been carrying on in some form all along. This is a great try, with some good tunes, but the next one...
DESTRUCTION - The Antichrist [CD/2001] 10/10=The masters have returned, this is perhaps the best produced thrash album ever. And every fucking song rocks.
DESTRUCTION - Metal Discharge [CD/2003] 8/10=An enjoyable album but certainly lacks the amazing production and riff-for-riff perfection of The Antichrist, I think they just worked themselves too hard after such a long absence.
DESTRUCTION - Alive Devastation [CD/2003] 5/5=It's a live album from one of the greatest bands the world has ever known. Pushing the boundaries of live albums everywhere.
DESTRUCTION - Inventor of Evil [CD/2005] 8/10=Another solid new Destruction record, sort of like the songwriting level of Metal Discharge but with the production of All Hell Breaks Loose and The Antichrist. Cheers.
DESTRUCTION - Thrash Anthems [CD/2006] 9/10=They have successfully recorded some of their classic tunes with a modern production, and they sound amazing. Also there are some new tracks. Excellent record for all thrash fans.
DESTRUCTION - D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N. [CD/2008] 7/10=It's probably the least powerful album since their comeback started earlier this century, but its still a solid, thrashing effort.

DETENTE - Recognize No Authority [CD/1986] 9/10=Kickass album by Dawn Crosby and crew, before she went on to Fear of God and then died. An awesome thrash/classic metal record with her sick and sweet vocals, fuck you Angela Arch Enemy.

DETONATION - An Epic Defiance [CD/2003] 8/10=Dutch melodeath, quite good at this style in fact.
DETONATION - Portals to Uphobia [CD/2005] 8/10=A great sophomore effort, but it didn't quite trump the debut.
DETONATION - Emission Phase [CD/2007] 9/10=Amazing, blazing melodic death/thrash from this Dutch band, far more impressive than any of their past material.

DEVASTATION - Signs of Life [CD/1989] 8/10=An excellent technical thrash record, the vocals just seem to fit a lot better here with the more frantic chaos of the guitar riffs.
DEVASTATION - Idolatry [CD/1991] 7/10=Slight letdown for me after Signs of Life was so good, but still a worthwhile record that improves with repeated spins.

DEW-SCENTED - Symbolisation [CD/1994] 5/10=The demo by this death-thrash band, had a much rougher sound, vocals reminded me a lot of Sepultura, not bad at all and a very crushing production.
DEW-SCENTED - Immortelle [CD/1996] 7/10=Let me be frank, this band have never done anything brilliant or completely memorable, but their output has been consistent and crushing speed/thrash/death for years.
DEW-SCENTED - Innoscent [CD/1998] 6/10=And they were doing this stuff long before any retro-thrash really set in, this album is a little weaker and has some more melodeath elements, otherwise still pretty cool.
DEW-SCENTED - Ill-Natured [CD/1999] 7/10=Always though their name didn't quite fit their playing style, but hey, who cares, this is another cool record.
DEW-SCENTED - Inwards [CD/2002] 7/10=It's retro-thrash metal, clearly similar to the Haunted but a little more exciting, and with a nice crisp production. Still, after you break your neck headbanging to this you'll forget it.
DEW-SCENTED - Impact [CD/2003] 7/10=Ditto man, it's practically the same album as the last one, quality modern thrash metal with the initial excitement of an orgasm but the same lowly afterglow.
DEW-SCENTED - Issue VI [CD/2005] 7/10=What more do I say? This band seems to have shown us their creative plateau, and are content to rest upon it. Intense, angry, pissed off retro-thrash with death metal overtones.
DEW-SCENTED - Incinerate [CD/2007] 9/10=Pretty fucking awesome, great modern thrash record from these German veterans, far better than anything they have released before. All fans of thrash and death must attain.

DIABOLICAL MASQUERADE - Ravendusk In My Heart [CD/1995] 7/10=A fun and quirky debut album from Blackheim, great song titles and solid atmospheric black metal.
DIABOLICAL MASQUERADE - The Phantom Lodge [CD/1997] 8/10=Blackheim improves his style here, this is a great listen throughout.
DIABOLICAL MASQUERADE - Nightwork [CD/1998] 8/10=He doesn't record perfect albums, but this guy's talent is enormous and like the earlier records this certainly hints at it.
DIABOLICAL MASQUERADE - Death's Design [CD/2001] 7/10=A curious symphonic metal soundtrack arrangement, there are amazing tunes here but it's muddled up by having too many tracks.

DIAMOND HEAD - Lightning to the Nations [CD/1980] 9/10=Quite an amazing metal record for its day, I don't think there is a song on this classic that I don't enjoy. Killer early NWOBHM, worth its influence.
DIAMOND HEAD - Borrowed Time [CD/1982]
DIAMOND HEAD - Canterbury [DVD69/1983] 8/10=Their third full-length and I personally loved it, some great tunes on here that may not have become classics but really had that awesome NWOBHM style. One of their best.
DIAMOND HEAD - Am I Evil [CD/1987] 4/10=A 9-track compilation of most of their catchier tunes to date, almost seemed like it was marketed as a new album, anyway it's a nice place to start but all released before.
DIAMOND HEAD - Death and Progress [DVD69/1993] 5/10=This just wasn't memorable in the slightest.
DIAMOND HEAD - All Will Be Revealed [DVD69/2005] 6/10=Was their first new full-length in 12 years, it's alright but no legendary stand out tunes like "Am I Evil?".
DIAMOND HEAD - Whats In Your Head [DVD67/2007] 6/10=It's a decent album for Diamond Head in 2007, very heavy metal lite/hard rock, still, their best days are almost 30 years behind them.

DICKINSON, BRUCE - Tattooed Millionaire [CD/1990] 6/10=It's simpler than Maiden, more like straight up rock with that same Dickinson vocal style, and a few of the tracks could have been Maiden songs instead of this solo bullshit.
DICKINSON, BRUCE - Balls to Picasso [CD/1994] 7/10=Quite enjoyable, he was of course out of Maiden by this point...this album has a more psychedelic and often groovy rock vibe, but tracks like 'Cyclops' simply kick butt.
DICKINSON, BRUCE - Skunkworks [CD/1996] 7/10=The lyrics and song titles have a more sci-fi leaning, the music often has a modern Queensryche sound, but it alternates between rock and some light metal and it's not bad.
DICKINSON, BRUCE - Accident of Birth [CD/1997] 8/10=Bruce misses Maiden, so to prepare for the inevitable reunion he streamlines his solo material back to heavy, this could actually be a groovier modern Maiden...
DICKINSON, BRUCE - The Chemical Wedding [CD/1998] 9/10=Damn, an interesting album this is, every song is great and still diverse like his earlier solo albums, and the lyrical theme of alchemy is fascinating. Great album.
DICKINSON, BRUCE - Tyranny of Souls [CD/2005] 9/10=Past seven years he's been doing Maiden, but his recent solo stuff is better than that band's last two albums. Here he is again, delivering a killer album of Bruce.

DIE VERBANNTEN KINDER EVAS - Die Verbannten Kinder Evas [DVD72/1995] 7/10=Side project of Protector from Summoning, it's bombastic synths with sweeping gothic/medieval atmosphere, male/female vox. Pretty cool.
DIE VERBANNTEN KINDER EVAS - Come Heavy Sleep [DVD72/1997] 7/10=If you enjoy acts like Dead Can Dance or Arcana, you could do a lot worse than check out this soaring gothicraft.
DIE VERBANNTEN KINDER EVAS - In Darkness Let Me Dwell [DVD72/1999] 6/10=Maybe it just came off cornier, but I didn't enjoy this quite as much as the first two albums.
DIE VERBANNTEN KINDER EVAS - Dusk and Void Became Alive [DVD72/2006] 8/10=The first offering in seven years but it's probably their most powerful work to date, ethereal, dark and beautiful.

DIES IRAE - Fear of God [DVD7/2004] 4/10=The demo from this great Polish band is not nearly as good as their later full-lengths, it might take some years but this band will be great.
DIES IRAE - Immolated [CD/2000] 8/10=A blistering, impressive debut album by this Polish death metal standby, however their best work is yet to come. I gave two points just for some of the excellent solos.
DIES IRAE - The Sin War [CD/2002] 8/10=Polish death metal band, playing great Polish death metal, with members from other famous Polish death metal bands. All is in order here.
DIES IRAE - Sculpted in Stone [CD/2004] 9/10=Yet another death metal juggernaut crushing its way out of Poland, this is damned powerful stuff with excellent solos and never a dull moment, just go out and get it, it's that good.

DIMENSION ZERO - Penetrations from the Lost World [CD/1996-03] 6/10=Not bad, it's good to see an ex-member of In Flames sticking to his roots with this and a current member joining him. They'll get better.
DIMENSION ZERO - Silent Night Fever [CD/2001] 9/10=Kickass album of melodic death/thrash, although some tracks are stronger than others, this is the band's finest hour by a longshot.
DIMENSION ZERO - This Is Hell [CD/2003] 6/10=It's taken me many listens and it's starting to grow on me, but it's just so bland at first and difficult to discern the talent and melodies for the songs.
DIMENSION ZERO - He Who Shall Not Bleed [CD/2007] 8/10=Amidst all my stage diving off my couch and thrashing up my neck pretty hard, I had to admit that this was a pretty great new album, better than This is Hell.

DIMMU BORGIR - Inn I Evighetens Moerke [DVD3/1994] 4/5=The original Dimmu Borgir debut EP, this is the re-release with the bonus track. It was a blast of what is to come.
DIMMU BORGIR - Stormblast [CD/1995] 8/10=The best album from this Norwegian popular black metal band was this sophomore effort, not sure you need this since it's been re-recorded recently but check out where this material began.
DIMMU BORGIR - Enthrone Darkness Triumphant [CD/1997] 7/10=It was the first of their albums to get them labeled 'Demon Burger', in other words, advanced production, catchier songwriting, etc. Still good.
DIMMU BORGIR - Godless Savage Garden [CD/1997] 3/5=An EP to pass the time between two albums, you get some new tunes, re-recorded old tunes, an Accept cover, and some live tracks. Fans only.
DIMMU BORGIR - For All Tid [CD/1999] 7/10=This is the re-issue of their debut album with bonus tracks, it was good in its day and it's still pretty good.
DIMMU BORGIR - Spiritual Black Dimensions [CD/1999] 6/10=It's solid. It's tight. And for some reason, it is Dimmu's least appealling album...perhaps it just didn't hit me yet.
DIMMU BORGIR - Alive in Torment [DVD3/2001] 2/5=ANd as if the three live tunes on Godless Savage Garden weren't enough (haw haw haw) you get a live EP of 5 songs...like they couldn't have made this a better value. Ripoff.
DIMMU BORGIR - Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia [CD/2001] 7/10=Another solid album and there is a more vicious energy than on the last two, it's still no Stormblast in the songwriting department but it works.
DIMMU BORGIR - World Misanthropy [CD/2001] 3/5=Live EP.
DIMMU BORGIR - Death Cult Armageddon [CD/2003] 7/10=Some fantastic classical/black metal work here, as far as the pure black metal which incorporates most of the album, well produced if not entirely memorable.
DIMMU BORGIR/OLD MAN'S CHILD - Devil's Path/In the Shades of Life [DVD3/2004] 6/10=Re-issue of this split featuring the two great EPs from some of Norway's more notorious black metal acts.
DIMMU BORGIR - Vredesbyrd [DVD3/2004] 1/10=Two-song single, don't waste your time.
DIMMU BORGIR - Stormblast [CD/2005] 9/10=It's Demon Burger's best album re-recorded tastefully with modern production values. Sounds quite good.
DIMMU BORGIR - In Sorte Diaboli [CD/2007] 8/10=After ripping off the 'Imperial March', the Demon Burgers serve up a #666 special, biggie-sized, with a Pepsi. In the grim future there is only corpse paint at Ozzfest.

DISCHARGE - Demo [CD/1977] 6/10=They rule, what can I say? Nine cuts here, from one of the most influential bands ever.
DISCHARGE - Decontrol [CD/1980] 5/10=EP, five points for three Discharge songs. I'll take it.
DISCHARGE - Fight Back [CD/1980] 6/10=Another great EP from Discharge, six points, five songs.
DISCHARGE - Realities of War [CD/1980] 5/10=EP with four songs, for five points.
DISCHARGE - Why? [CD/1981] 7/10=Mini-album, EP type thing, more of that primitive political hardcore punk greatness.
DISCHARGE - Never Again [CD/1981] 5/10=Five points for three Discharge tunes.
DISCHARGE - State Violence State Control [CD/1981] 3/10=Only two tracks, so...three points.
DISCHARGE - Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing [CD/1982] 9/10=Nothing could be more straightforward than this, driving political hardcore punk, this band inspired so many goddamn grind and hardcore bands it's not funny.
DISCHARGE - The Price of Silence [CD/1983] 3/10=Three points for two more tunes.
DISCHARGE - Nightmare in Lepakko [CD/1983] 4/10=They sounded a lot of fun live, this is something I would have loved to have seen had I been more aware, and not 9.
DISCHARGE - Grave New World [CD/1986]
DISCHARGE - Massacre Divine [CD/1991]
DISCHARGE - Discharge [CD/2002]

DISIPLIN - Vama Marga [DVD63/2002] 3/5=Demo from the Norse black metal band, they will get better than this material that is for sure.
DISIPLIN - Disiplin [CD/2003] 8/10=So yeah, this band rules and why are they not more popular than they are?
DISIPLIN - Anti-Life [CD/2005] 9/10=A sick, and welcome, burst of Norwegian black metal, surprisingly visceral and raw for the high production values on display here. Formed by a former member of Myrkskog. Excellence.

DISMAL EUPHONY - Spellbound [CD/1995] 4/10=One of the earliest of the goth/black metal bands to use female vocals, and decent ones at that, this EP is a nice introduction to a pretty talented band.
DISMAL EUPHONY - Soria Moria Slott [CD/1996] 7/10=One of very few black/goth metal bands I could ever take seriously, and I admire that this was just a single phase for them, they would evolve much further. Good album.
DISMAL EUPHONY - Autumn Leaves [CD/1997] 8/10=I love this one, one of the few pioneers of Fairy Metal that I will give a by-, since they were always interesting and always delivered quality in their music.
DISMAL EUPHONY - All Little Devils [CD/1999] 7/10='Days of Sodom' is a nice opener, great mixture of female and black vocals, even if quirky sounding, this is how it should be done, and this is more like Vampiric Fairy metal.
DISMAL EUPHONY - Lady Ablaze [CD/2000] 6/10=A nice EP that hints at the band's next stage in evolution, brief but entertaining.
DISMAL EUPHONY - Python Zero [CD/2001] 10/10=This album is simply perfect...is it black metal? or goth metal? Hard to say, it works elements of both into a wholly unique style...if you want something new in your diet, voila...

DISMEMBER - Like an Everflowing Stream [CD/1991] 8/10=A Swedish death metal classic, truly, but I'm afraid it's no Left Hand Path or Slaughter of the Soul.
DISMEMBER - Pieces [CD/1992] 6/10=for an EP with six tracks, this kicks a lot of ass, one of my favorite releases by the seminal Swedish death-sters. Crushing.
DISMEMBER - Indecent & Obscene [CD/1993] 7/10=More of that grinding, churning Swedish death metal guitar tone, and another pleasing album, maybe not as good as Like an Everflowing Stream.
DISMEMBER - Casket Garden [CD/1995] 3/10=Single for the upcoming Massive Killing Capacity, three tunes for three points.
DISMEMBER - Massive Killing Capacity [CD/1995] 7/10=Slower paced and groovier here, as the cover art would suggest, there is a Bolt Thrower influence, and it's often indistinguishable from slower Entombed, but still good.
DISMEMBER - Misanthropic [CD/1997] 5/10=It's an EP, but four of the five songs WON'T be appearing on the new album Death Metal, so for fans it's not a bad bargain as far as these things go.
DISMEMBER - Death Metal [CD/1997] 6/10=I loved that profound, bold statement made by the title of this record...Death Metal, unfortunately, the album does little to back that statement, it's just not as good as their past albums.
DISMEMBER - Hate Campaign [CD/2000] 6/10=I spun this quite a few times when I first got it, but after a few years its impression has faded and I'd rate it only as high as Death Metal.
DISMEMBER - Where Ironcrosses Grow [CD/2004] 6/10=I always wanted to see this band go somewhere, make that killer album we all know they can make, but this is only on par with the last two, playing it pretty safe.
DISMEMBER - The God That Never Was [CD/2006] 7/10=Well, I've been waiting for this one for awhile, the last three albums were decent but just not great, this one is probably the best since Massive Killing Capacity.
DISMEMBER - Dismember [CD/2008] 7/10=They've always been a decent band, but have never topped their debut album. This new s/t affair may actually be the closest they've come to that level of quality.

DISSECTION (SWE) - The Somberlain [CD/1993] 9/10=A real asskicking, furious Swedish death/black metal album with just the right amount of melody.
DISSECTION (SWE) - Storm of the Light's Bane [CD/1995] 8/10=This is a great album of melodic black/death metal, for many a favorite, but I prefer the first album.
DISSECTION (SWE) - The Past is Alive (The Early Mischief) [CD/1997] 4/10=One of the better demo/rare collections I've heard, I like their early sound but I still can't justify it with more than a few points.
DISSECTION (SWE) - Reinkaos [CD/2006] 4/10=What more can be said than this is a terrible disappointment, far removed from early Dissection, and has elements of trendier bands.

DODHEIMSGARD - Kronet Til Konge [CD/1995] 7/10=I remember this band wasted no time in smashing my fucking face in. A brutal, primal, beautiful black metal experience, but little else.
DODHEIMSGARD - Promo [CD/1995] 1/10=This sounds like it might be recorded live, the bass is too loud to take this recording seriously and all the songs sound better on Kronet Til Konge.
DODHEIMSGARD - Monumental Possession [CD/1996] 8/10=Another tearing black metal assault, with some of their best songs at various paces, love the raw production.
DODHEIMSGARD - Satanic Art [CD/1998] 8/10=Still unrelenting, DHG do it again with an EP of sick fucking shredding black metal, this may be a sign of their experimental phase to come, 'Symptom' is a sick tune.
DODHEIMSGARD - 666 International [CD/1999] 9/10=Whoah...electronic elements, creepy goth vocals, merged with primal black metal...BLUE corpse paint, this band was headed off the deep end but it's quite an amazing plunge.
DODHEIMSGARD - Mork Skog [CD/2005] 5/10=Their original promos from before the first album, re-released. Good stuff.
DODHEIMSGARD - Supervillain Outcast [CD/2007] 9/10=Man...the eight year wait is over and Dodheimsgard deliver another gem, I'm not sure I like the production as much as 666 International but the songs are just about as mindblowing.

DOLORIAN - When All the Laughter Has Gone [CD/1999] 9/10=This band can seamlessly integrate calm atmospheric landscapes with melancholic black doom, and they are one of my favorite Finnish acts. Imperative to own.
DOLORIAN - Dolorian [CD/2001] 9/10=More from this fascinating Finnish band that almost defies any category. Dark metal with tranquil passages, gothic whispers, minimal lyrics, the bottom line is they are pretty fucking awesome.
DOLORIAN/SHINING - Split [DVD23/2004] 4/5=It's been quite some time without Dolorian, and here they release one new track, and Shining has one song here. Very good split from two great bands.
DOLORIAN - Voidwards [CD/2006] 8/10=It's a thicker and juicier record than the past two, but for some intangible reason I liked it a tad less. Still impressive though and still one of Finland's most unique, dark metal acts.

DOMINION CALIGULA - A New Era Rises [CD/2000] 10/10=This is one perfect motherfucking record. A mixture of doom, black metal, and melodic death, with atmosphere to spare and samples befitting the name Caligula.

DOOM (JP) - No More Pain [DVD129/1987] 8/10=Dirty fucking thrash metal from Japan, this was their most 'straightforward' album, with a heavy influence of earlier Voivod, but it's still great even today.
DOOM (JP) - Killing Field [DVD117/1988] 4/5=Challenging and strange thrash metal from Japan...a Sigh before Sigh existed. Occasionally reminded me of Voivod, but not much.
DOOM (JP) - Complicated Mind [DVD129/1988] 8/10=A truly unique hybrid of thrash, punk and funk, a fascinating album...some of this sounds like the Cromartie High anime soundtrack, wonder if it's the same guy...
DOOM (JP) - Incompetent [DVD129/1989] 7/10=Possibly my least favorite album from these guys, but it's still very fucking interesting proto-funk-thrash comparable to really noone except possibly Voivod.
DOOM (JP) - Human Noise [DVD77/1991] 8/10=If you thought Sigh was a unique avant-garde Japanese metal band, you should have heard these unique thrashers. Trust me, just listen to it. Their fourth album.
DOOM (JP) - Doom VI: Illegal Soul [DVD129/1992] 8/10=Here is a band that never really disappointed me as far as how unique they'd be...I mean they have percssion jams here amidst unique thrash metal...

DOUBLE DEALER - Double Dealer [DVD79/2000] 7/10=Melodic speed/heavy metal from Japan that will appeal to fans of Dead End, Anthem, Loudness and the rest of the classic bands of this type.
DOUBLE DEALER - Deride at the Top [DVD79/2001] 7/10=Another good album from the Japanese melodic metallers.
DOUBLE DEALER - Fate & Destiny [CD/2005]
DOUBLE DEALER - Desert of Lost Souls [DVD36/2007] 9/10=Amazing new album from this side band from members of Concerto Moon and Saber Tiger. Great metal here, on par with some of the better Anthem albums.

DRAGONLAND - The Battle of the Ivory Plains [CD/2001] 6/10=Another of the many uber-proficient Euro fantasy power metal bands, this is a top-notch production, yet fails to provide any memorable material.
DRAGONLAND - Holy War [CD/2002] 7/10=It's an improvement over the previous album, even manages a few catchy riffs here or there, but so much of this is just lifted off previous fantasy power metal albums. AGGGHGGHH!
DRAGONLAND - Starfall [CD/2004] 9/10=This is another huge step forward for this band, I mean they actually have some authenticity on this. Somewhat more theatrical than the earlier material, more progressive, and excellent.
DRAGONLAND - Astronomy [CD/2006] 9/10=A seriously awesome band, and a seriously awesome new album. One of the most talented of the prog/power crop, never overplaying, all is composed for the song and the end result.

DRAWN & QUARTERED - To Kill is Human [DVD128/1999] 6/10=Though it's not nearly as advanced as what they are capable of now, you can tell they had a strange edge even on their debut.
DRAWN & QUARTERED - Crusaders of Blasphemy [CD/2002]
DRAWN & QUARTERED - Extermination Revelry [CD/2003]
DRAWN & QUARTERED - Return of the Black Death [CD/2004]
DRAWN & QUARTERED - Hail Infernal Darkness [CD/2006] 7/10=Fourth album by these Seattle death merchants, and it shows. Good songwriting in the Morbid Angel vein, worth checking out.
DRAWN & QUARTERED - Merciless Hammer of Lucifer [CD/2007] 10/10=Incredible 5th album, amazing, like a mix of Morbid Angel and Demilich. Fucking amazing improvement from the Seattle band.

DREAM THEATER - When Dream and Day Unite [DVD31/1989] 8/10=Great debut, they had a different singer on this but I actually enjoyed his vocals more than the wimpier Labrie vox.
DREAM THEATER - Images and Words [DVD31/1992] 9/10=The big record that broke them, loaded with excellent music and give or take vocals. Major prog metal trendsetting album, "Under a Glass Moon" rules.
DREAM THEATER - Awake [DVD31/1994] 8/10=Following up Images and Words would prove difficult, but Awake is actually almost as good as that, and I found the songwriting more diverse.
DREAM THEATER - A Change of Seasons [DVD31/1995] 6/10=This record never hooked me, it's some cover tunes and the epic title track, a 23-minute long Dream Theater tune that missed nearly as often as it hit.
DREAM THEATER - Falling Into Infinity [DVD31/1997] 5/10=It's the least metal and the worst Dream Theater album, here is the low point for James LaBries vocals and while not terrible, I felt it was mediocre.
DREAM THEATER - Scenes from a Memory [DVD31/1999] 7/10=Many consider this their best album, a return to form and all that. I enjoyed some of the tunes but there was some filler here or there.
DREAM THEATER - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence [DVD31/2002] 9/10=This is easily my favorite Dream Theater album, 2 discs of their most interest, experimental, and certainly heaviest material, with great social commentary. Awesome.
DREAM THEATER - Train of Thought [DVD31/2003] 8/10=Came pretty soon after Six Degrees, as far as their normal release periods go, but it was still pretty damn good.
DREAM THEATER - Octavarium [DVD31/2005] 6/10=It's not terrible, but there were a lot of places I didn't like the vocals.
DREAM THEATER - Systematic Chaos [DVD31/2007] 8/10=High quality new album, the music is generally great and the vocals are decent throughout, for the most part, aside from those nu-metal rap vox on one of the songs.

DREDG - Conscious [CD/1996]
DREDG - Orph [DVD45/1997] 4/5=Very curious EP, heavier than their later albums, with great percussion and mood.
DREDG - Leitmotif [DVD45/2001] 7/10=Pretty good, heavy indie rock that's huge on atmosphere.
DREDG - Extended Play for the Eastern Hemisphere [CD/2002]
DREDG - El Cielo [CD/2002] 8/10=Their best album overall, very catchy across almost all the tracks.
DREDG - Catch Without Arms [CD/2005] 7/10=Not sure if this is considered emo, but probably as close as I get. Catchy melodic indie rock with some great songs, the album fizzles a little on the latter half of the tracks.

DRUDKH - Forgotten Legends [CD/2002] 9/10=Epic yet sublime, a master stroke of beautiful, flowing black metal that attains its simple goal of crafting authentic atmosphere and carrying you there. Marvelous.
DRUDKH - Autumn Aurora [CD/2003] 10/10=New Drudkh album? I'm there. This is just as great as the last one. Or...it's BETTER than the last album. As a matter of fact, this is mother fucking perfect.
DRUDKH - The Swan Road [CD/2005] 6/10=Can't say I'm a huge fan on this one, I admired the first two albums but he's really just offering more of the same, which would be okay if I hadn't heard these exact riffs before.
DRUDKH - Blood In Our Wells [CD/2006] 9/10=Another amazing record, smokes the first three, even though Autumn Aurora was likewise perfection. This is such an inspiration piece...does get boring after about six months though.
DRUDKH - Songs of Grief and Solitude [CD/2006] 7/10=I enjoyed this, it's no Blood in Our Wells but then this is a pure folkish album, not what you typically hear from Drudkh, but still well worth the time to check out.
DRUDKH - Anti-Urban [DVD28/2007] 4/5=EP with 2 new songs, "Ashes" is pretty cool.
DRUDKH - Estrangement [CD/2007] 8/10=I'm glad he returned to his melodic, glorious black metal style, not that the folk album was bad or anything. This is no Blood in Our Wells but it's still a great exhibition of sorrow.

DURAN DURAN - Duran Duran [CD/1981] 8/10=The first album by these British new wave pop icons, no introduction really needed, this is a solid debut and tunes like 'Girls on Film' offer a hint of the great music to follow.
DURAN DURAN - Rio [CD/1982] 9/10='Hungry Like a Wolf', 'Rio', and a half dozen other classic fucking pop tracks. Simply unbelievable.
DURAN DURAN - Seven and the Ragged Tiger [CD/1983] 9/10='Union of the Snake' and the absolutely excellent 'Reflex', 'New Moon on Monday', I could go on...
DURAN DURAN - Arena [CD/1984] 5/10=For the most part a live album, but you also get 'Wild Boys' here which isn't on any of the other records to my knowledge.
DURAN DURAN - Notorious [CD/1986] 8/10=This was an album overlooked by the masses despite having a few big singles, it is still a gem of pop rock that gave many great tunes to the fans.
DURAN DURAN - Big Thing [CD/1987] 6/10=Decent enough, but there is a bit of filler here, only a few of the songs really stand out.
DURAN DURAN - Decade [CD/1989] 0/10=Previously released material, but then, a band of this status is overdue one of these corporate assaults...still, can you go wrong? Every song is good but I already have them all.
DURAN DURAN - Liberty [CD/1991] 5/10=Not my favorite Duran Duran album, though it still has some merit, just not a lot. But wait...
DURAN DURAN - The Wedding Album [CD/1993] 10/10=I would have given the album a 10 for having 'Ordinary World' or 'Come Undone' alone, the former the greatest pop track ever recorded in our world. But to have them both together...
DURAN DURAN - Thank You [CD/1995] 2/10=Who the fuck cares, Duran Duran doing cover songs. Guess they thought it was a great idea, but guys, you can do better than any of this crap, and you ARE better than any band you cover.
DURAN DURAN - Medazzaland [CD/1997] 8/10=Another surprisingly good record, I enjoy 'Big Bang Generation', 'Electric Barbarella', and much of the rest, although anything would pale in comparison to The Wedding Album.
DURAN DURAN - Pop Trash [CD/2000] 6/10=This doesn't suck at all, it's actually a quality album, just has nothing that sticks out to mind, like most of their past albums did. We can forgive them this once in awhile though.
DURAN DURAN - Astronaut [CD/2004] 7/10=Original lineup returns, and delivers a strong album slightly better than Pop Trash, but there are no songs here to compare with an 'Ordinary World' or 'The Reflex'. Poor Warren.
DURAN DURAN - Red Carpet Massacre [CD/2007] 8/10=Considering Justin Timberlake and Timbaland were involved in the production of this album, I am surprised it turned out so well and surprisingly Duran Duran. Their best in a decade.
