EDGE OF SANITY - Nothing But Death Remains [CD/1991] 5/10=A nice but forgettable setup for their career...simple death metal with some charging riffs and a variety of dynamics, similar to Death and Entombed.
EDGE OF SANITY - Unorthodox [CD/1992] 7/10=Some consider this their classic...it's not perfect, but a pretty fucking good groovy Swedish death metal album for its day, with Dan Swano's penchant melodies and some clean vocals.
EDGE OF SANITY - The Spectral Sorrows [CD/1993] 8/10=A great slab of simple Swedish death metal...that's really the strength of the band, they don't need to floor you with technicality to write some good songs.
EDGE OF SANITY - Purgatory Afterglow [CD/1994] 8/10=This has some amazing songs and melodies like 'Twilight' but after a few years it has slipped off the radar.
EDGE OF SANITY - Until Eternity Ends [CD/1994] 3/10=They wanted to do an EP to kick out some of their groovier riffs, and it succeeds at that without sucking. 3 tunes for 3 points.
EDGE OF SANITY - Crimson [CD/1996] 7/10=The first single song concept album...but the entire band was in on this one. A good, flowing song with all the Edge of Sanity melodies and catchy riffs you'd expect.
EDGE OF SANITY - Infernal [CD/1997] 7/10=Accessible, catchy songs to be found here, I rather enjoyed it although it's all over the place.
EDGE OF SANITY - Cryptic [CD/1997] 6/10=They no longer have Dan Swano in the mix...but still a solid effort with the new vocalist. Nothing really standouts, but on the whole its a crusher for a few listens.
EDGE OF SANITY - Crimson II [CD/2003] 7/10=The sequel 'comeback' concept album, but I believe this is ENTIRELY Dan Swano with new guests on guitar...wonder how the band feels about that! Good stuff though.
EINHERJER - Aurora Borealis [CD/1994] 4/10=An EP of Norwegian Viking metal that pummels along at a fairly mid pace, which is a nice change from the Enslaved or the faster Bathory stuff. Otherwise, this is not so great.
EINHERJER - Leve Vikinganden [CD/1995] 2/10=Two tracks of Viking metal...and pretty weak Viking metal at that. They use a lot of clean vocals but really just come across as goofballs when they do. Some decent riffs here and there.
EINHERJER - Dragons of the North [CD/1996] 8/10=A band improved on just about every level, they are more Viking, more intense, more exciting, and 'Dragonstorm' is the greatest Viking metal track since 'Blood Fire Death'.
EINHERJER - Far Far North [CD/1997] 2/10=The title track is pretty good, but the other two tracks on this EP were already released as Leve Vikinganden.
EINHERJER - Odin Owns Ye All [CD/1998] 1/10=What...the fuck...is this...shit? What...the fuck...what...the FUCK!??! The biggest sack of horseshit I have ever heard, don't Viking metal me with your fishnet shirt you pussy fuck.
EINHERJER - Norwegian Native Art [CD/2000] 6/10=They could have done another Odin Owns Ye All, but they didn't. This is actually a good record and I saw them perform this shit live and it wasn't so bad. No Dragons of the North though.
EINHERJER - Blot [CD/2003] 8/10=I like this one a great deal, it has a nice mixture of cheesy atmospheric Viking elements with some puncturing, dirty guitars and mean vocals. About as good as Dragons of the North.
ELDRITCH (IT) - Seeds of Rage [CD/1995] 8/10=Well, there is the fact that I find this prog/power metal band from Italy more original and inspiring than just about any other band riding that wave...and these guys rode in pretty early.
ELDRITCH (IT) - Headquake [CD/1997] 8/10=Great prog metal, you can hear a slight Dream Theater influence at times but it's tasteful, and also some thrash elements...this is a great band that is sadly ignored by the metal masses.
ELDRITCH (IT) - El Nino [CD/1998] 9/10=Memorable, original progressive/thrash metal, not afraid to jump around and even put some death metal riffs in their songs. Every song on this album is good, a very overlooked Italian band.
ELDRITCH (IT) - Reverse [CD/2001] 7/10=They definitely turned up the heavy for this one, and unfortunately some of that heavy is boring, but there are enough moments where the Eldritch we knew and loved rears its head once again.
ELDRITCH (IT) - Portrait of the Abyss Within [CD/2004] 8/10=Yes, here is a far greater balance of their newer, more aggressive style with the subtle prog metal leanings of their past. Another great Eldritch record is born!
ELDRITCH (IT) - Neighbourhell [CD/2006] 5/10=Some of the music is great, it still sounds like Eldritch, but they've hit a career valley with this one, the lyrics are terrible all around and a few of the songs are abysmal.
ELDRITCH (IT) - Blackenday [DVD23/2007] 6/10=It's better than Neighbourhell, but has some awkward, terrible lyrics and I can't get into the vocals.
ELECTRIC WIZARD - Electric Wizard [CD/1995] 7/10=Two observations people generally make about Electric Wizard. They are either the best post-Sabbath doom rock ever conceived, or they are the worst band in music. Almost, and no.
ELECTRIC WIZARD - Come My Fanatics [CD/1996] 8/10=Far darker and heavier than their debut, this album is a motherfucking crusher. The only downside, as usual in this extreme doom shit, is you can get quite bored when not in the mood.
ELECTRIC WIZARD - Chrono.Naut [CD/1997] 3/10=Again, doom = mood backwards, and when you are in a backwards mood, you can appreciate doom, even if it's a single 17 minute long song like on this record. Three points for this long song.
ELECTRIC WIZARD - Supercoven [CD/1998] 5/10=Two really fucking long songs, and two other songs that are pretty long, including a live cut of their namesake theme song.
ELECTRIC WIZARD - Dopethrone [CD/2000] 10/10=Not perfect because it's a great work of music. Not perfect because it breaks ground...perfect because it utterly, completely, irrevocably destroyed me, and not in that order.
ELECTRIC WIZARD - Let Us Pray [CD/2002] 9/10=Another skullcrushing work of maniacal doom mastery, imperfect only that they just did it two years ago, but this is perfect continuity, don't be dissuaded, vocals a little different.
ELECTRIC WIZARD - We Live [CD/2004] 9/10=Read my last review. Now, repeat it over aloud. Now, apply that review to this record.
ELECTRIC WIZARD - Witchcult Today [CD/2007] 8/10=It's great and groovy, but not as heavy as some of their previous albums, and has more than a few plagiarized riffs. Still, a pretty killer album.
EMPEROR - As the Shadows Rise [CD/1994] 4/10=Excellent little EP, it's quite short which is the reason for the low score but it sounds perfect.
EMPEROR - In the Nightside Eclipse [CD/1994] 10/10=This album is probably the best symphonic black metal album ever, even if the symphonic elements are just keys. This album used to scare the fuck out of me on late night drives, and if an album can creep me out, it must be good. My favorite Emperor record.
EMPEROR/ENSLAVED - Hordanes Land [CD/1994] 6/10=Most of this is available on other recordings...but as far as splits go...it's probably the best I've heard, these two bands compliment each other well.
EMPEROR - Reverence [CD/1997] 7/10=A decent three-track EP, I liked the songs.
EMPEROR - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk [CD/1997] 6/10=I think Metal Maniacs or someone named this the greatest metal album of all time. Hahaha...it wouldn't even crack the top 200 for me. Well played, good production, all the pieces are here...but it's simply not that memorable for me.
EMPEROR - Emperor/Wrath of the Tyrant [CD/1998] 6/10=Re-release of their early albums...the sound is obviously atrocious, but this was some important stuff, because of what came after :)~
EMPEROR - IX Equilibrium [CD/1999] 7/10=An interesting album, with their technical death metal roots aspirations invading their black metal. This is certainly a diverse record, they even toss in some King Diamond-esque vocals.
EMPEROR - Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire and Demise [CD/2001] 8/10=The big farewell album, it's a mixture of their symphonic black metal with intense technical death metal, the stuff Samoth would continue in Zyklon. It's a great album, for sure, but not their best work.
EMPTINESS - Guilty to Exist [DVD104/2004] 6/10=Went to track this first album down and I wasn't nearly as impressed. The style is fully in place but the songs just aren't as catchy or well-assembled as those on Oblivion.
EMPTINESS - Oblivion [CD/2007] 9/10=Amazing Belgian death metal, I mean it when I say this is one of the best death albums I've heard in 2007.
ENDSTILLE - Demon [CD/2001]
ENDSTILLE - Operation Wintersturm [DVD71/2002] 7/10=It's my least favorite of their albums, but quite a good start.
ENDSTILLE - Fruhlingserwachen [DVD105/2003] 8/10=It only took a sophomore effort to cataput Endstille up the ranks to one of the best German black metal bands.
ENDSTILLE - Dominanz [DVD71/2004] 8/10=Germany has produced another monster black metal band that will one day challenge the best in the world.
ENDSTILLE - Navigator [DVD71/2005] 8/10=They may not be my favorite of the new wave of German black metal bands, but they are one of the most unique and certainly solid.
ENDSTILLE - Endstilles Reich [DVD71/2007] 8/10=Fifth album from the Germans, they do come up with a fairly original approach to black metal, same instrumentation, but a cool way of coming up with chords for riffs.
ENSLAVED - Vikingligr Veldi [CD/1993] 6/10=A solid early release for the band, I just don't consider it as ambitious as anything else they've done...it's kinda safe, well-produced standard black metal.
ENSLAVED - Frost [CD/1994] 9/10=Always something enchanting about this album...from the goofy Viking photos to the lovely keyboard intro and then proceeding to beat the living fuck out of my eardrums with a viral black metal assault.
ENSLAVED - Eld [CD/1997] 6/10=Eld being 'fire', the natural followup to Frost. As you can see this is not my favorite album of Enslaved...seems sloppy to me at parts, but still has some good moments as counterweights.
ENSLAVED - Blodhemn [CD/1998] 8/10=I can take out my mug and swing it to just about any song on this album...that's DRINKING mug, you filthy bastards. Pure Viking extremity.
ENSLAVED - Mardraum [CD/2000] 8/10=This was the first album where they really went off the beaten path, and I love them for it...thus, psychedelic Viking black metal is born?!?
ENSLAVED - Monumension [CD/2001] 8/10=They are never a band to be settled with the past, always forging new dimensions to their sound without betraying their core Viking black elements. Wonderful music.
ENSLAVED - Below the Lights [CD/2003] 9/10=This band is always a pleasure to listen to...always interesting and never quite repeating themselves. They brought the black metal back for this one, and it worked.
ENSLAVED - Isa [CD/2004] 9/10=Another great record by a band that has never given it less than their all...there is a lot of dissonant harmony on this record that suits the mid-paced black metal well.
ENSLAVED - Ruun [CD/2006] 9/10=Yet another near masterpiece by one of Norway's finest bands, very experimental this time out, I hear a subtle and tasteful Voivod influence.
ENSLAVED - Vertebrae [CD/2008] 9/10=I'd consider this the 'Pink Floyd' of Enslaved albums, once you listen you'll know what I mean. Elegant and amazing as usual.
ENTOMBED - But Life Goes On [CD/1989] 5/10=Excellent demo from the Swedes, you got a nice sampler of their grinding, churning death.
ENTOMBED - Left Hand Path [CD/1990] 10/10=You can't mess with perfection, and this is the foundation for that thick, Swedish death metal sound emulated so longed for by retro bands like Bloodbath. This is quite an album...spotless, heavy, and essential.
ENTOMBED - Crawl [CD/1991] 2/10=3 Entombed songs, which is a great thing but just skip this EP and get all the songs on the s/t compilation from Earache.
ENTOMBED - Clandestine [CD/1992] 9/10=A lot groovier than the first, and symbolic of what was to come, still an excellent ride though.
ENTOMBED - Hollowman [CD/1993] 4/10=A six-track EP with two tunes from Wolverine Blues. It gets four points for the 4 non-album tracks, all of which are pretty cool.
ENTOMBED - Wolverine Blues [CD/1993] 9/10=Death and roll, motherfuckers, here it is, a blazing, dynamic album blending Entombed's death roots with groovy rock, and this is the style they continue to stick with.
ENTOMBED - Entombed [CD/1997] 6/10=Collection of rare EP tracks and unreleased material, so it gets points for not retreading a bunch of shit we already own.
ENTOMBED - To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth [CD/1997] 6/10=The death'n'roll album which would polarize the fanbase, I didn't like it that much because it reminds me too much of Clutch and Helmet, but it's okay.
ENTOMBED - Wreckage EP [CD/1997] 3/10=Dick in ass collector's EP.
ENTOMBED - Same Difference [CD/1998] 4/10=My least favorite Entombed album, really went on the rock'n'roll tip. They almost forgot who they were with this one, but of course they would soon remember.
ENTOMBED - Black Juju [CD/1999] 5/10=A decent EP on the mighty Man's Ruin records, with non-album material that is fairly stoner rockin'.
ENTOMBED - Uprising [CD/2000] 6/10=Basically some death metal and stoner rock joined at the hip, not a bad album but I rarely feel the urge to whip it out and listen to it.
ENTOMBED - Morning Star [CD/2001] 7/10=The inevitable shift back to Wolverine Blues style, their most famous album. You knew it would happen when their other albums weren't raging successes, bands kind of do this to regain their lost youth. It's good though.
ENTOMBED - Sons of Satan Praise the Lord [CDx2/2002] 5/10=Two discs of just about every cover song Entombed has recorded and released, and as good as this type of package is likely to get. Fans will enjoy it.
ENTOMBED - Inferno [CD/2003] 7/10=Also good, they kind of find a balance here between the two previous albums.
ENTOMBED - Averno [CD/2004] 3/10=Boring bonus EP with the Inferno album, not quite interesting which is why I've listened only once.
ENTOMBED - Unreal Estate [CD/2004] 2/10=Something about this entire experience reminded me of the guys spinning the Wheel of Fortune muttering "big money, big money, big money...".
ENTOMBED - When in Sodom [CD/2006] 4/5=The new Entombed EP, and it is pretty badass, if you can get past a few of the tongue-in-cheek lyrics, but then, they've always had that going on.
ENTOMBED - Serpent Saints: The Ten Amendments [CD/2007] 8/10=Great new album, maintains the quality from the When in Sodom EP, probably the best Entombed in many years.
EQUILIBRIUM - Demo [DVD51/2003] 5/5=Extremely impressive demo, almost album length, I enjoyed it more than the full length, some of the tunes cross over.
EQUILIBRIUM - Turis Fratyr [CD/2005] 7/10=Happy, queer melodic Viking black/power metal, makes me want to kick around the elves in woodland glades, at other times has enough class to listen again, similar to Ensiferum.
EQUILIBRIUM - Sagas [CD/2008] 9/10=Blows the first album out of the water, again it's synth-heavy, cheesy folk metal, but the writing is excellent and the songs are memorable.
EQUIRHODONT - Equirhodont Grandiose Magus [DVD33/2003] 8/10=This was a little darker and more prog than the new record, but it was equally as cool.
EQUIRHODONT - Black Crystal [DVD33/2004] 8/10=Dark and legendary epic metal, pretty simple and slow but this has two members of Root including Big Boss himself, so you know it rocks.
ETERNITY (GER) - ...And the Gruesome Returns With Every Night [CD/2004] 10/10=This, my friends, is what black metal is truly all about. Pure hatred, darkness, and evil, there is nothing pretentious here, just a dire end for us all.
ETERNITY (GER) - Funeral Mass [CD/2007] 9/10=It's amazing, perhaps not as amazing as the debut...but what could be?
EVERGREY - The Dark Discovery [CD/1998] 5/10=A power/prog metal band comes along and, whoah. They are different, primarily due to Tom Englund's deeper voice. This album has some excellent moments, but others are weak and monotonous.
EVERGREY - Solitude Dominance Tragedy [CD/1999] 7/10=Much more powerful than the debut, some of these riffs just make me go balls out and start banging my head like THIS! Yes! But wait, they are not done improving quite yet...
EVERGREY - In Search of Truth [CD/2001] 8/10=Took me a few listens at first, but this is yet another step forward in quality for these fairly original Swedes. 'Watching the Skies' and 'Mark of the Triangle' are great tunes.
EVERGREY - Recreation Day [CD/2003] 9/10=Fucking loved this one. My favorite Evergrey record by far, liked every track in the bunch. Tell me you don't like 'The Great Deceiver' or the beginning to 'As I Lay Here Bleeding'...
EVERGREY - The Inner Circle [CD/2004] 8/10=It sounds cleaner than Recreation Day, but in all I didn't like this one quite so much. Still a great record well worth having for the fans of progressive and powerful metal.
EVERGREY - A Night to Remember [CDx2/2005] 3/10=I'm not sure I can get into this guy's vocals live, they pretty much smother the rest of the production on this live album though they do play a nice selection of songs.
EVERGREY - Monday Morning Apocalypse [CD/2006] 6/10=Some of the riffs are catchy but the songs seem to be going in a too-accessible direction, and the album is considerably weaker than all save the debut.
EVERGREY - Torn [CD/2008] 9/10=An excellent album, the best since Recreation Day, loaded with catchy hooks and atmosphere. A penultimate Evergrey album?
EVOCATION - Tales from the Tomb [CD/2007] 9/10=Amazing Swedish death metal, reminds me of the old days of At the Gates and Necrophobic. More melodic than other bands doing this style like Bloodbath, Ribspreader, etc.
EXHUMED - Gore Metal [CD/1998] 7/10=If you can accept that this California band exists for no other reason than to basically ape mid-era Carcass, with a dash of other influences, then you can accept that they truly do rock.
EXHUMED - Slaughtercult [CD/2000] 8/10=Very impressive. Better sound, better songs than on Gore Metal, and my personal favorite from this band.
EXHUMED - Anatomy is Destiny [CD/2003] 7/10=Songs are taking on a slightly less aggressive tone, with more melodies, but still that death metal/Carcass edge. I'd consider this the Heartwork of Exhumed. A pretty good album.
EXHUMED - Platters of Splatter [CDx2/2004] 6/10=The ultimate fan package, collects just about every demo, split, or early recording this band made prior to Gore Metal. A must have for Exhumed maniacs.
EXHUMED - Garbage Daze Re-Regurgitated [CD/2005] 5/10=A covers album, with everything from Metallica, Amebix, and Unseen Terror to Led Zeppelin and the Cure, all performed with goretastic Exhumed flair.
EXHUMED/INGROWING - Something Sickened This Way Comes [CD/2006] 6/10=A new split from two sick bands, Exhumed are a bit better but that is to be expected, Ingrowing are still cool. Three songs each.
EXMORTEM - Labyrinths of Horror [DVD140/1995] 8/10=Classic great Danish death metal here, a pure old school debut.
EXMORTEM - Dejected in Obscurity [DVD140/1998] 8/10=What the fuck is there not to like? Pure, simple death metal that sounds like fucking DEATH METAL, and not a bullshit wank-off.
EXMORTEM - Berzerker Legions [DVD140/2001] 7/10=Though the brutality has arguably been ante'd-up for this record, I didn't enjoy it as much as the previous two. Still good though.
EXMORTEM - Pestilence Empire [DVD140/2002] 8/10=Their most brutal yet, up a notch even from Berzerker Legions, and this honestly had better tunes than that one.
EXMORTEM - Nihilistic Contentment [DVD140/2005] 8/10=Exmortem remains one of the most consistent and one of my favorite Danish death metal bands.
EXODUS - Bonded by Blood [CD/1985] 9/10=A classic in every sense of the word, one of the earliest gems in the thrash/speed metal genre. 'A Lesson in Violence', 'Pirahna', 'Strike of the Beast', all excellent.
EXODUS - Pleasures of the Flesh [CD/1987] 9/10=Zetro joins on vocals, and although I don't prefer his style, he was more unique than Baloff. Another killer fucking record. 'Til Death Do Us Part', 'Brain Dead', and so on.
EXODUS - Fabulous Disaster [CD/1989] 8/10=Had a nice, heavy, thrashing tone to it, and memorable tracks like 'Cajun Hell', 'The Toxic Waltz', and just about every other track. Not my favorite but certainly their most popular.
EXODUS - Impact is Imminent [CD/1990] 7/10=The opening riff is absolutely sick, the sickest Exodus ever had, but the album does tend to get a little dull after awhile, even despite the great guitar tone.
EXORCIST - Nightmare Theatre [CD/1985] 9/10=Excellent album of occult speed/thrash metal, with members of Virgin Steele under a different name, it is unfortunate they didn't do this more often, it's far better than Steele.
