Management of Knowledge and Innovation Research Unit presents a seminar by Rob Paton, Management Learning Research and
Development Unit, OUBS Scott Taylor (presenter) Research Fellow, Management Learning Research and Development Unit, OUBS Corporate universities: Between higher education and the workplace In this seminar we present initial findings from a continuing research project exploring the corporate university phenomenon. It is increasingly noted that corporations are seeking to become learning organisations in a knowledge-based economy, akin to epistemological holding companies and knowledge producing institutions. A central but neglected focus for this is the corporate university (CU), educational institutions wholly owned and controlled by private companies focused on providing training and education for employees and suppliers. Based on analysis of interview data from directors of six European CUs, we locate corporate universities in relation to existing educational institutions, suggesting that they are seeking to fill a perceived cultural gap between independent higher education (HE) and the workplace. On this basis we consider whether and to what extent certain values and characteristics associated with universities are becoming accepted, operationally as well as aspirationally, within corporate knowledge-sharing and knowledge-creation activities. Finally, we discuss different perspectives on the CU as a new arrival in the landscape of HE, and how it may relate to other HE institutions.
