Mate in 64 - The Ultimate Chess Problem!


White to move, mate in 64!

Mike Maloney, a visitor to our site, graciously submitted this fantastic mate-in-64 puzzle, along with his well documented solution.
The problem was composed by Gustave Charles Reichhelm in 1877. Mike was given the problem in 1994, and solved it in 1998.
Mike's solution is currently available for download in two versions:

• In its original format as a Microsoft Word document.
• As a pgn file (mi64.pgn in the collection. Readable by the ChessCorrespondent and other pgn file readers).
