Chess Rules

Introduction

This quick course is designed to teach the rules of chess to someone who doesn't know them. But maybe you already know most, if not all of the rules of chess, if so, consider this a brief refresher course. Many people, however, have been taught incorrectly, or don't know some of the more obscure rules. So you may be surprised at what you'll learn!

Chess is many things. It is a game, a sport, a science, and an art!

As a game, it is one in which the element of chance has been almost completely eliminated, and skill rules supreme!

Chess is a game of the mind that will challenge your intellect and can help you develop pattern recognition and logical thinking. In a world with a constantly diminishing attention span, it fosters concentration, study, and problem-solving techniques.

And it's fun!

It is customary, when giving instructions for a game, to state the object of the game at the start. In chess, the object of the game is something called "checkmate". But I can't tell you what checkmate means until we've gone over some other things first...
