John Spencer was one of the group of 48 British co-founders of the Newport, Rhode Island settlement. John Spencer was honored by being made a Freeman of Newport & during the King Phillip War of 1675-1676 he served with honor, later receiving a land grant in recognition of his service. During their residence in Newport six of their family of nine children were born. However in 1677 they removed to East Greenwich RI where in 1684 John Spencer died & in 1719 his beloved wife Susannah passed away. During the greater part of the life of John Spencer he was a strong believer in a democratic government & became a leader in his community.
