Joseph was a farmer, residing in Picton and farming the other half of the original Spencer homestead, next to his brother, Corey. At the time of the 1881 census, they were still listed as "Friends". Living next to them were Cornelius Hill, age 59, and his sister, Rebecca Hill, age 55, neither of them every married. Sarah Barker Hill was their sister.
Joseph is buried in Glenwood cemetery.
