The Netherlands
Ask most travelers to sum up Holland in a few words and those
well-worn clogs, cheese and tulips sneak into the vocabulary
like turning sails of another stereotype, the windmill.
Though a modern Dutch person sighs and says,
"There is so much more!"
these classic images are also well loved.
There's so much more, from The Hague's green avenues
and seat of government to Maastricht's Roman ruins.
From Amsterdam's canals and flamboyant nightlife
to Lisse's blooming flower fields.
From Rotterdam's vast harbor and extraordinary
architecture to the lakes and mudflats of Groningen.
There are so many places to see. Amsterdam, the capital,
with its canals and gabled houses. The financial and economic
heart of the country, with 42 museums, 141 art galleries,
65 theaters and concert halls, it is a cultural capital as well.
As well as Delft, Haarlem, Maastricht, Friesland
(pronounced Freesland), Utrecht, the University towns of
Leiden and Groningen, the North Sea coast,
national parks and Wadden Islands.
Holland--a friendly, inexpensive country where English is
widely spoken and nothing is far away. Holland is Europe
in a nutshell; flowers, fine food, canals and castles.
Modern and medieval, Holland is the Europe you imagined.
