To extend the taste to other genres of music in a student the following could be done. Students should be exposed to new types of music. Students at times might not give a certain genre of music a chance but once they listen to it they might enjoy it. Also in class, the teacher could show the students new types of music and make it into a fun lesson. An example, would be playing a simple guessing game as to what type of genre the music is. That could invoke interest in the new genres of music they're learning. Trips could be made to different places were differnt genres of music would be played. Then, the kids could make a choice as to what music they like the best. New music could extend a childs creativity and is very important. So Mr. Lawson start planning those trips! :)

I agree with Ivon because sometimes you just don't give new things a chance. Some people may not want to try new things beacause things that you already know is safe. You already know what its going to be like but it gets boring because everyone is practically talking about the same thing. New genres of music can be introduced to people in various ways you can suggest it to them or have them listen to it with you. Creating variety in your music is a great benefit because every type of music has its own history but they are joined in some way it could be instruments used, or the type of beat that helps create that music. Just as Ivon said creativity is very important and curiosity is the key.

I agree with Ivon. Trips can help students have an interest in another genre of music. But what about those students who do not go to the trips? How will they find a way to stop listening to one genre of music? And as Ivon earlier, teachers can make lesson to expose new genres of music to the students. But what about those students who don’t participate in the lesson nor listen to it? So… what I’m trying to say that however you try to expose a new genre of music to students, not all the students will bother. For example, when my friend exposed me to hip-hop for the first time, I did not like it. So in that case, exposing a student to a new genre of music for the first time does not mean they’ll like it.

I think that if a person inly hears to one type of music we should repect their thought. I mean not every one hears to the same thing and not every one thinks Music is cool! But to change other peoples mines to listen to other type of music not only one type we should make them listen to diffrent more type of music!

There is a lot of things that can be done to make students be open to different types of music. The students need to be exposed to different types of music and to do do, they can take trips to musicals and other shows. Another option is getting them to socialize with people that listens to a different genre than them and also as Ivon has said, if they are taking music class the teacher can have some fun activities planned for those students. The students may not want too do it because they can be very hard headed! But if it is a mandatory project and they would have to do it, they would see that different genres of music is n that bad. The Students needs to expand their mind. They just have to be exposed to the different types of music and after that they might enjoy it.Then eventually they would be interested in the different genres. I also thinks that if a person do not want to expand their creativity and listen to different types of music, they should not be compelled to do something they do not want to do!

I agree with Yoana because people should listen to what ever they like listenng to. People dont have to change the type of music because maybe thats what they grew up in a different community where they only listen to one type of music. For example: While I was in Pennsylvania all I heard people listen to was Pop and I usualy listen to alot of types of music so it seened weird at first but I guess if thats what they like is what they like and you cant really change that.

All of your comments are valid and there are many aspects of your answers that I agree with. I'm going to refer to Shaakira's statement, if people don't want to listen to a different type of music or expose themselves to it it's there choice. Not everyone is going to want to open themselves to new things. No matter how much you expose a person to something its their choice to absorb it or not. You can't force somebody to like something.

I disagree with Aihsha. I think that people listen to a certain style of music because they can relate to it in a certain way. I think that people don't like certain music because it's either too loud or too soft, and it can make them a certain mood they might not like. fFor instance, some people don't like classical music because it is sad and low toned. Some people want to hear something up beat and loud to make them jump up and hop on their feet. It may be possible to change a person genre for music for some people, but for other people that know what kind of music they feel good to, they wont change it.

I think that in order to extend a students interest in other types of music besides the genre that they like is if people would tell that student the new type of music that comes out or what new songs that would come out. Another way is by taking those students to different kinds of musicals and letting them feel that other music is great too and that you can really enjoy it. Some students listens to one type of genre because they feel that they can relate to it and maybe that music is from their country so they can really relate to it and maybe if it's in their language they can understand it better and so they choose to listen to that one type of music. Even after trying they still choose to listen to one type of music then that means that they are really not interested and we should not force people to do something that they really don't want to do even if it is something simple as listening to music.

I like that some people have said you can't force someone into liking something. I believe that is definitly true. Many people are close-minded, so they probably wouldn't want to try give new things a chance. Just as Ivon said, we should do fun class activities that will allow us to hear different music. Trips to musicals is a great idea. If people are introduced to something new, maybe they'll realize they like it.

Yes, even though people might not be open to new styles of music like many people have said, its still important to expose them to new music. People need to get out of their comfort zone and experience new things. Exposing people to new genres of music is very important, and if they don’t like it at the end , then fine! It doesn’t matter but at least you know that you tried to make a difference. Miguel said a few days ago, “ How will they find a way to stop listening to one genre of music? ... But what about those students who don’t participate in the lesson nor listen to it? So…… what I’m trying to say that however you try to expose a new genre of music to students, not all the students will bother.” Students who don’t bother to widen their musical taste, can have fun listening to the same thing all the time. I’m interested in people who want to learn new types of music, such as myself. I’m not trying to force every one to listen to samba, or classical music, but I believe being exposed to that type of music and taking it seriously is very important.

Mr. Lawson
You have all made great suggestion but I’d like to support a point Ivon raised in her Blog. We must be willing to try something new. By trying something new means learning to appreciate. You are not being forced to change what you like but be open to new experiences. We are living in a world that’s changing and we should develop our taste. Exposing yourself to different genres of music is good. Who likes to eat chicken everyday at a meal? When individuals open themselves to new ideas and things they have begun to extend their experience and knowledge.

I agree with Chelsea. Some people grew up with certain types of music. Like me, who grew up with gospel music and also likes instrumental, it's wierd listening to music I'm not used to. That doesn't mean that I'm not open to new things; it just means that some genres of music are not for me. There's nothing wrong with hearing something new, but what will you do if they don't like what they hear? You can't penalize them for what they feel.

I agree with you Mr. Lawson, but there is some people out there who would not want to experience new things no matter how much one tries to get them to participate in these new genres. And no I won't want to eat chicken at dinner every night, but as for me I hate to try new things. I think if I am accustomed to one thing I want it to remain that way. People listen to certain types of music because it relates to then in both positive and negative way and I don't think it's right to change peoples thoughts by trying to pressure them into listening to different genres!
Yes, we do live in a changing world but I don't think people shold change as the time goes by...!

I agree with Ashisha. Just because the world is changing doesn't mean that we have to change with it. We are our own person; we don't belong to the world. There's nothing wrong with being the way you are. And if people don't want to convert to something different, then they shouldn't have to do so. Yes there are many other genres out there in the world, but we don't have to experience every single one of them. Also, not wanting to try something new doesn't mean that we don't appreciate it. It just means that we like what we are accustomed to and that we are not comfortable with change. Nobody wants to do or hear something that they don't like, so there's nothing we can do about it.

I disagree with Ashisha. I think that listening to one genre of music is overrated. Limiting ourselves is not always the best thing to do. I myself enjoy listening to new types of music. It's like every genre has a differnt feeling, and flavor. Listening to the same type of music/genre everyday can get really boring at times. So its good to explore the different types of genre out in the world. No one should limit themselves from being different. It doesn't matter what other people may think, but what you think as an individual.

♥♥I absoulutly agree with Lourie =]. I belive that its important for students to listen to all types of music. Well, not every type, but a majority is good enough. I think different types of music aliows students to aknowlage thoughts and feelings of people worldwide. Thus, music might actually change your perspective of another's way of life. People listen to music not only for entertainment, and knowlage, but to also releave stress and unwanted thoughts. For instance: not having such a good day, or as a teen (you will have a "bad relationship expierience"), when you listen to music it kind of puts your mind to ease. 'Music is my life', a very popular quote. I belive in this 100%. No matter what type of music your interested in, it should be a very important aspect of your life!!! I LOVE MUSIC.♥♥

Like many have pointed out, people listen to certain types of music based on their culture and how they grew up. Some people don’t like trying new things because it’s easier to stick to what you already know. I believe that if you, Mr. Lawson, want to expose your students to new genres of music then you should be creative. Creativity will make it more fun and won’t feel forced. I, personally, never thought about listening to something I don’t usually listen to but this is a good opportunity to do it now. At the end of the day, students including myself, might surprise ourselves and realize different genres of music are cool too.

I agree with Nikia. People are just comfortable with music they usually listen to, when you are comfortable with one or certain types of music, it is easier to stick with it. But, when you start learning different types of music it could be difficult to comprehend it. You may have trouble catching up to the beat or the rhythm of the music, or maybe have trouble with the language, but, I consider the idea of learning new ways of music, I believe it may help us understand other types of cultures or religions. It would help us understand each other.

I agree with a lot of the people who have written in this blog. Listening to more than one genre can be a very good thing. You may, or may not, enjoy the new kinds of music you hear but in the end you will be more open-minded to other new things. I personally do not agree with Ashisha. No one is trying to pressure anyone into listen to different genres, we are just simply suggesting that they broaden their horizon by listening to more than what they are used to listening. A lot of people don’t like change but no one has to change anything they are just trying something new. And its always good to listen to something new because in the long run it just helps that person out. But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Like I said before, I think that people will listen to one type of music because sometimes they feel like they can relate to it and or because it’s from their culture. I personally hate trying new things but sometimes I do try them because it’s good to try new things and try to change your self once in a while. I mostly listen to Hindi songs and Sinhalese songs and I love it because I really understand it more than English and I can relate to things that they are saying. So instead of listening to a lot of English songs I just stick to one thing and listen to Hindi and Sinhalese songs. I grew up listening to Hindi and Sinhalese songs and I keep it as a part of me no matter where I am.

As i've mentioned before, it is important to listen to a variety of music. However, you have every right to be different from every one else. Its perfectly fine to be interested in a few, or possibly one type of music. As much as "exploring through music" is important; ITS NOT manditory... and it shouldn't be. I personally believe music is one of the few things in life that are freely available to any one. The type of music they choose to listen to should not be a judgemental situation!!!!! =]
