Challenges and Surprises
- It's exciting & bewildering time for the new puppy as id adjusts to leaving its litter-mates & living with you as its new owners.
- Be prepared for other surprised as the puppy becomes facinated by its surroundings. The puppy's powerful sense of smell and natural tendency to track rapidly moving objects cause it to home in on your flapping shoe laces. These challenging targets may need to be properly ambushed and pounced upon.Sudden loud noises are not so pleasant for the new puppy who may be terrified by a door banging shut or the disembodied sream of a whisling kettle.
- Some people sat that you must immediately put your puppy in exactly the conditions you wish it to continue living. It certainly is a good idea to have a plan & sort out how you wish to keep your dog, but it's also important to be adaptable for the first few nights.
- Your new puppy will fell lonely at first & will fell more secure if you imitate its previous conditions of sleeping with its mother or litter mates. This can be achieved by securely wrapping a hot water bottle in an antricle of old clothing that contains your scent.Your puppy can then snuggle up in its bed with a good chance of resting contentedly during the night.
- If the puppu is very distressed,it may be wise to allow it to be with you for the first few nights.Having little or no sleep can make you feel very hostile towards your puppy.Plan to quickly get your puppy sleeping alone if that is your ultimate aim.If the puppy is sleeping with you, set your alarm clock & remember to take puppy outside or to a litter tray so it can relieve itself.
- It is also wise to have a quick check around before bringing the puppy hoem & spend a litte time following it around to ensure its safety.Remove anything that is dangerous or cherished & put it out of the puppies reach. Some people choose to use a puppy play pen.Although it looks as though the puppy is in jail, they do safeguard your puppy & are ideal when you're occupied with other tasks.
Food Bowls & Collars
- It is worth-while investment to provide stainless stell or ceramic bowls for food & water.Whatever the material, the bowls must be durable enough to resist your puppies attempts at chewing them & stable enough to remain upright & in one place.Deep bowls should be provided for dogs with long muzzles, & shallow bowls for those with short muzzles. The correct shaped bowl allows long-eared dogs to keep themselves clean. It's good practice to remove the food bowl after the dog has eaten.Leaving food out can attract vermin & flies. However, there should always be an ample suppy of clean freshwater.
- It is sensible to fit your puppy with a collar. The collar allows you to manage the puppy around the house & garden, and is a great help when you need to catch the puppy if it is about to do something dangerous or undersirable. An inexpensive, leather dog collar is generally a good choice but the puppy will not be too distressed if you have to provide it with a cat collar intially.
Socializing
- It is extremely important that your puppy is fully socialized with other dogs and peoples.Although there is always a risk that a puppy that is not fully protected may contact the highly contangious disease of Parvo virus, there is a far greater likehood that the badly socialized dog will be euthanased because of anti-social and aggressive behaviour.
- The largest killer of dogs is them being euthanased because of their bad behaviour. The risk of your new puppy catching a disease can be greatly reduced by allowing it to socialize with dogs that you know are disease-free,and avoiding public places, which may have infection.
- Keeping a puppy away from other dogs during the first 12 weeks can seriously impair its behaviour. It is also very important to allow your puppy to meet different people. The socializing with other dogs and people allows the puppy to realize that others are mainly friendly, they are not to be fered of.Scared dogs rapidly become aggressive dogs.
- Socialization allows the puppy to recognize body language of other dogs and understand the signficance of speech in people. Many behaviourists and veterinarians now run socialization classes for puppies .The puppies have marvelous fun together and their owners are taught a great deal about dog behavior and other related matters.
- The puppy should also be seposed to a wide range of different situations, such as being walked on a lead along a busy road. This action gets the puppy used to traffic sounds and your restraint teaches them not to chase after the vehicles as they rush past. When you have a puppy, becuase it is very young or small, you should avoid the temptation of picking it up every time it meets another dog.Instead you should allow your puppy the chance to show that it is young & submissive so that other dogs won't harm it.Regularly picking up a small young dog can either encourage it to be very timid, or if it is allowed to bark & snarl at other dog,it can develop an inflated value of its aggressive capablities.Later it may show inappropiate aggression to larger dogs & not back down when it should.
House Training
- Before you train your puppy not to urinate or defecate inside the house, you must first understand its instinctive behaviour.Using the puppy's instinc as a base, you must appeal to its ablity to learn new behaviour.Dogs are very reluctant to eliminate exactly where they sleep.Given the opportunity they will always choose to move away from their sleeping area to urinate & defecate.Often they will choose a surface that is defferent from their sleeping are and/or that is different from the rest of the common flooring.Outside, puppies often prefer a grassy area to eliminated on,in preference to bare paving.
- You should be aware that the puppy will also appreciate eliminating on a rug or carpet in preference to a tiled floor. This is why you should provide an indoors puppy with newspaper,as it will usally eliminate on the newspaper in prefence to the rest of the floor. When you see the puppy eliminating anywhere else you have to pick it up & carry it to the newspaper, wait until it eliminates & then praise is again.Over a period of time you can gradually move the newspaper closer & closer to the outside where you eventually want the puppy to eliminate.
- It is often quicker to always take the puppy outside to eliminate in a prescibed arrea. You must avoid the temptation of showing anger to the puppy for having eliminated at the wrong place. You must take is to where you expect it to eliminate & then praise it when is does.
- Remember puppies learn much faster than children do & this whole problem will be overcome very quickly.Your patience & determination will soon be rewarded.Of you keep the puppy indoors when you are training iy,you will be wise to reduce the overwall space that the puppy has access to.You must be aware of what your puppy is oing whenever is may be possible for it to be eliminating in the wrong place.
Vaccinating
- It is vitally important that your puppy be vaccinated aganist the common diseases. In the USA and Europe, vaccination aganist rabies is required by law.The puppy is generally vaccinated at 9 weeks and then a booster annually.
- Canine Parvo virus and Canine Distemper both affect the dog's gut and are responsible for the death of many young dogs.Cannie Parvo virus usally begins with persistent vomiting followed by severe depression and chronic bloody diarrhea.Death usally occurs within 24 hours.Intensive care in hospital may save the puppy's life.Canine Distemper has similar symptoms but there is usally also a discharge from the eyes and nose,as well as convulsions.Death or permanent brain damage may result.
- Other common diseases which are endanger to your puppy include Canine hepatits which results in liver damage and death,or if the puppy is only mildly affected it will have a loss of appetite,be lethargic and take a long time to recover.Cannie Kennel Cough is common where many dogs are kept together in a kennel, and the puppies have a severe cough for a couple of weeks.Fortunately this highly contagious disease is generally controllable with antibiotics.Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease affecting the liver and kidneys.
- In most cases, the caccination will safeguard your puppy aganist the common diseases.Registered breeders should have begun a caurse of vaccinations which your veterinarian will complete at 12 to 16 weeks ols. Most veterinarians recommend annual boosters to retain the dog's immunity towards the common diseases.Within the first week you acaquire a puppy,it is essential that your puppy to the veterinarian for vaccination.
